Do you consider Survivor Series in the same league as SummerSlam and The Royal Rumble?

I've come to think of MITB as one of the 'big 4' over the last several years and have come to regard Survivor Series as more of a 'b' show.

Just curious if anyone else finds Survivor Series a step or two below SummerSlam and The Royal Rumble in terms of big ppvs each year?

whiteyford 08-10-2013 11:47 AM

Its not promoted in the same vein as the other 3 from the 'big 4', the survivor series matches don't even seem to feature as much, if it all in some years, so it just comes across as another PPV to me.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-10-2013 12:10 PM

Survivor Series was cool back in the day cause you'd see people together that you wouldn't expect. Now they throw together random tag matches every week so it's just like whatever.

Deadly Games was so tits though.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-10-2013 12:12 PM

I agree about Money in the Bank being a bigger deal now. I'd say Elimination Chamber too.

Evil Vito 08-10-2013 12:15 PM

<font color=goldenrod>Nope. The PPV has lost its meaning. Now you'll get like one Survivor Series match a year. Was great when they'd have several.</font>

DAMN iNATOR 08-10-2013 12:18 PM

I've always thought of it as one of the Big 4 WWE pay-per-view events, even despite the fact that nowadays you're lucky to see 1 or 2 traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series Elimination tag team matches. A shame, really. And even more sad, yet true...most people, I'm sure, unlike myself, actually would not miss it if WWE did away with it like they were going to back around 2009 or so. :(

Innovator 08-10-2013 12:57 PM

Yeah, I'd day the big 4 are now Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Money in the Bank, and Summerslam.

MoFo 08-10-2013 01:09 PM

Rumble and Mania are the big two, everything else is a B PPV.

Emperor Smeat 08-10-2013 02:12 PM

Out of the "Big 4", it's been the weakest for the past few years.

Based on the past couple of years, Money in the Bank and Extreme Rules have both been a lot better than Survivor Series. Either one would be worthy of being part of the new "Big 4" for ppvs.

This.

I know historically they promote summer slam as the 2nd biggest but they have seemed like every other ppv these days. The rumble match alone sells a card and I feel like people get much more excited for it.

Survivor Series has had phases:

Early incarnation that featured that specific match was fine.

97-2002 were great because it was a good show each year and it started with Montreal.

The past 10 years have no been kind to it.

As far as Survivor Series 2002 goes, 1 pic says 1,000 words:

Don't even feel like Summerslam is in the same league as the Royal Rumble to be honest.

Heisenberg 08-10-2013 06:47 PM

It fuckin fell off as stated already, but I always think back to all the good matches that were had Survivor Series style

screech 08-10-2013 07:07 PM

I think Money in the Bank has taken its spot in the big four.

I don't mind that at all, as I love the MITB event, but I do miss the traditional survivor series matches.

Mooияakeя™ 08-10-2013 08:21 PM

Should fucking do War Games instead.

Such an epic concept and something that would bring a great change to the years programming.

parkmania 08-10-2013 09:34 PM

The fact that Vince almost did away with the name "Survivor Series" one or two years ago should say it all.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-10-2013 10:04 PM

Not really. That's what WWE thinks of it. Not us. Survivor Series can be great when it's done right and not just another PPV. All of the gimmick PPVs have ruined the special gimmick ones except for The Royal Rumble because they haven't fucked with it that much over the years.

I think they really need to think about putting it back on Thanksgiving (or the cooking day before) and maybe lower the cost a bit to be a bit more about a family get together.

Curd 08-10-2013 11:11 PM

Agreed with the majority here. The Series used to be relevant but had diminished in importance much how former WWE Champ Bob Backlund floundered about in the mid 90s.

Curd 08-10-2013 11:13 PM

So yeah, Survivor Series is the Bob Backlund of PPVs!

Rank:
  1. Mania
  2. Rumble
  3. SummerSlam
  4. Elimination Chamber
  5. MITB
  6. Extreme Rules
  7. Survivor Series
  8. The Rest

Savio 08-11-2013 12:00 AM

They tried to ressurect it with the Rock/Cena Tag Team match.

On Thanksgiving? That was great back in the 80's, before the WWF actually went worldwide. In 2013, international buyrate is important to them, as is the fact that the NFL now plays a game during primetime on Thanksgiving.

With Thanksgiving being "just another Thursday" to the rest of the world, it's not going to matter how much you lower the cost, buys will be down. Want proof? Look back to Taboo Tuesday and see how low the international take was compared to other PPVs of the time.

glanville6 08-11-2013 10:46 AM

The name still means something to me, but realistically, it isn't the same. They can fix that whenever they want.

Bad News Gertner 08-11-2013 11:09 AM

Only in name.

MITB has taken SS place.

Volare 08-11-2013 12:18 PM

I will always consider it part of the big four due to history. But it's a sad state where there aren't that many story lines where you can't even get two traditional matches of 5 v 5 cause it would just be random fucks thrown together with no real purpose.

It used to be Captain had a problem with the other captain and probably had history with most of the heel's teammates. The face team would also be entangled in fueds with the heel team as well (Champs vs future/recent opponents for a title (Tag,IC) etc etc.

No way in hell we'll ever see that again.

Scott The Damager 08-11-2013 01:52 PM

Not anymore. It's still technically in the Big Four, but it hasn't felt that big for a while now. I agree with most of the people in this thread that MITB is the replacement in the B4 for SS.
