Why was "Rock, This is Your Life" ratings soo high?

Of course, Russo belives it's all because of him. Obviously, they tried to recreate some of that with the whole John Cena segment last week. Why do you think "Rock, this is your life" is one of the highest rated segments in RAW history?

RiX1024 11-18-2011 07:30 PM

Mainly because it's a challenge.

Skippord 11-18-2011 07:33 PM

I think the better question is why does Vince Russo look like Saddam Hussein?

Anybody Thrilla 11-18-2011 07:42 PM

I dunno. I didn't even think it was that funny.

Xero 11-18-2011 07:55 PM

It was because those two were at their peak as was the business. And it was just such a ridiculous segment that people wound up tuning in, whether by channel surfing or word of mouth. I'm pretty sure that segment was extra long, too, like 20 minutes to a half hour, so it gave people plenty of time to tune in.

The biggest thing, though, is that the business was at its peak. It was bound to hit its highest mark. I'd like to know the rating for the rest of the show, really. Not just overall, but the quarter hours. Like if it was just a .3 jump for the segment (say 8.1-8.4) that's not THAT huge and it was just a coincidence that they happened to hit it on that segment. But if it's like a point or more then there's more to it than I'm thinking.

Xero 11-18-2011 08:00 PM

Just looked it up, it's a 24 minute segment, so that also did have something to do with it.

Here it is, in its entirety.

Seriously, with the way people would watch anything with Foley and the Rock in it, and the way the business was on fire, it could have been "Rock, this is the toilet" and consisted of the two of them in the can, and it would have scored in the ratings.

Emperor Smeat 11-18-2011 11:35 PM

Besides both the Rock and Mankind people very popular during that time, it could also be related to how bad WCW was doing at the time considering it occurred during WWF's dominance over WCW.

A ton of people did switch over once it was learned Foley was winning the title earlier in the year so it could make sense more people had switched over and followed just the WWF by the time the "This is Your Life" occurred.

St. Jimmy 11-19-2011 02:42 AM

No idea, the entire segment was a clusterfuck and a train-wreck at the same time.

ZosoMetalManiac 11-19-2011 04:35 AM

I remember watching it, and I thought it was hilarious. The best part was how The Rock reacted to these people Foley brought out. Maybe I'll watch it again and see if I feel the same all these years later.

Juan 11-19-2011 04:42 AM

If someone can figure out what segment WCW ran against this, it might explain why it was watched so much.

David Flair cuts a half hour long promo on David Arquette challenging him to a world title match?

Sixx 11-19-2011 04:51 AM

Well, David Flair was involved in the main event, so I wasn't that far off.

El Fangel 11-19-2011 05:06 AM

just watched it in its entirety. I agree, its rather bad.

Juan 11-19-2011 05:07 AM

I'm shocked something from the Attitude era is being called "bad"

Never thought I'd see the day

El Fangel 11-19-2011 05:20 AM

Just seems like a corny 10 min segment stretched to it's limits.

I didn't find it funny, though it shows no matter how bad the segment, The Rock could get the crowd going.

FourFifty 11-19-2011 12:29 PM

That still of Russo looks like a cave man...

Xero 11-19-2011 12:32 PM

Me Russo. Me write wrestling.

Ol Dirty Dastard 11-19-2011 12:52 PM

the attitude era was rough to watch at certain points especially when it was a russo influenced segment, but the characters were so damned strong at that point it didn't much matter.

I didn't think anyone sane had ever pretended the Attitude Era didn't have some serious shit in it. This was an Era where X-Pac could get a pop FFS.

They ran an angle of Sting repeatingly attacking Hulk hogan with a baseball bat to the knee, and the whole "Rebirth of the Total Package" segment too. I may be wrong but Nitro may have still pulled around a 4 that night so :-\

I keep forgetting what Lex Luger's real name was, but I know it kinda reminded me of Mark Knopfler, so I'll just call him Mark Knopfler.

No, no point in this post.

Sixx 11-19-2011 02:33 PM

Other than that I'm just watching The Rebirth of the Total Package, which I don't remember, in spite of watching Monday Nitro every week around then.

Hey, we only sometimes got RAW and when we did, it was in German.

Sixx 11-19-2011 02:41 PM

Lex must have been a huge dick, if only Liz came to his funeral.

Not even a priest.

Larry Pfohl, fucking silent P....

KaosDarksol 11-19-2011 06:13 PM

It was because everyone loves the rock

That totally sounds like Mark Knopfler.

I was right.

Wake Up Call 11-19-2011 06:52 PM

Segment was awesome, and it just shows that The Rock makes John Cena look like a bitch in pretty much every aspect of the game.

I LOVE reading how some of you think the Attitude Era sucked. It's what made the industry as popular as it s today! It will NEVER be as popular, and when people talk about wrestling memories, most if not all the memories they can remember are from that Era.

Vince Russo had as big a hand in the success of the business back then than anyone. I don't like what he does not a days either, but he should be given respect for what he accomplished back in the day.

Party Hardy 11-19-2011 07:11 PM

This is your life was great because it was a party. Not a Matt Hardy Party but pretty close.

Ol Dirty Dastard 11-19-2011 07:13 PM

If you look at some of the storylines during the attitude era, especially in 1999, it was awful. BUT the characters were strong. It was 1998 that brought the best writing in the attitude era, and the very end of 1997. It mostly had to do with the wrestlers having freedom with their characters.

StRaNgEr 11-20-2011 05:25 AM

Well, im not an expert on the neilson ratings system, but to answer the question presented in this post, I am going to say that it had a very high rating, because a lot of people watched it, could be wrong tho.....

Aguakate 11-20-2011 05:42 AM

Why was "Rock, This is Your Life" ratings soo high?

Because wrestling as a whole was at an all-time high.

And, people loved The Rock and Mick Foley.
