What is "kayfabe?"

There are a few terms used frequently on this board that I've never heard before, most of which I've figured out, but this one still stumps me. I think it has something to do with old-school wrestling. :o

*Ric Flair walks through, chops you, and leaves* WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I think there is only one man that can answer this and its gotta be Kayfabeman himself

OssMan 05-07-2004 01:03 AM

Nah, it's like when a wrestler stays in character in real life.

Yeah, basically.

Imagine meeting someone like Tajiri in the street and asking for his autograph. In real life he'd talk to you for a bit and maybe ask your name and stuff. In Kayfabe, he'd act like the nutter he is on tv.

Also,Kayfabe can be a term for many other things as well.

Say you and I are speaking about you cheating on your wife, and
your wife walks in but only I see her - I'd say "Kayfabe",and you'd
be quiet.

Kayfabe could also mean to keep something a secret between
people, not just from the marks. For example,if we shared a lo-
ckerroom and I didn't like someone there and wanted to tell you,
but didn't want you to tell anyone else,I'd say "Kayfabe this, but
I hate so and so"....

It could also mean just about anything, but AssMan & FF got it down :y:

as a way to keep the secrets of their tricks/magic as magic and not just a clever stunt.

if you ever hear the term "breaking kayfabe" it means getting out of character, or revealing some sort of truth that shouldn't have been revealed.

EazyMack 05-08-2004 03:48 AM

New wrinkles in my brain, thanks.

I remember I was in this chatroom one night, and there was this guy named NickVenom who would frequent the chatroom often and I will never forget one of the sickest but funniest things he said and that was:

"If kayfabe is tissue in the anus, then Pat Patterson broke it a long time ago."

EDIT: I forgot it was "is" not "was".
