Retro Analysis Thread: Miz vs Cena - Wrestlemania 27

So lately there has been a lot of talk about The Miz and how he either sucks in the ring, sucks as being a babyface and/or still some talk about his WWE Title match at Wrestlemania 27 not being up to par.

Moments ago I re-watched the match as a stand alone feature to see if it was as bad as some say it was and more importantly as bad as I remember it being.

Start: The entrances with the life/career retrospectives were awesome and really made The Miz look like he belonged in the main event.

Match: Started slow and built. Miz and Reilly were PERFECT together. While I found the action to not be as amazing as past Mania main events I really truly enjoyed the "old school" vibe of having a good guy and face of the company facing off against the evil champion with a straight up heel manager.

End: At the time and to this day, The Miz is the afterthought in regards to the ending and how future events panned out. That very moment set up the next 2 full years of WWE which is totally not something we expected from the WWE writers.

Conclusion: As a stand alone match I really enjoyed it this time around. The Miz not only held his own throughout the match but from beginning to end played the role of dastardly villain complete with evil heel managers, exposed turnbuckles and head shots with a steel case to a T.

While he hasn't had a match or a moment like that since that night at Wrestlemania 27 I am going to be part of the minority and say that I want the Miz back in the WWE main event (preferably as a heel, of course).

So now it's up to you TPWW-Universe. Re-watch the match from beginning to end as a stand-alone match and create a new and less objectified opinion on Miz vs Cena from WM 27.

Miz to me as a Face has ALWAYS been terrbile, can't stand him want him off my TV. As a heel however I find him very good especially on the mic. I'd like to see him be the top heel on "Smackdown" and go after Del Rio for the belt.

James Steele 03-27-2013 12:27 PM

The Miz isn't bad in the ring, but his babyface character is brutal. "Really?" is more annoying than "What?!"

James Steele 03-27-2013 12:27 PM

At least when he annoys me as a heel, he is doing his job.

The "really" thing started when he was a heel which makes that point invalid. I see what you are saying, however, and will agree that The Miz makes a shitty Babyface, even with Ric Flair and the Figre-Four leg lock. That might work on marks but it takes more than an endorsement to make him legit.

if it looks like a douche.....smells like a douche, talks like a douche....IT'S A DOUCHE. End of story.

James Steele 03-27-2013 12:30 PM

Exactly. Douchebags make horrible babyfaces.

Not gonna rewatch the match, but I love the Miz and I'm a fan of Cena, and I enjoyed the match when it happened. Sure it was annoying that Miz was seen as an afterthought, but that's kinda what happens when you throw in the biggest wrestling superstar there is and have him start feuding with Cena. Miz never should have lost at Extreme Rules, that was just stupid booking. Should've kept him going strong, have a feud with another top face and start solidifying him in the main event.

His promo work all round that era was great and he really should've been built upon as being a conniving, sneaky main event heel, kind of similar to Edge. He was over as a heel, and it was only down to poor booking that he regressed.

Even as a fan of his, I'll admit his face work isn't the best right now, but he's growing into it more and more each week, and it's not as though he's been given much to work with other than "give me that title"

I thought it was a great main event, for the same reasons you listed Schlomey. It had a damn good feel to it and I didn't think it was horrible the first time I watched it. His babyface gimmick is pretty shitty, but he is still great in the ring. He "get's it" and has a bright future, I believe.

Corporate CockSnogger 03-27-2013 12:51 PM

Also you could put any rising star in that spot at that Mania and they'd have been playing third wheel. You could probably even put most established guys like Jericho, Edge, Kane, Big Show etc in that spot and they'd be third wheel.

CM Punk, who is one of their top 3 biggest full time guys right now, was practically the third wheel in the most recent run of things, and that's even considering that The Rock showing up now isn't as "Holy shit The Rock's here!" as it was 2 years ago.

I agree, he's not the best, but he's not the worst. Great ambassador outside the ring.

On a side note: Miz seems to bring up the fact that he was in the main event @ Wrestlemania a whole bunch. Surely he has other bullet points he could pump...

Nothing better than that really.

Where is the as awesome as I remember option?

He is having sex with Maryse too

Heisenberg 03-27-2013 01:29 PM

Right, and he bangs Maryse. He was pursuing her in storyline, perhaps he could let us know how the banging is.

Especially considering he retained.

Shadrick 03-27-2013 02:16 PM

Miz looked like kind of a beast during the build up. I thought that was pretty nifty.

His bullets are being created, now we sit and wait for him to use them.

DaveBrawl 03-27-2013 03:45 PM

Really wish he would stop with the Wooo like Flair. Seems so forced coming from Flair nowadays, but it's even more awkward coming from Miz.

Haven't watched the match, but I remember enjoying the Miz's run in the main event. Not so much these days though.

Emperor Smeat 03-27-2013 04:14 PM

I'd argue a bit that Miz being an afterthought occurred well before Mania considering most of the build towards Mania was about Rock and Cena than Miz. Even he had to remind everyone to stop ignoring him.

The match itself was decent with the best thing being Miz's hype video. Using a choir for Cena was a bit ridiculous and didn't prevent the audience from booing him anyways.

In regards to Miz himself, his character doesn't mesh well as a face or as a submission wrestler. He's similar to Orton where being an arrogant face or tweener fits a lot better.

You mean like The Rock? Or Austin when he was giving a stunner to everyone including innocent women?

James Steele 03-27-2013 09:38 PM

Asshole =/= Douchebag

Not surprised you don't know the difference.

Theo Dious 03-27-2013 09:49 PM

Second worst Wrestlemania ending, period.

Schlomey 03-28-2013 11:15 AM

Re-watched another match from WM 27 last night. Edge vs Del Rio. It was decent but looking at the rest of the card I couldn't find even 1 other match I wanted to watch (minus HHH vs Taker but I have seen that at least 5 times already).

The undercard for Mania 27 looks, on paper, no better than this years.

The Condor 03-28-2013 11:19 AM

I'm always pretty positive and try to make the best of the schlock they may roll out in WWE, but this is one of the few times(along with the Bagwell/Booker T RAW main event) that I immediately recoiled and spewed venom. Hated it then and have barely softened in the two years since.

Ultra Mantis 03-28-2013 11:44 AM

Wonder how much Alex Riley splashed out on that fancy jacket that he got to wear a total of three times.

Corporate CockSnogger 03-28-2013 11:45 AM

Poll is biased. Where's the "as good as I remember" option?

Savio 03-28-2013 07:44 PM

That's correct it makes you an asshole

Curd 03-28-2013 08:07 PM

The pacing of the Cena-Miz WM27 match was about as good as some of the Cena-Punk matches. Having Riley cheat against Super Cena was a nice red herring to distract fans from the possibility of Rock slamming Cena until it happened.

Tazz Dan 03-28-2013 11:48 PM

I also re-watched this recently and quite enjoyed it as I usually do. Was a good match, and Miz held his own. Watching him knocked out to fuck but still being able to finish the match was amazing.

Tazz Dan 03-28-2013 11:49 PM

I voted as number two, as I thought it said as good as I remember. Which is an option that should have been on the poll.

So you and James Steele agree. Beating a woman randomly is not a douchebag move.

James Steele is a misogynistic asshole/douchebag.

James Steele 03-29-2013 12:21 AM

I've been called worse.

Shadrick 03-29-2013 04:28 AM

Far worse.
