Watching others play gams online/tv?

I am just thinking, would there be enough intrerest to have a TV Show where like in a sports game, you have people play COD and commentators talk about it.

I would totally watch it. Sometimes im too tired to play myself and just search for clips online. You can replace COD with ur favorite shooter if ur a "Battlebro" or whatever (thats what I call Battlefield fans, lol).

What do u think???

Would you watch it?

The only way something like that would work on TV is if it were part of a contest. Even then it wouldn't be hugely popular and would probably be on some specialist channel.

Anyone that watches gaming competitively can usually do it ingame or online through streams like Twitch tv for fighting games.

I cant, I dont have a cubicle. I have a "work station" at the warehouse :(

Kane Knight 03-20-2012 11:53 AM

Next work station, then.

Actually, I can't help but wonder if there's a market for watching "liver" matches on TV.

A dozen guys playing TDM for vital organ transplants.

Closest would be the pro MLG events but those did badly when shown on regular tv. Not even ESPN is willing to show them on tv and instead just covers it once in a while on their video games section of the website.

Kalyx triaD 03-20-2012 02:45 PM

I don't think ESPN should entertain videogames in any way shape or form, save for shilling a game with the ESPN license.

Your best bet for coverage are streams, Iop.

Emperor Smeat 03-20-2012 03:17 PM

They've toyed with the idea of showing an event or two in the past but everything else they show on tv generates better ratings than MLG.

It used to have a bigger spot on ESPN video games subsection of their website but even that lost its status and now barely shows up in favor for more Madden coverage.

Funky Fly 03-20-2012 03:24 PM

It'll never be bigger than streams because most people either don't give a fuck about videogames or only give enough of a fuck to play them and maybe upload a sick tomahawk kill to youtube, not to have a dedicated show to wwatching others play..

Don't they still show Magic the Gathering tournaments?

Kalyx triaD 03-20-2012 04:42 PM

"Card games are legit."

Kane Knight 03-20-2012 04:42 PM

Because you have to physically play them.

El Fangel 03-20-2012 04:49 PM

I don't think watching a bunch of tryhards would be that entertaining.

Droford 03-20-2012 05:01 PM

Directv had a Gaming championship thing on one of their own channels where they showed a bunch of different games being played (probably not live though) by various teams and it was interesting to watch for a while..

It was Counterstrike/DOA4/Project Gotham 3 and/FIFA 07

SlickyTrickyDamon 03-20-2012 05:04 PM

G4 had a show like that before they merged with Tech-TV called Arena.

As much as I'd like to see a TV channel for showing video games coverage, it's not going to happen.

The trouble with showing video games being played on TV as a sport is that it's not special enough.

If you think about watching football, basketball, etc, is that you're watching people in peek physical condition doing things that you can't do (or at least can't do as well).

With something like CoD then anyone can pick up a pad at any time and start playing, without having dedicated their life to becoming better at their sport. Also there's no issue of having to organise with other players a time or location, as matchmaking takes care of that. In addition, people unfamiliar with the game (or genre, I understand fighting games incredibly well, but FPS games are just random to me) won't understand the nuances, which can be very hard to explain to someone who hasn't played it.

So you'll reach a point where the action shown by TV would only appeal to gamers who understand the game, but the vast majority of these would just be playing the game, or would just search for clips online if they really wanted to. So it doesn't work out as viable for any production company to do, the budget, if it got the go ahead, would be way too small and as such, would put people off watching as it would come across as a shoddy production trying to cash in.

So it reaches a Catch 22 situation: too few people will watch so it gets a small budget and the small budget puts people off watching.
