When has nerd rage been justified?
Been thinking about this for a few weeks. How often has outrage due to actor or style choice for a film been proven to at least be partly correct?
I seem to recall people grumbling about Spider-Man 3 and the guy from That 70s Show being cast as Venom. Was there outrage at Ben Affleck being Daredevil or Nicholas Cage being Ghost Rider? I don't want to limit this to just movies, I'm sure video-games have a ton of instances where nerd-rage, if properly respected would have led production companies from disastrous choices. Go. |
Almost never, in fact they miss the mark so often it's a wonder people still jump the gun over news and rumors.

There goes that cracked.com article I was going to write.

Spiderman 3 was ruined by Topher Grace. Horrible example. It was justifiable anger. It might be the only time they didn't over-react. They probably could have been allowed to be angrier.
|
In fairness Tobey McGuire's song and dance routine wasn't exactly a high point in the franchise either.
|
never really cared too much about most things that would maybe "attract" such a thing but I was a bit "oh that's unfortunate" about the Max Payne film, it was the one thing I really wanted to see adapted for a long time

Star Wars Prequels/remasters? I don't hate the really stupid changes now, I like to think of them as a monument to malicious stupidity.

Nerd rage is hilarious.

I stopped jumping to conclusions after Heath Ledger played the Joker.

DBE is a case where we all saw ugly coming, much like DmC, but for the most part there's been more lessons on holding off judgement than not.

Isn't that the whole point of this thread?

Any nerd rage over the Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III was totally justified.
|
The thing is, I don't recall any nerd rage prior to the films. I was younger and the internet was quieter back then admittedly.
How many times did the "nerds" scream out warnings that turned out legitimate? I can think of plenty of instances where they were just wrong or being jerks for no reason, but not too many times where they either saved the day or turned out to be right. |
People were fairly hype during the Star Wars prequel releases before the bashing began after the fact. I think DttS is focusing on nerd rage to turned out to hold true. And I'm sure it has happened, but not nearly enough to validate 'default nerd rage'. Every sci-fi/fantasy/comic movie news, from directing to writing, is met with venom first and foremost. Raging is the thing to do right off the bat, and it's almost always proved wrong after the fact. The Heath Ledger example is the best and most clear case of this.

Really? I mean, did you hear people actually complaining about that beforehand?
Kal gets what I'm saying perfectly. I even agree with his assessment that nerd rage by and by is almost wholly unjustified. To qualify as a moment when nerd rage was completely justified you first need a beloved franchise like Avengers, Superman, Spiderman etc. and then the nerds must rage against a specific idea in the film or video-game that totally ends up ruining the whole project. I did just think of one example that could have been a good thing brought on by nerd rage and that was the anger expressed toward Michael Bay for announcing he was turning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into aliens. Nerd rage led to drastic revision of his initial plan and I would like to count that as a partial victory. A total victory would have Michael Bay not directing or producing a TMNT movie, but if Nerds can't get Ben Affleck off of the upcoming Superman film I doubt they have enough power to unseat a director. |
Actually I did, Swiss. Of course, that was when I owned a comic book store.

Because that's what good movies are made of.

Corny, but at least it looked like he was actually trying to score points.

Looking forward to Escape from Detroit.

I'm not sure if Catwoman, Fantastic Four or Ghost Rider is the worst superhero film.
Definitely has to be between those three though. |
Hated Daredevil, Elektra and couldn't get passed the Green Lantern trailer.

Yeah, DareDevil and Green Lantern are bad too.

Nerd rage is not so much hilarious as it is stupid to me.

I decided to disregard the Matrix sequels because the first film works best as a stand-alone film. |
