Perhaps the greatest Rock band of all time broke up....Led Zeppelin broke up with the following statement:

‎"We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were."

Probably a good thing they did. 80's Zep would have to compete with Prince, Michael Jackson, Van Halen and Slayer/Metallica et al. They were meant for their time and are respected now because they stayed there and didn't screw with their sound TOO much like the 80's would most likely have led to.

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page did very well in the 1980s. Page formed a supergroup The Firm with Paul Rodgers from Bad Company, Chris Slade from Uriah Heep, and Tony Franklin, who would later join another supergroup, Blue Murder, while Plant had a great solo career. I consider Plant's 1988 album, Now & Zen, his greatest solo work.

Solo work is different than a collaborative band effort.

True, but nonetheless, they proved they can still put out good music.

Ridiculous. Most of the 80s was shit and cheese. They wouldn't have had to directly compete with any of these acts. That's like saying LZ couldn't have competed in the 70s because of the likes of John Denver, the Bee Gees, and Elton John.

Van Halen would be the closest, but they were never going to compete with pop or Queercore.

More or less speaking of the evolution of artists. You don't believe Zepplin would have employed synths and experimental sounds that others did in the 80's? I'm speaking to the fact that if they stayed together, it's not a given that the catalogue would have remained as good or the same type of music. Like Elvis dying before it got really bad. Just a different perspective to consider.
