Greatest Finisher Ever in terms of importance?
In your opinion what would be the greatest finisher ever in the history of wrestling in terms of importance?
It wouldn't be completely based on how it looks such as Mike Awesome's Awesome Bomb looks better than Hogan's Leg Drop but the leg drop ended up being more important or influential in wrestling history. Also it doesn't have to be limited to only 1 wrestler such as the Ace Crusher branching into the Diamond Cutter and RKO as finishers. As well as only counting when done as a finisher and not as a regular move like the DDT being a finisher with Jake Roberts but now seen as just a normal move. |
I'll go out on a bit of a limb here and say the body slam. Can't think of any guys who used it as a regular finisher, but think about how many times it was such a big deal when a giant like Kamala, Andre or Big Show were body slammed. There were matches specifically centered around the move, too, like Studd vs Andre.
It's an important move in history, too. You never hear about how Hogan leg dropped Andre, even though the leg drop was the last move preformed in the Mania 3 match. It's always about how Hogan body slammed Andre. |

Stunner, by far, followed by the figure four leg lock.

Gotta say stunner in terms of importance and a close second would be the legdrop (Which is bar none the worst finishing move in wrestling history. Yes even the Cobra out performs it, but it's still 'Iconic'.). I'd like to also throw the Tombstone Piledriver in there and the Chokeslam as both have also made great contributions.

I wanna toss in Sweet Chin Music. The way it was used at Mania 24 to "end" Flair's career... come on now... that is special.

Hogan's leg drop is by far the most important finisher in wrestling. It lead to the formation of the nWo, which lead to the formation of the Monday Night Wars, which to this point is the most popular time in wrestling's history. Also, it was the move that defined the era's before it as well.
The lack of love for Hogan on this forum is unbelievable! He WAS wrestling in the 80's and is the reason it was popular back then. Also, he was the centre of another wrestling boom in the 90's. You all should really show this man appreciation for what he has done for the business he literally put on the map. |
The DDT by a mile. Part of so many movesets, great high-impact move, quick, etc. Easy choice for me.

I love powerbombs, ddts nd piledrivers. Unfortunately now everybody kicks out.

The Stone Cold Stunner.
No other finishing move has defined an era as much as The Stunner. |
Just throwing this out there. Would Jerry Lawlers piledrivers to Andy Koffman count in terms of importants? Did that make pro wrestling main stream?
|
Maybe the slap at David Letterman's show did...not sure about the Piledriver.

Had a feeling it would end up as a toss up between the Stunner and Leg Drop for moves named the most when creating the thread.

Interesting question. I think the obvious answer for a wrestling fan is the Stone Cold Stunner and its variants: Orton's RKO, DDP's Diamond Cutter, etc.
In terms of "excitement", I would say the People's Elbow Drop. It hearkens back to Hulk Hogan's "hulking up" for the Leg Drop and has spawned other things like the 5 Knuckle Shuffle, Kofi's little gay dance leg drop thing, and perhaps even the 619 set up. Now, in terms of public knowledge, I think the greatest finisher of all time might be Ricky Steamboat's top rope flying splash. Everybody recognizes this move, and its spawned other variations from RVD's 5 Star to Eddie's Frog Splash - perhaps even the more exciting variants like the 450 Splash. It's also created many iconic moments, such as Ricky diving off the top of the steel cage. |
