Shelton Benjamin his matches with HHH and every other world champ and former champs were golden (no pun intended)

Billy Gunn had several fag gimmicks. Could you be more specific?

Shelton's failure to be a main eventer was no real surprise to anyone paying attention. I like Shelton, but he seemed to choke whenever he got near the big time.

The Snake 04-29-2013 12:22 AM

Bobby Lashley tho he might have gotten slightly higher than mid-card admittedly

Keith 04-29-2013 12:25 AM

"Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner.

Main evented with Triple H, and that was it.

The Condor 04-29-2013 12:39 AM

Scotty was a world champ in WCW I think that should qualify as a main eventer.

Keith 04-29-2013 12:45 AM

I thought we were talking about WWE exclusively. I don't know why, but that's what I thought.

Nevermind then.

The Condor 04-29-2013 12:47 AM

You're forgiven :)

scatterbrain28 05-15-2013 12:14 AM

Chris Jericho
Chris Benoit

These guys got the World belt, then they were putting over mid-carders.

Slightly off topic: I thought Dean Malenko would at least make IC title level.

Bad News Gertner 05-15-2013 12:16 AM

Malenko was soooooooo boring

scatterbrain28 05-15-2013 12:17 AM

Hi Gertner.

At the very least I always found Malenko more likeable than Chris Benoit.

Supposedly, Curt Henning was gonna win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and become the major face for TNA in 2003 (but he passed away before that could happen)

To the point at hand
Wrath (Bryan Clark)
Sean O'Haire
Monty Brown (Marcus Cor Von)

Both were pretty meh. Benoit > Malenko though without a doubt.

Shisen Kopf 05-15-2013 02:04 AM

Benoit knew how to properly finish a woman.

To be fair on Monty Brown, it isn't like he got injured, arrested, politicked, backstabbed, depushed, or otherwise derailed because of something within the business itself. Real life events outside of the wrestling world completely got in the way of that... so this doesn't seem like it should count.

He would have at least been multiple time IC and/or US champion at this point. And prob'ly thrown into a tag team for at least one run as a champ there as well. If situations changed, Monty could prob'ly walk into Extreme Rules, cost either Thwagger or Of The River their match, and be hotshotted into the main event pictue similar to how they initially shoehorned Skippy.

I agree with MVP, JoMo, and Benjamin. Expecting too much too soon from Shelton while WWE was in one of those "OH SHIT, WE KINDA NEED FRESH FACES RIGHT NOW!!!" modes was part of his problem. I would liken him to Sin Cara in the whole trying to make him a big deal way too fast thing.

On the TNA side of things:
Elijah Burke
"the future of the company" Jay Lethal
Motor City Machine Guns

Mr. Nerfect 05-17-2013 09:30 PM

If Shelton Benjamin returned to the WWE, I think they would find a way to make him a main eventer in the current climate. I'd love to see him working with Del Rio, Swagger, Ziggler and that crew.

Malenko didn't have that ridiculous "I'm so angry!" face (It might have been better if it wasn't coupled with him talking like he's reading directly from a cue card). That puts him over Benoit.

Plus the fact that Malenko was stellar at his job as a guy who was as a serious, no bullshit, intimidating force in the cruiserweight division and was never pushed as a main eventer for some God awful reason. But that's more just retarded booking at fault than Benoit.

Let's be serious. It was Dean's voice. He was a terrible promo guy who was never going to get any better because he wasn't going to get the mic time to practice. He had a gravely voice that was beyond Stevie Richards/Brian Pillman charming and more like forks in the garbage disposal "what he hell did he just say?" territory. Perfect example of a guy who "looked the shit" but needed a mouthpiece.

#1-norm-fan 05-17-2013 11:45 PM

And that's why "a top dog in the cruiserweight division" suited him perfectly. He was never over-pushed. Like I said, I'd admit that most of my dislike for Benoit started when he got over-pushed and the fact that it never happened with Malenko made me enjoy him for what he was.

Mr. Nerfect 05-17-2013 11:54 PM

Dean Malenko was really good for what he was and he has a nice job as a producer with the WWE because of it. I'd love to see him play an on-air character at some point. Even if he was just the corner man of Antonio Cesaro or something.

Shisen Kopf 05-18-2013 10:17 AM

This is probably the best thread in the history of tpww. Very serious business.
