Tomb Raider's Trendy Reboot

Hey, the reviews are coming in and it's not... bad. Very positive all around, although some reviews like the Eurogamer and Gametrailers one seem very negative, then just slap an 8 on it. It's tempting me to pick up the PC version.

But the deaths. Jesus, I saw this gif and just was not expecting this. Not sure if it's that brutal throughout.

Anyone else looking at this? Multiplayer is mediocre and tacked on from what I'm hearing, but the single player more than makes up for it.

mitchables 02-26-2013 07:06 AM

it's pretty high on my list of things to buy this year. i loved a lot of the original franchise, and the early crystal dynamics games, so kinda looking forward to seeing how this one turns out and if it successfully reinvigorates the series.

Drakul 02-26-2013 07:49 AM

I tried to play one of the TR games on PS1. The one that starts in her mansion with some butler following you around.
I just didn't like it so I'll be skipping this.

The death is brutal and I can't say I like it. I think it's because it's Lara, a character that, for all her overly sexualised appeal, was a strong character. So seeing her impaled and hopelessly clawing to get free is a bit unsettling. Even if she is completely fictional.
If it was a random GTA ped or one of the MK guys, I'd probably have found it cool.

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2013 08:11 AM

Drakul you're being unreasonable here.

Yeah there's actually a history of hilariously brutal deaths in the series.

Kane Knight 02-26-2013 12:16 PM

This has my interest, but I'm still probably holding off for a lower price point.

LoDownM 02-26-2013 04:09 PM

It's a great game, and yes, the environmental deaths are all that brutal.

I never got far enough into the one TR game I played to see brutal deaths. If Lara slammed into the spike and was just dead, I'd probably be a little more ok with it. I think it's the struggle afterwards that gets to me.
Again, if it was Scorpion or Sonya that was struggling to get off a spike I'd probably be ok with it because that's the kind of thing I go into games like MK expecting to see.

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2013 04:29 PM

Well don't die. Take your discomfort as incentive to live.

Miotch 02-26-2013 04:54 PM

This all looks very Uncharted to me, moreso than the original run, so I'll probably get it or borrow it for a play through at some point.

Never really liked Tomb Raider that much at all, I'll just finish Uncharted 2 or something.

Disturbed316 02-27-2013 03:50 AM

Only ever played Tomb Raider Legend, the T-Rex in the original scared the shit out of me when playing the demo back in the day.

XCaliber 02-27-2013 04:11 PM

This was on my upcoming game cue but I wanna try completing FOC before I buy it plus I also have the God of War Collection I've yet to play. Never really played much aside from a couple of demos from this franchise yet I didn't get into it despite liking platform adventure games. Must admit the rebooted Lara seems a lot more badass the her previous incarnation but I'm not sure the graphic death scenes were all that necessary.

Miotch 02-27-2013 07:51 PM

What is wrong with you people?

'The graphic death scenes in my VIDEO GAME aren't all that necessary"

ffs

Purgatory 02-27-2013 09:39 PM

The Uncharted series borrowed from Tomb Raider in the first place. The first time I played Uncharted, it reminded me alot of Tomb Raider so I enjoyed it immensely.

Unfortunately, I do have to wait a bit before I can grab Tomb Raider because I just got Far Cry 3. :(

Raven Reaper 03-04-2013 12:21 AM

halfway through playing this game... The voice acting may be not much but still, you can also melee sneak attack from behind much like Assassin's Creed too with your hook. There's even side tombs as an extra XP stuff to explore and puzzles but I didn't get to finish it.. So, it really gets an overdose adrenaline when you're falling off the river or the flaming temple platforms, I still agree with Conan O Brien's review of it.

ANd I didn't get the part where she gets impaled in the river.. All I had to do was use a shotgun to blast the debris and spikes that are blocking you while sliding all the way down.

mitchables 03-04-2013 03:52 AM

some store broke street date here on friday so all the other vendors released it over the weekend. picked it up yesterday. i really like it. easily the best game in the series, and a long-overdue reboot to everything. 9/10 would recommend

And before really, it was basically a new gen version of the old Prince of Persia games at the time and it had some similar sorts of traps and mad deaths. If I got frustrated at a certain part I'd make her dive off a cliff a few times into a crumpled heap.

I loved the Tomb Raider games back in the day, they were atmospheric and a bit scary and seemed to take ages to finish.

Raven Reaper 03-04-2013 08:59 PM

To me, Lara Croft is the Indiana Jones of the gameworld minus the bullwhip. :p

Miotch 03-04-2013 09:24 PM

insightful

It's early in development but for those who've played it already is there any known or unknown actress out there you'd like to see in this role?

James Steele 03-05-2013 10:05 PM

Melissa Joan Hart

Kalyx triaD 03-06-2013 03:56 AM

An unknown British chick.

Kalyx triaD 03-06-2013 03:30 PM

Ten years ago Kiera Nightily(SP) would have been great.

Miotch 03-06-2013 03:34 PM

Her breasts are about 7% of the required size to play Lara.

Kalyx triaD 03-06-2013 03:53 PM

Maybe past Lara.

Miotch 03-06-2013 04:30 PM

Or current Lara.

http://canadianonlinegamers.com/wp-c...t-240x225.jpeg

OK, maybe not 7%, but still like 25%.

She would certainly look the part if she put some weight on then she would be capable of playing the more physical side of Lara not just the scientist.

Kalyx triaD 03-06-2013 04:32 PM

She has split hairs too, Miotch!

That wouldn't have been hard. Actors do that sort of thing all the time.

Miotch 03-06-2013 04:56 PM

Rose Byrne has the look and is British, but I would probably have a hard time believing her in the role.

The Destroyer 03-06-2013 04:59 PM

Rose Byrne is most definitely not British.

Miotch 03-06-2013 05:05 PM

Oh wait, Australian. My mistake.

According to people who've played the PC version, the new hair physics engine ends up being a bigger hassle than its worth even on high end PCs (Ultra settings). By turning it off, the framerate and performance ends up improving by a good 200% to 300% (30-35 FPS to 70+ FPS).

Used to make her swan dive off the staircase in her mansion in TR2. The sound effect for her neck snapping was brutal.

Holy hell that video had me in tears.

Never cared for the series, but this looks like worth picking up!
