Music Discussion #1 - The Beatles

Stop thinking this will be like Rate the Artist/Musician. I don't intend to spam the ever loving hell out of the forums like I did last time, so chill. I saw several people state that they dislike how little goes on in here, so I am aiming to change that.

Was thinking of doing one of these every three days, sort of like the "Better Wrestler" series has done that has been doing on for over a year now. It's a working formula and one I hope will work with this.

I am going to start it off and if anyone wishes to go next just let me know and they can take over and then repeat the process. That way we get a great diversity of music up for discussion.

My suggestion would be to post a picture of the band, embed a video of one of their songs for people to listen to if they haven't already. Perhaps discuss your favorite songs and albums by the band.

Think my favorite song by them is "Strawberry Fields Forever" I always loved the melody of the song, the mood it gives just makes me happy.

"Come Together" and "Hey Jude" are two that I very much enjoy as well. Seems weird that a lot of people say that the Beatles are way overrated, I respect their opinions on it depending on other music they enjoy but how exactly you cannot like such amazing music is far beyond my understanding.

Requiem 04-15-2012 10:21 PM

Never 'got' the beatles. I like some of their songs but I just can't stand to listen to the majority of their library. Don't understand why SO MANY people think they are the best band of all time. Is it just because of the time they came out?

Similar to that argument, Hendrix. He was a great guitarist, but I can't stand a lot of his music. A lot of it just isn't pleasant to listen to.

El Fangel 04-15-2012 10:25 PM

When you look back at the music that came out around the time the Beatles came onto the scene you see a lot of bands that were beginning the rock movement which took off in the 70's and 80's.

Honestly believe the Beatles were that catalyst that helped get rock into the main stream. You look back pre-60's and you see a vast amount of country singers but rock really took off after Elvis and The Beatles.

I'm gonna be perfectly honest, guys. I heard the song "I Am The Walrus" for the first time ever yesterday in it's entirety. I've been listening to the same damn song for the past half hour. It's. So. Good.

What the hell is it about?

El Fangel 04-15-2012 11:02 PM

@RoXer, Damn. Love when people do nice covers of good songs.

El Fangel 04-15-2012 11:04 PM

Oh and not sure if it counts, but Imagine is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I am going to "try" to limit my posts in this thread. Huge Beatles fan.

Really dont see the point in limiting what you like to talk about to be honest. What's your favorite song by them?

It would be a tie between two awesome George Harrison songs,

Both are my personal favorites. There are so many good songs, it is very difficult for me to choose.

Evil Vito 04-16-2012 09:48 AM

Honestly not a big fan. I get that they were massively influential and such, and I like a few of their songs - but for the most part it's not my cup of tea. Feel like most of the Beatles fans I know get offended at the very idea of somebody not liking them.

The Destroyer 04-16-2012 09:55 AM

What Vito said, mostly. I like some of their songs but I wouldn't even remotely consider myself a fan.

whiteyford 04-16-2012 10:03 AM

Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour are the only two Beatles albums i own, like a few of their songs but couldnt name them. Ringo did the voice over for Thomas the tank engine so can't fault him ever.

Indifferent Clox 04-16-2012 10:24 AM

Hey fangel, put me on the rotation if you'd like.

I love the beatles. Favorite album is revolver. Favorite Beatle is George. And I like Eleanor rigby.

Corporate CockSnogger 04-16-2012 11:00 AM

Being from Liverpool, The Beatles were pretty much embedded into my mind, personality and culture from an early age. The city is full of amazing Beatles sights, tours, buildings, memorabilia. Just walking down roads where they used to live just feels amazing when put into perspective.

whiteyford 04-16-2012 11:23 AM

You also gave us Cilla Black though...Chuck.

Bad Company 04-16-2012 11:50 AM

I am a massive beatles fan, and my favourite album is Revolver.
I'm still not sure what my favourite song is though, they released so many. It almost changes weekly, but Here, there, and everywhere has always stuck with me as a beautiful song.

GD 04-16-2012 12:41 PM

Revolver is easily my favorite album. Followed closely by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Kapoutman 04-16-2012 03:58 PM

I love the Beatles. Favorite album is either Sgt. Pepper, Revolver or Let it Be. So many good songs on all of these.

Favorite song is definitely A Day in the Life though. I've Got A Feeling is a close second.

loopydate 04-17-2012 08:35 PM

I posted a thread years back about a book that I'd found that had a list of the 100 greatest Beatles songs of all-time. At the time, I gave serious consideration to posting my own list.

But I honestly don't know how I can whittle such an immense library of music that is - in several cases - perfect down to a measly 100.

Maybe I'll revisit that idea some day.

DAMN iNATOR 04-20-2012 03:06 PM

By far the best Rock & Roll band of all time.

A lot of why I respect The Beatles as one of the all time greats isn't their library in and of itself. It's the way they used and innovated a lot of techniques in the making of their music. Granted a good chunk of that was fucked up ideas while on hallucinogens, but it worked. Plus, their personalities really shine through in their work. They don't ever sound derivative of another band (like most bands today do) and you can tell which Beatle wrote which songs.

Actually, both Hendrix and The Beatles are pretty hit or miss when it comes to their libraries. Lots of stuff I dig and lots I don't.

It's about screwing with a bunch of kids who analyse Beatles songs.

Howabout when Adam Levine does mediocre covers of good songs?

I like Maroon 5, but that was as close to soulless as I've ever heard a song performed. Will Shatner is more animated.

Hendrix and the Beatles really didn't innovate much at all; they merely popularized it. If that's the grounds for your fandom, I don't know what to say. There's plenty right with them. Innovation just isn't one of them.

Funky Fly 04-23-2012 01:23 PM

Wasn't talking about Hendrix in the first bit, but yeah. Even if they didn't innovate it, they did it very well.
