CM Punk's Name

How come he got to keep his name when he signed with the WWE?

Why did they not rename him Phillip McGuillicutty or something?

Funky Fly 02-04-2012 09:09 PM

That started with NXT. Well, it actually started with Dolph Ziggler, but yeah the crazy names started with that show. Dunno which season, but yeah.

Triple Naitch 02-04-2012 09:41 PM

Think I heard he agreed to sign over all of his licensing rights in order to use the name.

Lock Jaw 02-04-2012 10:35 PM

I'm pretty sure the renaming thing began before NXT, didn't it?

So, does this mean WWE owns the name? If Punk left and went somewhere else, would he now have to use a different name?

blak23 02-04-2012 11:30 PM

Yeah, wrong.

Wishbone 02-05-2012 01:04 AM

My guess is that 1)the name was pretty good and marketable and 2)WWE officials at the time probably didn't think he'd ever amount to anything more than a midcarder

The CM really did mean Chick Magnet originally. He said so in an interview on our local radio show.

If you go to that link, click on More in the podcast section and go to interviews. It's on there.

I'm pretty sure Heyman booking him in OVW and then bringing him to ECW probably had some influence in it too. Probably went to bat for him.

Punk gives a different explination for the CM everytime he has asked. anyhow punk sold the name to the wwe.

Destor 02-07-2012 02:05 AM

basically this means the can continue using his name after he leaves but RVD sold them his name as well and is using still so i would wager he would still be able to use CM Punk...legal stuff is tricky tho so who knows.

WWE has the trademark and CM Punk was a willing participant.

It depends on their agreement. Since that isn't explicitly stated in public, we can only guess. However, WWE does own the name.
