Serious answer; loved the Artist Formerly Known as Goldust incarnation of the character. It was so bizarre and just "out there." Then again, probably wouldn't fly in the current climate of material that the company is pushing.

i couldn't disagree with this more. goldust's debut character was brilliant. comic book supervillain-like. a master manipulator under a flashy pompous costume. the "artist formerly known" stuff took away all of that underlying credibility. he became a total joke. his antics had no subversion, they were just (as you say) "bizarre and out there." being grotesque just for the sake of being grotesque is boring to me.
that being said, you're probably right. most people only saw the freak quality to his characters, and the latter incarnation was more freakish.
i never really followed the black reign thing. but it seems to be an outwardly dark and demented character. not bad, but doesn't compare to the genius dichotomy of goldust.
do you guys get it yet? i really like goldust.
