What was the most frustrating game you ever played?

When I was a kid I got Disney's Tail Spin for one Christmas on the NES. The first boss defeated me every single time I played. A big baseball monster.

Literally never played it again because of that.

Havent played Zool in forever, remember it being hard as fuck though

El Fangel 02-07-2012 09:27 AM

Contra, XMen and Ninja Gaiden were the most antagonising.

I threw Ninja Gaiden: Black out my bedroom window about 2 hours in.

Ermaximus 02-07-2012 11:49 AM

Ninja Gaiden 2

SuperSlim 02-07-2012 12:08 PM

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES. The first one, not the arcade version. That one was too tough.

Captain of Fun 02-07-2012 12:19 PM

Yeah, the water level in the first TMNT was not fun in the least. Think I beat it once.

I had Ninja Gaiden II as a kid, and I dunno. It was definitely really hard, but it never frustrated me, because it was also fair. There is no obstacle at that game that can't be overcome by simply being better at the game.

Stuff that frustrates me are things that are just clearly broken, that the devs didn't give a shit enough to fix.

Or what's worse, purposely didn't fix it for the purpose of some assinine tradition. *cough* SNK Bosses *cough*

El Fangel 02-07-2012 12:22 PM

Oh christ, Battletoads.

Captain of Fun 02-07-2012 12:25 PM

Platforming in Double Dragon II

Shaved Monkey 02-07-2012 12:41 PM

Punch Out.

I've been playing that game at least once or twice a week for the last 20 years and I still can't beat Tyson.

Also, add Blaster Master and Bionic Commando to the list too.

Xero 02-07-2012 12:46 PM

The NES Barbie game. I couldn't get past the first jump. :$

It was frustrating at points, but that wasn't the worst part.

By the water level, they'd sucked any fun out of it. I beat the game, but more out of a desire to do it to spite the game than actual enjoyments.

Especially if you dared play it two player.

The first thing that came to mind was:

I don't think I got more than one "crime" solved. Ever.

Shoulda cheated. I think there were Game Genie codes?

Going for months

XCaliber 02-07-2012 03:09 PM

Back to the Future it was hard but it didn't help that is was so broken too.

Testicle 02-07-2012 05:45 PM

Battletoads

Dark-Slicer Diago 02-07-2012 08:32 PM

Battletoads for sure, TMNT 1 on nes I've never beaten nor will ever attempt to play again. Another game that got frustrating was a Japanese game called Boxpusher for dos, the boxes would get smaller and smaller every level, at least after every 10 levels their was a 10s break in the form of a Japanese female model(though yes the game could be paused and lvls tracked via either auto-save or password, I forgot which as it's been YEARS). I was about 4 or 5 when I first played each of those.

Emperor Smeat 02-07-2012 08:45 PM

Ninja Gaiden II and the Contra series in general without using the Konami code.

Got really frustrated with the timing puzzles in God of War 1 to the point where I just wanted to beat the game to end it and not because I felt good.

For legitimately bad game, probably Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Super Man 64.

SuperSlim 02-07-2012 09:54 PM

The water stage sucked... but I always had problems with the Turtle van stage. Never beat it.

Me and my dad played the shit out of that game. Good memories, shitty game. Don't know how we beat it.

Xero 02-08-2012 10:01 AM

Swiss Ultimate 02-08-2012 10:40 AM

What sucked was how fun Battletoads was and how impossible the bike level was.

Cool King 02-08-2012 11:36 AM

I must be in the minority when it comes to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES.

I loved that game as a kid, and I didn't find the water dam level has hard as a lot of people make it out to be. It was challenging, but the fun kind of challenging. I never got frustrated at the level or the game as a whole. The way people talk about the water dam level, they talk about it like it's the hardest level ever created in the history of video games. :-\

G 02-08-2012 11:47 AM

Yeah, the Dam never gave me much trouble either. The farthest I ever got on my own was the Technodrome, because I couldn't figure out how to hurt it. I didn't have much life left so I couldn't really experiment.

Swiss Ultimate 02-08-2012 12:05 PM

You just hit the technodrome until it dies I think. Fuck Raphael.

LuigiD 02-08-2012 12:06 PM

Ninja Gaiden was a fucking beast. The first 3 ones.

Personally, I don't think it's the hardest anything. It's just tedious and fun-sucking.

Bam.

The game was awesome so you kept coming back only to fail again.

Cowabunga!

Raphael was always my favourite growing up.

Then again, not being too far from Mirage Studios, I read a lot of the original run of the non-cartoon stuff.

People think it may have warped me. I'm as stable as any other homicidal maniac....

It was sort of like how I play a demo now and if it's good I replay it a few times but get frustrated how quickly it ends.

Gonzo 02-08-2012 08:49 PM

I had Battletoads for NES but was real young so I don't remember much. I had Battletoads meet Double Dragon or something for SNES. That game was a bitch on level 3 and killing the ship after that was tough too.

I did have this one game I rented for Sega when I was like 8. It was some sort of platformer. About 10 seconds in this giant hand would come out of the ground and grab your character and kill you.

I'm sure there was some sort of visual cue that it was going to happen but I never picked up on it or something.

Corporate CockSnogger 02-08-2012 08:55 PM

Dunno. I'm pretty bad at most video games, so would get pretty frustrated when I'd play any multiplayer game with someone as I'd just get beat pretty easily. Would never be much fun when I was younger and somebody was having a bunch of people over to their house to play some sort of first person shooter game that they all owned, and I'd be running around shooting the ceiling or blowing myself up on it.

Swiss Ultimate 02-08-2012 09:52 PM

Felt like that playing Unreal Tournament with people who apparently mastered sniping.

Jordan 02-08-2012 11:16 PM

This thread makes me miss the good old days.

Shoulda cheated. I think there were Game Genie codes?

I had Dick Tracy as a kid...that game was brutal.

I'm not sure if there are Game Genie codes, but you get a password after you complete each case.

I did end up completing it though, eventually I figured out that if you walk or drive slowly (as in take a couple steps, stop, repeat) you can get enemies and booby traps to trigger long before they're supposed to.

Traps, like the safes falling from windows will fall ahead of you, and gangsters will just stand there, with half of their body onscreen. It's especially helpful with the gun-toting gangsters that are perched above you or behind objects.

It's an extremely tedious way to get through the game, but it works.
That aside, I was 9, and had already finished my other games at that time.

Kane Knight 02-09-2012 01:12 PM

Yeah, I used the passwords at some point.

Miotch 02-09-2012 01:25 PM

The 2nd Zelda game.

Same here, I hated that stupid van.

I also use to be frustrated to no end with Friday the 13th for NES. I to this day remember finally beating Jason, only for it to tell me I had to BEAT HIM AGAIN! I at that point said "fuck this shit" and have never played it since. Not to mention when that Grimace looking mother fucker (He was purple with a blue mask, wtf?) would catch you on the road and throw machetes at you.....son of a bitch.
