Am I the only one who listens to Black Metal here?

It seems so...I dont really see anyone else discuss BM bands here...

So, is it only me?

If not, lets discuss BM in this thread :y:

Shisen Kopf 02-12-2012 02:40 PM

Let's not.

Shaved Monkey 02-12-2012 02:47 PM

I don't mind the heavy stuff but I have no idea what would be considered black metal.

If it's all growly and they don't enunciate I'll pass.

Gertner 02-12-2012 02:50 PM

Pintint BM's all over his stuffed animals and fucks them.

Indifferent Clox 02-12-2012 04:29 PM

I love wolves in the throne room and galoch an many other black metal.

Corporate CockSnogger 02-12-2012 04:50 PM

Is black metal like that time Korn got a bunch of rappers to portray them in one of their videos?

Kris P Lettus 02-12-2012 05:05 PM

By "black metal" you mean like Body Count right??

Mooияakeя™ 02-12-2012 05:16 PM

As in Spellbound by Dimmu Borgir?

DLVH84 02-12-2012 05:44 PM

Living Colour?

The Mask 02-12-2012 06:05 PM

depends how kvlt it is.

The Destroyer 02-12-2012 06:21 PM

I listen to plenty of it, but you make me uncomfortable, so I won't be discussing it with you.

Pintint 02-12-2012 06:22 PM

Wikipedia has it defined pretty well,

Quote:

Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, raw recording, and unconventional song structure.

During the 1980s, several thrash metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost.[1] A "second wave" arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. The music of the early Norwegian black metal scene became a distinct genre.

Black metal has often been met with hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic and anti-Christian standpoint of many artists. Moreover, several of the genre's pioneers have been linked with church burnings and murder. For these reasons and others, black metal is usually seen as an underground form of music. Additionally some have been linked to neo-Nazism, however most black metal fans and most prominent black metal musicians reject Nazi ideology and oppose its influence on the black metal subculture
Usually the lyrics are either pagan/about nature/misanthropy or satanic.

Dimmu Borgir would qualify for Black Metal, but their later stuff has become more mainstream and therefore less creative...but I still like them.

Some of my favorite are Gehenna, Emperor, Immortal, Mistur, and Windir.

All the best bands in this genre, imo, are scandinavian, so it recieves little to no exposure in the US.

I like Bathory, Suidakra, Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel and others...

Cassidy 02-13-2012 01:03 AM

No way man! Amon Amarth and Woods of Ypres ftw

dronepool 02-13-2012 01:30 AM

I like some black metal, but not a whole bunch. I like 1349, Kovenant, Thorns, some Emperor, Death (they're death metal but I love them) and the black metal influenced bands like Dimmu and Cradle.

I dig some Bathory, Dissection and a few others but not enough that I'd know albums I could always listen to.

LuigiD 02-13-2012 01:50 AM

Use to be really into the scene years ago.
Not so much anymore. Most bands are just clones. Still listen to a handful of bands. Mostly the classics.

CSL 02-13-2012 02:01 AM

bits and pieces. might be the most self-righteous/up it's own arse genre in music tho, even more than the full-on indie clowns

Rammsteinmad 02-13-2012 04:51 AM

Could someone explain the differences between Death Metal and Black Metal, using examples that actually make sense.

Rammsteinmad 02-13-2012 04:52 AM

Also, Progressive Metal > Black Metal. :p

KIRA 02-13-2012 04:57 AM

Depends on your definition of black metal

we talking Darkthrone or cradle of filth

Kane Knight 02-13-2012 08:35 AM

Distorted guitars? In Metal? Why, I've never heard such a thing!

LuigiD 02-13-2012 12:52 PM

Black metal prank call

*Raises Hand*

Started enjoying black metal only a couple of years back, and i think a lot of that had to do with watching Satyricon live. The chills and the abnormal vibe i experienced when they played "Mother North" had me rooted at the spot, scared shitless, and still wanting more and more of it.

That being said, i enjoy the drony-ness and the constant pummel of true Black Metal the most, although the new wave of post-black metal bands have also made the genre highly accessible, and dare i say it, a bit catchy and trendy as well.

Bands that i dig include Satyricon, 1349, Insomnium, Agalloch, Behemoth, Dornenreich, Fen, Drudkh, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Ihsahn, Inquisition, Marduk, Mayhem, Melechesh, Nachymystium, Negura Bunget, Rotting Christ, Wolves In The Throne Room

Pintint 02-19-2012 11:11 AM

"Mushroomhead" is not Black Metal, it's "Nu-Metal", or pop metal or whatever.

Listening to a new CD I found online recently, Foudre Noure - The Dark Gods. Really cool stuff, its a sort of "space-rock black metal". Very atmospheric.

Rammsteinmad 02-19-2012 01:08 PM

What the fuck is 'Post-Black Metal'?

And surprise, it went right over Pintint's head.

Rammsteinmad 02-19-2012 01:11 PM

Just gonna add that every metal band can be placed in one of six subgenres: Traditional Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Alternative Metal.

Everything else overcomplicates the fuck out of it. As far as I'm concerned Black, 'Post-Black' and any other 'true Norweigen' nonsense etc would all go under 'Death Metal'.

Corporate CockSnogger 02-19-2012 01:54 PM

When I was in Sweden last year I popped into a "rock" music store. My God there were so many abstract genres, pretty sure 99% of them were made up.

Bunch of ridiculous nonsense like "Screamgore" and "Doomstep".

MoFo 02-19-2012 02:00 PM

Idk wut black metal is but I like this shit when it kicks in

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Wrp7yIsyDKI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I am a pretty big fan of "Screamgore" you guys

But you're not a pretentious douche, which is why you see needless complication as bad.

I disagree. There is a very big difference between Black and Death metal, Death is more distorted, and fast paced, basically, like Thrash only with growls, while Black is more melodic, slower paced, usually with a different vocal style. While Death metal has low, bass heavy growls, Black metal tends to have very "high" screams.

A more simplified analogy is to say that Death Metal is a heavier Thrash metal with distorted/growl vocals, while Black Metal is a depressive reflection of power metal.

I would say the genres are, Trash, Power, Death, Black and Doom. I see "nu- metal" as more relevant to pop music, than to any genre of metal.

CSL 02-19-2012 06:32 PM

I would say you're being a bender

I can see how the different genres could sound the same to somebody who doesn't listen to metal, or didnt listen to it for a long enough time, but to somebody who follows the genre, there are very distinct and strong differences between these basic "core" genres.

Vastardikai 02-19-2012 06:37 PM

That list is flawed on SEVERAL levels.

Fucking hate your posts. Can never tell if this is some kinda sarcastic shot at me, or legit. Tell me, and know that your answer will determine the outcome of whether or not you will get a green rep dot or a red one. :foc:

Kane Knight 02-20-2012 04:30 PM

Was playing it straight. The idea was more that the kind of people who need 9 million subgenres actually are pretentious douchebags.

Rammsteinmad 02-20-2012 04:44 PM

Cool, that's what I thought, just had to be sure. Enjoy your green dot.
