What are you currently reading?? (general book discussion)

I tend to use the Rate the Last Book You Read thread as a general book discussion so I felt this thread is needed..

I'm close to finishing Stephen King's author edition of The Stand.. It is amazing.. Pretty long but well worth it..

Next up is Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara, which is the first in his first 3 book series.. I've read Magic Kingdom for Sale: SOLD! which I absolutely loved so I'm pretty pump about getting into Brooks' older writings..

So what are you reading?? Any books you've had your eye on?? What type of books do you read?? People might be able to suggest new shit for you..

"The Legend of Magda Searus: The First Confessor" by Terry Goodkind.

Going to start rereading the Symphony of Ages series after I read this, as this will make me up to date on all of Goodkind's works from this continuity.

OssMan 11-03-2012 05:50 PM

"this side of paradise" by f. scott fitzgerald

somewhat relatable, don't really know where it's going, feel like i don't understand most of it

and twilight which sucks

Finally got cracking on A Clash of Kings, and I really don't see it lasting too long. Started it yesterday afternoon and I'm already 260 pages in. Liking it so far.

Ruien 11-04-2012 09:48 PM

The Wheel of Time series. Quiet amazing.

Fignuts 11-04-2012 10:18 PM

Read Cloud Atlas. Absolutely fantastic.

After that, I read American Gods by Neil Gaimen, which was also very good.

Started Dune, but it's kinda boring thus far.

Kris P Lettus 11-05-2012 08:48 AM

I tried to read Dune back in the day and couldnt get through the first act..

Kris P Lettus 11-05-2012 08:49 AM

As far as Sci-Fi is concerned, I need to read Ender's Game because the movie just finished shooting here a few months ago..

I tried to read this after hearing rave reviews for years. End of the first book pissed me off where everything just happened abruptly with the 'rope' and had no valid explanation and simply 'happened' and ended the book and everything was happy and made no sense and I was like 'wtf' and then never read anymore of the series.

Totally agree with you on that point. It was random characters thrown together in the last few chapters (And killing them all off in these chapters too) made no sense. You really have to throw that out of the window with the series. It is a terrible black eye to the books but it is the only one I have enountered so far.

El Vaquero de Infierno 11-05-2012 02:41 PM

I am reading two books at the mo:

John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (which I have actually been reading since July. I like it alot but the impetus to actually read it comes and goes.)

Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of electric Sheep? (nearly finished)

Once they are done I will move on to Othello.

Tommy Gunn 11-05-2012 03:00 PM

next up is helmet for my pillow

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-06-2012 01:59 PM

Been sort of stuck on A Storm of Swords for awhile. Guess I really want to wait to see it on the tv series.

El Fangel 11-06-2012 03:03 PM

Dude, I just finished that. Finish it now, the last 300 pages are fantastic and set the tone at full speed ahead.

El Fangel 11-06-2012 03:05 PM

Oh and anyone ever read Atlas Shrugged? I know the stigma around Ayn Rand but Ill ignore that if its worth reading.

How do you feel about thirty page monolgues.

Fignuts 11-07-2012 11:16 AM

Ugh. Less than 100 pages in on Dune and almost ready to drop it.

El Fangel 11-07-2012 06:09 PM

This Is A Call - Life and Times of Dave Grohl.

The Condor 11-07-2012 08:35 PM

"Zen and the Art of Writing" by Ray Bradbury. Allows you to view the mind of one of the 20th century's finest writers.

Dune kicks arse. Stick with it.

I have Dune Messiah in my book pile waiting to be read.

Kane Knight 11-18-2012 06:15 PM

I finished Princess Bride and moved on to two books I didn't like enough to finish, so now I'm onto John Dies at the End.

Kris P Lettus 11-18-2012 06:18 PM

Princess Bride is amazing..

loopydate 11-24-2012 10:07 AM

The Night Eternal, the last book in The Strain trilogy

Also, just finished Ender's Game, but can't find the second book in that series anywhere. Gonna have to Amazon it, probably.

Is the second one any good? I'm a bit undecided whether to read it, the first one left me a bit cold at the end.

loopydate 11-25-2012 08:20 PM

It starts really slow, but it picks up by the midpoint. I tore through the last hundred pages, then had to buy TNE. There are still some things that bothered me, but the Ancients play a much more interesting role, and the onset of The Night Eternal (the plot point, not the book) was legitimately terrifying. There's a lot more of Setrakian's backstory, too, and that helps put a lot of the first book in perspective.

The Condor 11-25-2012 09:00 PM

Reading "Tender is the Night" by F. Scott Fitzgerald currently, and in my opinion it is much better than the "Great Gatsby." I recommend it highly.

Kris P Lettus 11-25-2012 09:04 PM

I got like 80 pages left in The Stand.. It is great but I am really ready to finish it..

Fignuts 11-26-2012 01:49 AM

Darth Bane Trilogy is worth a read.

Darth Plagueis even more so.

El Fangel 11-26-2012 03:45 AM

Literally just finished "A Feast for Crows"

Took 8 days to finish A Storm of Swords

Took a month or so to finish this.

976 pages of some of the dullest, uninteresting pages I have ever read. Several times I considered reading the Cliffnotes instead of forcing myself to read it.

Really wish I had now.

Kris P Lettus 11-26-2012 11:45 AM

Finished The Stand and it was absolutely amazing..

SPOILER: show
I teared up when Stu Redman told Tom Cullen about Nick's death.. Tom Cullen was the best character in the book and his sadness hurt me to the core..

A few notes:

-When Stu and Tom are looking for a car, why didn't they try all the cars with manual trannys to see if the batteries were good??

After getting the truck started, why not hunt down some jumper cables and jump off a car with a manual tranny?? I still can't imagine Stu driving a Stick with a broken right leg..

Those things bothered me, other than that the book was excellent..

I will start The Sword of Shannara today.. The only Terry Brooks book I've read was "Magic Kingdom For Sale: SOLD!" and I absolutely loved it.. Really looking forward to diving into his earlier works..

cardsharkrob 11-26-2012 12:51 PM

I read Merry Christmas Alex Cross by James Patterson a couple nights ago. Really good book and fits well into the series of the book. Different then others as this one in my opinion was more faster and action paced than others. I can't wait till the next Alex Cross book is released

Fignuts 11-26-2012 07:53 PM

Actually just downloaded every star wars book ever. Will read them chronologically, and rate them here.

Not gonna read any of the young adult novels though.

First up is The Lost Tribe of the Sith E-Novellas.

Jamesdawn 12-11-2012 01:45 AM

I am reading a book name "Five Point Someone".

Requiem 12-11-2012 12:39 PM

Just started reading The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins

XL 12-18-2012 06:23 PM

Lord Of The Flies. It's not drawing me in so far.

Kris P Lettus 12-18-2012 06:25 PM

I could never get into it either..
