Was Floyd Mayweather the biggest waste

...of the WWEs money ever? I don't think vince got a positive ROI on him.

Swiss Ultimate 04-01-2012 04:44 PM

wouldn't know. Imagine it brought some attention to the WWE that it wouldn't have had otherwise.

Pintint 04-01-2012 04:52 PM

I think that would be the XFL, at least from what I've heard.

Shadrick 04-01-2012 04:52 PM

It brought AMAZING attention from the sports world. That kind of pub = priceless.

CSL 04-01-2012 05:04 PM

what, Mayweather was one of the best celebrity "investments" they've ever made

Rammsteinmad 04-01-2012 06:31 PM

I don't really follow Boxing so I had no idea who Mayweather was before the fight, but the fight itself and the build were very enjoyable, so no complaints from me.

Savio 04-01-2012 11:11 PM

I'm not saying he was bad, but was he worth 20 Million? I don't think there was any possible way he could have made WWEs money back.

James Steele 04-02-2012 02:35 AM

...he didn't really make $20,000,000.

Savio 04-02-2012 07:32 AM

oh ok

Considering it pulled in fewer viewers than the prior Wrestlemania?

MoFo 04-02-2012 08:59 AM

lol what is this

Kane Knight 04-02-2012 09:43 AM

A question? I can see why you're confused.

I think this is what people miss out on when they discuss the crossover appeal of celebrities, especially stars in other sports. Yeah Mayweather does million dollar buyrates on his own, but that doesn't mean the people who are fans of him boxing are going to put down $50 to see him in a 5 minute attraction match where the outcome is predetermined.

When WWE gets attention because of the participation of someone outside the organization, especially if it comes from the sports media, the tone is usually more "Hey, the circus is in town and [Insert Athlete Here] is going to be in one of the acts, that should be good for a laugh."

Emperor Smeat 04-02-2012 05:52 PM

Maybe in terms of money since he was rumored to get either $1 million or a few millions for the appearance but in terms of hype, it did get covered a lot in the media.

ESPN covered it a bit although they always give a small nod to wrestling when Wrestlemania arrives.

whiteyford 04-03-2012 11:57 AM

Probably the bands they bring in for 'Mania, dont see how any of them have drawn anyone and i doubt they were all cheap,Mayweather at least garnered some wider promotion in the media.

Savio 04-03-2012 01:06 PM

I originally made this thread because I thought Mayweather was paid 20,000,000$ since he was not I will retract my statement.

In terms of crossover hype, Donald Trump did as well and seemed to influence actual buys.

Crossover hype doesn't work that well for WWE these days, because it used to be they were perceived to be on somewhat level grounds.

Are we talking from just a celebrity standpoint? I can think of some horrible "investments" on well known wrestlers (indy and veterans) that had no real pay off

Savio 04-08-2012 12:24 PM

just any investment, although I would consider XFL to be a seperate entity than the WWE so I would not count that.

I'm betting the yield was still better than with most celebrities.

Kane Knight 04-08-2012 10:48 PM

I should say recently. I don't particularly know about, say, the 80s.

itsmeJD 04-09-2012 03:46 PM

How many asses did Akebono put in the seats? I'll never understand the point of that whole thing other than to make Big Show look like a doofus.

Isn't that enough?
