So I'm going to wrestling school.

I've been playing with the idea for the past few months, but finally decided two weeks ago that I was going to give it a shot. Don't think I'd be able to live with myself if I just woke up 30 years from now and never completely committed to it while I was young.

So I found a trainer in my area by the name of Oliver John. The guy is extremely humble, knowledgeable, passionate and more interested in properly teaching you the craft than charging you excessive amounts of money for little training.

So yeah, I've been eager to talk about it. Practice was pretty basic last week, and unfortunately I'm only able to practice once a week given my work schedule.

I'll use this thread to update my progress. I'd also love to hear and tips from guys who wrestle here or have ever been to school consistently.

THANK U FOR READING MY THREAD

Almost did it for a laugh a few years back, Jake Roberts had one a few hours away, but ended up not doing it. So kudos.

I also didn't mention that I went to a different wrestling school for a few months back in 2006-2007, but I wasn't taking it all too seriously back then and generally hated the experience/people.

Awesome Johnny Lawrence. It looks like you got a good teacher.

voncouch 03-05-2013 03:12 PM

Congrats on fulfilling a dream, buddy. I trained back when I was 18 for a few years, worked a few shows. Didn't keep it up because in order to do anything with it, it has to be your whole world. And I just had too many other things going on in my life at the time. But I had an incredibly fun time, met some great people and I got to say I was able to live a lifelong dream at 18.

My only tip is respect. We saw alot of guys in the school come in and either didn't have respect for how hard it was, didn't have respect for the basics or didn't have respect for the seniors. Show your respects and you'll do fine.

Best of luck, stay safe and enjoy the ride.

Some dream it, you're actually doing it. There's something to be said for that, so congrats.

Go make it happen, but more importantly, have fun.

AJHayes 03-05-2013 04:31 PM

Congrats, it's a blast. Be safe and have fun.

Razzamajazz 03-05-2013 04:42 PM

can you run the ropes for an hour nonstop? then you ain't no rassler

srsly though, good on ya for going after something. i've wanted to go to lance storm's school for a while, but am getting a little older and fatter, so realistically it may never happen. plus i need more money

DaveBrawl 03-05-2013 04:49 PM

Congrats Johnny. I went to one back in October a couple of times, I made it through the first round of tryouts, but it was a 2+ hour drive to get to the school twice a week so I couldn't make it there from work by the time school started so I had to stop since punctuality was a big thing for them.

Corporate CockSnogger 03-05-2013 05:27 PM

That's sweet. Best of luck to you, hope it's a blast.

Rollermacka 03-05-2013 05:30 PM

So what kinda trampoline are you gonna be learning on? :p

J/K Good luck, man. Hope you can get past the early pain and make it to the fun in the ring

Battlekat 03-05-2013 05:54 PM

Don't post here often, but congrats man. I just started training about a month ago and am loving it. Hope it works out for you.

Bad News Gertner 03-05-2013 05:57 PM

Make sure you no sell everything. Shows you're tough.

whiteyford 03-05-2013 06:13 PM

You'll know you've made it when Gertner accuses you of being a vanilla midget and/or questions your workrate. Something to aim for.

Yeah, I'm taking any and all advice at this point. After practice last week I took a few minutes taking to some of the other guys asking what I could improve on. Everyone's very forthcoming, which is great.

Triple Naitch 03-05-2013 06:54 PM

Good luck.

"Old School" Oliver John, former Portland Wrestling heavyweight champion! Being in Portland Wrestling and losing to Sheamus on ECW are the only things I know about him. I liked his work in Portland tho.

Good luck, T-Money

What about me? :(

This is my tenth year as a wrestler now (started training in the Summer of 2003 and made my pro debut in January 2004).

Rammsteinmad 03-06-2013 12:39 PM

Good luck btw TB. Keep us updated on how things are going.

Yeah, went awesome last night. Lots of work on the mats yesterday so my body is thoroughly detested today. Finished the day with a challenge that if anyone could do 500 standing squats they'd get an all you can eat dinner at some place. I finished with 132, and brought shame to my family

Curd 03-06-2013 02:51 PM

If you have nothing to lose, then badda bing! You have my moral support. :y:

Juan 03-06-2013 03:12 PM

Good luck, buddy :)

#BROKEN Hasney 03-09-2013 04:32 PM

Good luck man. I'll look out for you when they call you Jamie Johnson on NXT or something.

parkmania 03-09-2013 06:25 PM

A guy I used to work with is training at the Wild Samoans school.

Best of luck.

i've done that before.

unless it was 500 in a row without stopping, then hell... :shifty:

mike adamle 03-10-2013 09:50 AM

So how much does wrestling school cost? Always wanted to do it but I live out in the middle of nowhere. It's looking like my job is gonna have me going down near NYC in a few months, sounds like a good chance to give it a try.

Tb1 03-10-2013 10:42 PM

The place I'm at now is only $10/session, but where I was at before was $150/month. I think most places are significantly more expensive.

slik 03-11-2013 01:23 AM

Best of luck!

:)

Lock Jaw 03-11-2013 01:32 AM

You don't need to learn how to wrestle, you just need to come up with a premium gimmick.

What, are you getting sick? Does that mean your not gonna be working FTW this Sat? That would suck, somebody needs to take that Ashton Spears down a peg....
