The Pontiac Silverdome
It's still offically the place where they had their biggest audience ever - 93,173, at WrestleMania III.
http://www.silverdome.com/wwf.JPG Do you think they can ever pull it off again? |
No way!
They'll never do Wrestlemania III ever again! As for the audience figures.....not just now. Maybe if they can get a fanbase like they did a few years ago, then maybe..... |
Here's a better question... what matches would need to be booked in order to have that size audience? And isn't it funny how things change. WrestleMania was Andre/Hogan, and got 93,000. I bet today that match wouldn't draw so much.
|
Taking the 'what matches would they need to book' question:
In no particular order: Stone Cold Steve Austin v Goldberg TLC 5: The Dudleys v The Hardy's v Edge & Christian v RVD & Shane McMahon Randy Orton v John Cena The Rock v Brock Triple threat match: Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero Hell In A Cell: Mick Foley v HHH Cruiserweight Elimination Chamber match: Jamie Noble, Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman, Ultimo Dragon, Chavo Guerrero, Dean Malenko Undertaker and Kane v The Big Show and Vince McMahon Ladder Match: Chris Jericho v HBK |
Two matches with ladders, two more with cages? The matches themselves would make the card huge, sure, but you'd need a bit more variety with the stips.
And I could point out the old 78,000 deal, but damn, that arena is ****ing packed, so I shan't bother, someone else can for me. |

Admittedly, I'm definitely lacking imagination today, although I am intrigued to see what 6 Cruiserweights could do with the elimination chamber.... |
I think they could fill it, Its Wrestlemania.
|
People are just gonna buy tickets
|
Forgive me for going OT, but I've had the same rep for the past month and a half - I'll "become famous soon enough." How soon is soon enough? Now, back to the topic, were there reports it wasn't really 93,000?
|
You gotta hit over 1000 rep points to change it

Alright, I'm going to do a little mathematics here to hopefully end this issue.
Now, we have to take into account that there are only 3 primary seating areas inside the Silverdome. In the picture that was provided so graciously by Red Hot Scott,(who bagged it from www.silverdome.com) we can take the floor seats out of the equation for now. On the Silverdome's website, they list the number of seats per section as follows: (I am not going to count the luxury or club boxes, as I am not sure if they were used during WWF WrestleMania III (I do not pollute the timeline like the World Wildlife Fund would want me to do, and I hope that no-one else here will, either.)) Lower Level (the level just before the floor seats)-42,082 Club Level (the level just above the Lower Level)-7,342 Now, we add the Lower Level and Club Level figures up first, and we get 49,424 fans SO FAR. We now take that number, and add that to this amount: Upper Level (the level at the very top)- 29,399 So, 49,424 + 29,399 = 78,823 78,823 WWF-E Fans occupied the permanent Silverdome seats. To figure out our floor seat attendance, we take the 93,173 number and Subtract that from 78,823. So: 93,173 - 78,823 = 14,350 14,350 sat on the floor of the Silverdome during WMIII. So if you add it all up, the final figure will, indeed, be 93,173 who attended WM III in 1987. There. It is settled. *im a genius! :D * |
I was thinking about Wrestlemania III the other day and why they havn't used the Pontiac Silverdome for another Wrestlemania. I think enough people will be willing to attend. The card would have to be off the charts though or else the WWE will have a hard time selling tickets
|
If they ever did put Wrestlemania at the 'Dome, it'd look mighty weird if they didn't have a sellout crowd like Wrestlemania III in pictures.
I'd agree with most of those matches, but Undertaker and Kane v The Big Show and Vince McMahon?? Maybe Taker and Kane in another Inferno match? I don't know, but that surely wouldn't draw. |
WRESTLEMANIA 3 DID NOT HOLD 93,000!!!!
I've done the research and the Silverdome people say it was 78,000. The promoter who I emailed insisted it was 78,000 and there were more people in that building for the Pope months before and it was not 93,000. The only people who insist it's 93,000 are the WWF/E. If anyone is going to lie for their own benefit, it would be the promoter and he said 78,000. Do all the fancy math you like but it was 78,000. |
Its like when the WWE used to claim they had 22,000 people in MSG, when MSG cant even hold 20,000 people. WWE uses fuzzy math.
They could have equaled Wrestlemania III in 2001 if they wanted to, but I dont think Vince ever wants to top that '87 number. |

lol...I was just being a dick
|
So what kinds of matches would they need in order to fill this size arena?
"Fantasy bookers," where are you??? |
well with the current state now there is no way that that feat could be matched again.

The only way Vince and co. could ever get a big number like that, is turning WrestleMania into a one-day festival event, with a concert, matches in the afternoon and night, a stacked card, perhaps bringing some old WCW matches (War Games, The Triple Cage).

Two words: free booze.

Although the number still seems high, they may have included wrestlers, refs, ushers, ticketrippers, security and all the backstage staff as part of the attendance.

I was thinking that too. Still wouldn't account for near the 14,000 or so that are not accounted for. |
As for the card they would have to have...
Bret Hart Vs. Kurt Angle (60 Minute Iron Man Match) Hulk Hogan Vs. The Rock (I Quit Match) Stone Cold Vs. Goldberg (Street Fight) Mick Foley Vs. HHH Vs. HBK (Hell In A Cell) Chris Benoit Vs. Eddie Guererro (World Titles Unification Match) Chris Jericho & RVD Vs. Matt & Jeff Hardy Vs. Dudleyz Vs. Christian & Lance Storm (TLC Tag Titles Unification Match) Tajiri Vs. Ultimo Dragon. Vs. Kidman Vs. Chavo Guererro Vs. Funaki Vs. Aiko(Cruiserweight title, all in ring at the same time) Kane Vs. The Undertaker (Inferno Match) John Cena & Edge Vs. Randy Orton & Booker T |

I totally agree with CyNick though. They could have easily beaten the mythical 93,000 mark with a legit number if Mania 17, 18 or 19 were in bigger buildings. |
