Punk/Rock Promo

Mainly for the people who feel Punk looked better than Rock in the promo...

Keith 01-08-2013 12:10 AM

It was pretty even, in my mind. One didn't overshadow or outperform the other. It was good.

Bad News Gertner 01-08-2013 12:46 AM

Punk is so God awful. They have to make the Rock look weak just to pump up CM Punk, when Punk isn't remotely on the Rock's level. Tonight showed why Punk has killed the WWE's ratings.

MoFo 01-08-2013 01:04 AM

What Gertner said.

Rock was lame as fuck but Punk's super serius act is boring to watch. Calling him Dwayne and using him being a successful film star as some sort of insult is dumb.

Fignuts 01-08-2013 01:18 AM

Comparing the promos like we did with the cena build up is dumb.

Punk's character isn't supposed to make you like him. Of course the rock's promo is going to be more charismatic and energetic.

Poit 01-08-2013 01:20 AM

Honestly, Rock's promo just seemed painfully juvenile at times. Even though Punk said nothing new, he also didn't say anything that made me cringe.

A heel used an insult you don't agree with? Appalling.

Droford 01-08-2013 02:11 AM

I mentioned that punk looked like a little kid in the ring with Rock..

#1-norm-fan 01-08-2013 02:15 AM

Rock has become corny. He still gets a ridiculous reaction and will no matter what but the "here's a random silly sounding phrase to call my opponent followed by the catchphrases" thing is cringe-worthy. That made up about half his promo. The other half wasn't bad.

Keith 01-08-2013 02:20 AM

I agree with what has been said about Rock's promos being cringe-worthy at times. Tonight, the moment he said "Cookie Puss" I just felt awkward. My mind went back to his "We will rock you" song, all the "Fruity Pebbles" talk, Kung Pao Bitch.

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-08-2013 02:22 AM

Punk won the verbal joust which is why Rock had to Rock Bottom him out of no where to save face.

Yeah, Punk showed some longterm consistency by sticking with the message he's held for the last 414 days. It fits Punk's character to claim the moral high ground of not resulting to playground insults, though I enjoyed his hyperbole about holding the title "20 or 30 years" if wrestling during the Sammartino Era of WWE/WWWF.

He didn't use being a movie star as an insult. He just said that every time he comes back he's going to kick his ass.

Cena was the one who tried to use the movie star thing as an insult not Punk. Cena stole using "Dwayne" as an insult from Punk.

slik 01-08-2013 02:25 AM

Punk was much better.

Rock on his worst day is still above average, even as in this case, I wasn't crazy about the content.

Curd 01-08-2013 02:26 AM

But in terms of intimidation factor, I'd be more scared of Rock and would believe, as a casual mark, that Rock is going to kill Punk at 'Mania. Maybe Cena will interfere to help Punk retain as retaliation against Rock for the past two Wrestlemanias.

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-08-2013 02:28 AM

Since they are fighting at the Royal Rumble killing him at WrestleMania would be kind of hard.

Keith 01-08-2013 02:29 AM

I'm a little surpised WWE didn't wait until WrestleMania to have Rock vs Punk.

I don't think that'll happen now, so I'd like to see Rock vs Lesnar at 'Mania. I wouldn't like to see Rock vs Cena 2 unless it involves Rock going heel.

Oh, OK. My memory left me again. Thanks for your regular clarifications! :)

They wanted to kick off the Road to WrestleMania with a bang and not just the normal Royal Rumble match bang. A WWE title match that actually matters at a Royal Rumble. Been a long time since that was true.

Keith 01-08-2013 02:36 AM

That they did.

James Steele 01-08-2013 03:06 AM

Overall, I thought it was even and got me even more excited about the match. Some of The Rock's insults made me grit my teeth, but CM Punk rolled with it. CM Punk's long-winded "pipebomb" thing just seemed really weird. I get the whole idea of being against "the people" as he faces "the peoples' champion" but it seemed like rambling...which could be what they were shooting for. Easily the best part was the simplest part - "I'm going to kick your ass, Rock. You can't box with God" and The Rock talking about how great CM Punk is, but he isn't The Rock and so on and so forth.

Keith 01-08-2013 03:08 AM

About CM Punk, I do agree that sometimes he tries too hard to be this "rebel", this guy who isn't afraid to speak the truth and doesn't care what anyone, including the fans, thinks. We get it. He's a heel now. But he's better off when he's organic and just does his thing.

James Steele 01-08-2013 04:09 AM

It just seemed like he was rambling on and on. He played the system to chance the system, but he can't change the system so he is just going to dominate and patronize the system?

I liked Punk's stuff about guys like Kidd getting less time and attention than an imaginary child.

Bad News Gertner 01-08-2013 04:45 AM

If Kidd could not cause half the audience to turn their t.v off he wouldn't.

Agreed, both were awesome.

Shadrick 01-08-2013 05:23 AM

Yeah I thought this was even. And for it to be there first go around, I can't wait to see how everything plays out with their interactions from here on.

Corporate CockSnogger 01-08-2013 06:03 AM

You know, for a group of people who are supposed to be wrestling fans, a bunch of you guys sure do seem to hate professional wrestling.

It had fun parts, it had serious parts. It was good, enjoy it.

The Whole F'n Show 01-08-2013 08:18 AM

Well since I am the only one on the "other side" haha, I guess I will try to explain. It just seems kind of like last year with the leadup to mania, where Rock was pretty stale and stumbling all over his words and whatnot, but the last raw before mania, he was gold. It would be kind of ridiculous to assume that the Rock could hang with the best on the mic on a consistent basis when he has been there once. I'd expect it to be much better the closer we get to the rumble, but who knows what creative has in mind for the whole angle. Still see Rock winning the title at the rumble, but wouldn't surprise me to see it go wither way.

Schlomey 01-08-2013 08:59 AM

I loved Punk's promo. Not as much as the original "pipebomb" but I am glad that he got time before the Rock came out.

I will agree with the few that said Rock's performance was momentarily "cringe-worthy" and there were moments I was glad my wife was asleep in bed or I would have reached embarrassment for watching.

While this is no primaries debate, I would say that Punks performance last night makes me want to see this match. Especially the part where he kept saying, "I'm going to kick your ass." His facials and his tone made him seem legitimate.

As I posted in the RAW thread, I'm looking forward to Punk vs Rock already way more than Rock vs Cena.

That was round 1, I assume things will get better the more time they get.

MoFo 01-08-2013 10:48 AM

Phillip needs to learn that calling wrestlers by their real names isn't edgy, just dumb.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-08-2013 10:51 AM

I don't know what's wrong with Rock when he comes back. While I'm watching 2004, everytime he came back he was on fire. Are they pushing scripts on him?

Punk though

#BROKEN Hasney 01-08-2013 10:51 AM

OK, not THAT good. I just wanted to use the GIF.

Keith 01-08-2013 11:05 AM

I wonder if at some point we'll see Heyman and Rock go at each other on the mic. That should be good.

Now that I think about it, I want more Paul E. Everytime he gets on the mic it's gold.

whiteyford 01-08-2013 11:38 AM

It was better than Rock/Cena at least.

Flash Funk 01-08-2013 11:52 AM

I voted for Punk, but I am extremely biased. Was entertained by the whole thing.

If it were any other wrestler, I'd agree, but it makes sense for the rock.

Emperor Smeat 01-08-2013 02:24 PM

I thought both were pretty good although had no idea what a Cookie Puss was when Rock mentioned it.

Rock isn't going to suddenly become the TV-14 type promo machine he was over a decade ago considering RAW is now a PG show which is why he's now more of a pandering or crowd entertainer with his promos.

Also think Rock fits a lot better with Punk than with Cena so both are only going to get better leading into the Rumble (and hopefully till Mania).

Corporate CockSnogger 01-08-2013 02:29 PM

What's gonna close the show at the Rumble? The Rumble match itself or Rock v Punk?

I think the winner of the rumble is either Cena or Ryback, and if it's Ryback (and he goes on to challenge Big Show) then I think it'll be Punk v Rock closing the show.
