Music Discussion #7 - Rush
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/metal/various/rush.jpg
What? It's my turn to post this? Oh ok. So, Rush. They've been around for longer than most of us have been alive, they're still going strong today and are probably one of Canada's more successful musical exports. Whether their brand of sort of progressive rock is something TPWW actually likes, I really don't know. But I suppose I'm about to find out. I can't exactly put my finger on what exactly it is I like about them really. They've not got that many "big hits", they've got quite a few long songs and Geddy Lee's voice could be seen as a bit of an acquired taste but there's something in there I really, really like. Kind of sad I've not managed to see them live yet, although while compiling this thread I did discover that they're playing in Glasgow in precisely 364 days time. Should probably get a ticket. They also have a new album out in a couple of weeks. Plug plug. They have far, far too many albums and songs to even attempt to post a bit of every one like Req did with NIN. So here's a few mostly random selections that don't even begin to cover the extent of their career (and skips huge chunks of it): Older-ish stuff SPOILER: show Newer Stuff SPOILER: show |
I know Tom Sawyer, but thats about it. Likely have heard songs by them before but wasn't aware it was them. Excellent choice btw.
|
I'm sorry, I'm really not a big fan of the band.
I recognize that the drummer is pretty good, but the voice of the guy is grating, and the songs just don't appeal to me much. |
Well at least I was right about his voice.
|
I am a big fan
went to see them in concert back in 2010 some of my favorite songs <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FAvQSkK8Z8U?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FAvQSkK8Z8U?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object> <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uwXjnVICb3I?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uwXjnVICb3I?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object> <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Juv5Ifs2fFY?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Juv5Ifs2fFY?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object> and I am sick to death of Tom Sawyer!!!! |
I just can't do it
|
Can't do what?
Embrace it! Whatever it is. |
Dunno why, but I always think Rush did "Aqualung" instead of Jethro Tull.
Also, I think I'm one of the few posters on here that is older than Rush's first album. |
Love Rush.
|
did I miss the big Music Discussion committee meeting where it was decided who was going to post these things in what order or is it just posters going from their own initiative?
|
I don't have much to say about Rush, but a lot of their fans are awesome.
|
Huge, huge Rush fan. One of my top five of all time. I mostly prefer their 80's/keyboard stuff, but generally all their material is awesome. My favourite album from them is 'Grace Under Pressure', with 'Signals' and 'Moving Pictures' a close 2nd and 3rd. Some of my favourite tracks include 'Red Sector A', 'The Enemy Within' and 'Distant Early Warning'.
Unfortunately I've never seen them live, but I hope to rectify this shortly! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3YpmqeAgEA0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Also, the fact Rush still aren't in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is testament to how much of a joke the whole thing is.

They are one of my favourite bands. I saw them live April of 2011 and it was an awesome concert. Tom Sawyer, Time Stand Still, Presto and Closer To The Heart are my favourite songs.

Dunno why it suddenly became "my turn" though, I thought people were just posting these randomly. |
Nah, you have to pick the next person now Baird. That's how it works. Whoever posts them, picks the next person.

As for this thread. Rush are one of those bands I can appreciate. Some of their songs are pretty fuckin good. Also one of my favorite bands to play on Rock Band, cause all the parts are pretty tight. Like one of the only bands with a regularly solid bassline because Geddy Lee is pretty boss.
Never really had a problem with the voice or anything. Really just never got into Rush because the style of music isn't what I would consider one of my favorite sounds. Don't really relate to their music and it is more 'stadium music' than anything IMO. Like, I bet they would put on a fantastic show. They're good though. |
I have two of their albums, "2112" and "Moving Pictures." I find "2112" rather Led Zep-ish, which for some reasons reduces my enjoyment of the album, even though I like Led Zep. "Moving Pictures" is a tasty record, though I haven't listened to it in awhile.

Big Rush fan. Neil Peart is a god.
|
Rush is awesome. Great versatility and timeless longevity.
|
Tom Sawyer is incredible. I absolutely love Rush.
|
RUSH fan of 21 years now. Fairly certain I was listening to them on the way home from birth. Yup.
I never expect anyone to enjoy Geddy's voice, especially as time goes on. But the lyrics are incredible, which brings me to Mr. Lyricist/Incredible drummer Neil Peart. Just listen to this guy talk about life, music, and his methods for everything, and you feel like you've walked out with a million lessons. As well as a sick drumline. Then there's Lerxst. Alex Lifeson, whom I've never had any qualms with, has got to be one of the best guitarists out there. Personal opinion will tell you otherwise, but craft mastery will tell you the truth. The man knows what he's doing all the time. 2112, Moving Pictures, Farewell to Kings, and Test for Echo all just had something great for me to grow up with. And as an adult now, with their albums still being released in my time, I'd say that Snakes and Arrows was a fantastic album, and I honestly can't wait for Clockwork Angels. Been to several of their shows starting back at the Vapor Trails tour. There's no denying that it's damn near insane to try and top a show like theirs. Final statement: Dig it or get the fuck off my planet. |
Bought Clockwork Angels today and listened to it....fuckin awesome...one of their best albums i would say.
|
I love Rush..... not my favourite of all-time, but I got a few singles on my iPod.....
