The 3 Steam Announcements (HALF-LIFE 3?!?!?!)

No, not HL3. Of course not you fucking mongoloid. But the first of the three announcements have gone up and it's SteamOS.

Love that so far. Streaming to the living room will be a god-send for me, almost jumped in on an NVidia Shield for that purpose. Once I see some minimum specs to stream a 720p feed to the living room, I will probably build myself one.

I'm assuming the other 2 will be the controller and a pre-built box itself. But pretty fun times regardless.

What we have previously called the Steam Box should now be called Steam Machines, according to Valve. The company’s second announcement (of three) this week concerns the hardware its been working on internally, in addition to partnering with manufacturers ...

These machines are not finished, and Valve is looking for help. It’s looking for 300 people to test its “high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming.” It is not a locked box, though, and can be upgraded.

In order to become part of the 300 golden ticket winners, there is a “hardware beta eligibility quest,” to be complete, the details of which Valve has outlined on its website.

The machine Valve sends to its testers are not the only machines that will be available in 2014, and it won’t change anything about the gaming PC you may or may not have right now. There is something very specific about this machine, though, a machine we don’t have specs for yet ...

Valve may have tipped its hand regarding the final announcement, too.

“Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too," said the company. "Stay tuned, though--we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input."

Yeah, just read the terms and conditions of the machines, it says that the controller comes with the machines as part of the testing. Third announcement will be the controller...

This had me scratching my head until I saw the actual terms.

Dunno man

Kane Knight 09-27-2013 02:45 PM

It's a monstrosity!

Fighting games aren't playing on that, as well as most conventional sports sim titles.

However, most FPS games can be retrofit to it using the touch pad, as most 'active' shooting game action buttons are on the controller and whatever else can use the touchscreen. Also, personally, they found the sweet-spot in screen-on-controller size. I imagine MMOs and RTS games can work after similar bindings and custom settings like MMOs and RTS games.

The thing with touch pads is the texture wear and tear, but hopefully it would degrade about as much as a stick. Maybe less so. Bold move, though.

Hope it works out for owners. This is probably the nicest I've ever been commenting on things like this, since it is ugly and nonsensically (pompously?) ignores certain standards for no reason I can see. But hey, Steam members got a console. It's already better than Ouya.

Not not only looks ugly, but ridiculously awkward. For everything except maybe the touch pads, that is.

I'd actually like to try one and see how it works, how it feels, etc. But I'm certain;y not creaming my pants.

...I'm creaming Hasney's pants.

BAAAAAAAH WUT NO HL3!?!?!?>#@!#!~~11!1

#BROKEN Hasney 12-12-2013 04:05 AM

SteamOS is coming out tomorrow.

If streaming is in, I'll have a play. Otherwise I'm not going to bother with the hassle for now. They are advertising it as a beta.
