Robocop, Super Mario Brothers immediately spring to mind for me.

What about Star Wars?

JimmyMess 12-13-2011 09:38 PM

Star Wars would have been a blockbuster, but I doubt it would be held in the same regard as it currently is, since it was groundbreaking at the time.

Howabout ...

The Neverending Story
Tron.

Juan 12-13-2011 09:48 PM

Super Mario Bros would need more than today's technology to make it a blockbuster.

Better story is the first thing that comes to mind.

VSG 12-13-2011 10:44 PM

I would love to see LOTR in 3D just like The Hobbit is being made right now. I know it is not that old but still..

El Fangel 12-13-2011 10:49 PM

The Neverending Story...That was awesome. Updated though lol.

I've found story is essential to the "blockbuster" formula. I mean, there's no way Super Mario Brothers could ever compare to the Shakespearean plot of Transformers ROFLMAO, Batman and Robin, or Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Rammsteinmad 12-14-2011 07:50 PM

I liked the FF movies. :(

Next Big Thing 12-14-2011 10:23 PM

Ghostbusters II. Vigo the Carpathian would have been that much more badass.

Emperor Smeat 12-14-2011 11:05 PM

Was the original Tron a blockbuster when it came out?

I have a feeling it wasn't but the huge difference from the CGI effects today would be a huge improvement compared to the effects used at the time. Tron Legacy looked nice and that was meant to be more of "what Tron would look like today" for visuals.

No it was considered a cult film as it was one of the first movies to use CGI back then it was seen as a way of cheating when it came to special effects so it wasn't ever nominated as a result.

RoboCop grossed 54 million in 1987 and was the 16th most successful film of the year. It won an Academy award for sound effects editing and was nominated for Best Editing and Best Sound. I'd call that a blockbuster for its time.

To answer the question though, "Rocketeer."

Yeah, but the slime probably would have danced to Ke$ha.

They'd ruin it by using CG to make dwarves out of normal actors and spend half the movie showing landscape in New Zealand.

For some reason, people look at Robocop as a "cult" film. Not quite sure why. It might look slicker with modern tech, but it was a big fucking deal at the time.

But it was proposed by the same guy who proposed Star Wars, one of the ur examples of the blockbuster might have been a blockbuster if it had access to today's technology. I'm not sure what you expect from Fan Gerl, but I'm pretty sure it's too high. I'm surprised he didn't list T2.

The Rocketeer was criminally underrated and while it could have been better, it was one of the more faithful adaptations of the era, and really should have been bigger. I could see it being turned into a blockbuster. Though, at the same time, I worry the charm and spirit of the movie would be utterly fucking ruined.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-16-2011 07:18 AM

The Wizard of Oz/Gone with the Wind. Though the CGI and all that stuff would probably ruin it. Movies were better when people actually had to do something other than click on a computer to make special effects.

I'd love to see a more faithful Oz.

I'm not bashing the Judy Garland movie, which is fine for what it is, but I can't help but think how cool it'd be to see a series of movies closer to the actual Wizard of Oz series (Or Land of Oz, or whatever you want to call Baum's Oz books).

But I seriously hope they don't try and blockbuster that shit. I've seen what happens when they try and take fairy tales and blockbuster 'em up, and Oz would be much to the same effect.

El Fangel 12-16-2011 09:46 PM

Frankenstein I think would be cool.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-16-2011 11:23 PM

Wouldn't Van Helsign count for that one? It was a major part of the movie.

Well, Van Helsing was certainly a Blockbuster, but I'm not sure it's really what one would envision as "a modern Frankenstein movie" unless they were heavily on drugs. It's more like one of those cheesy crossover flicks. Which is fine, but not the same as an actual remake or whatever.

I really should watch Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at some point. I thought it was a successful movie, but Wikipedia lists it as a domestic flop.

Since we're already listing films (Star Wars, Robocop) that were blockbusters and shit, I just thought I'd mention Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A giant fucking success, so I'm not saying it needed to be Blockbustered, but I'd like to see what they could do with it given modern animation/live filming techniques.

I doubt it'd be revolutionary, but it'd be cool.

Tommy Gunn 12-17-2011 07:02 PM

I was going to say The Terminator (1984) would be ruined with CGI instead of practical effects, but then I remembered James Cameron is one of the rare film makers who knows the fuck how to use CGI without Phantom Menacing it.

Fox 12-18-2011 01:56 PM

I think the way they did the Terminator was pretty cool. Not because it's the best technology (Well, today's standards), but because it actually made the Terminator look more inhuman.

I mean, it's not the reason it exists, but it's kind of the reason I don't want it changed. Sometimes, limitations work out for the best. Sleek and fluid T-800s are far less creepy.

Though the T-1000 works as CGI because it works on a different level. Kinda the same way the casting went in a different direction.

I think I heard something about somebody remaking The Wizard of Oz more "faithfully".

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-22-2011 05:45 AM

Faithful to the original running script. not, far as I know, to the books themselves.

The cynic in me wants to believe some jerk-off Hollywood producer took over an account here on TPWW and made this thread to fish for potential remakes.

Hey, Fan Gerl may be a jerkoff, but he's not dumb enough to be a Hollywood producer!

I'd love to see Starfighter remade. I'm not sure the name would carry any weight, but I'd fucing love it.
