:( Mackem :(

Poor Sunderland Palace are sh</>it but at least McCarthy won't be in the Premiership next season so I'm thankfull for that..

The Mackem 05-17-2004 09:16 PM

:'(

Dazz 05-17-2004 09:28 PM

Play offs are a harsh way for the team who finishes third to not get promoted.

Ogen 05-17-2004 09:32 PM

I like the playoffs they need tweaking though. Have 3rd in the final automatically. Then have 4th play 7th in a one legged game at 4th's ground and 5th play 6th at 5th grounds. The winners playing each other at the highest placed teams ground before playing 3rd at thirds ground. Gives an advantage to those who finish higher but does miss out on the showcase game at Cardiff

Jonster 05-17-2004 09:34 PM

For a quick example:
I think the top 3 teams in division 1, and the bottom 3 teams in the premiership should have a mini-league at the end of the season, with the top 3 teams in that league staying up.

I've always thought it unfair that teams could get relegated, and a worse team take their place, and that way could sort it.

However, it could create problems in the fact that the teams that are facing relegation would have better teams due to better funding.

I dunno, thoughts?

Dazz 05-17-2004 09:36 PM

Nah I think that 6th should play 5th in a one legged game, then the winner of that plays 4th in a one legged ga,e and the winner of that plays 3rd.

The Mask 05-18-2004 02:59 AM

nah, then you'd have the lower up teams playing up to 3 games extra, and at the end of the season that's gonna kill someone.

Wengerland 05-18-2004 07:59 AM

Playoffs are ok as they are, third gets an advantage,on paper,of playing a club 3 places below them. Also they've said its an advantage to those who finish 3rd and 4th to play the home legs second but i'm not too sure. They use that system kinda like what Ogen said in Rugby but its to determine the champions,1st goes into the final and then 2nd and 3rd play each other to get there, but thats not right to determine champions really.

Out of all the playoff teams i'd rather have seen Sunderland go up cause i'd have prefered not playing them next season.:(

Disturbed316 05-18-2004 08:04 AM

I like the play offs as they are at the moment, as long as Brighton dont go out on penalties I will continue to like the way they are.

The Mackem 05-18-2004 08:10 AM

Damn no away goals rule

Disturbed316 05-18-2004 08:14 AM

When I saw the 4-4 score I thought 'huh? shouldn't Sunderland go through?'

Now I know :'(

The Mackem 05-18-2004 08:15 AM

They just changed it for this season as well, cruel fate :(

Wengerland 05-18-2004 08:15 AM

Yeah i asked RBF when he said it was extra time whether they came in if there weren't any more goals.:(

I mean if they're used for everything else then they should be used here.

NoJabbaNoBogRoll 05-18-2004 08:33 AM

What happened? Did Sunderland get the arse or something? Inform me :'(

The Mackem 05-18-2004 09:29 AM

Play-offs

We lost 3-2 away, which was slightly unfortunate in the first place

Then we won 2-1 last night (they scored in the dying minutes of the first 90). Then we losst on penalties. :(

toxic rooster 05-18-2004 09:54 AM

Chin up son, at least you'll get more than 19 points next season.

Sin Harvest 05-18-2004 11:47 AM

Chin up Mackem, my fellow Sunderland fan and, err, mackem. Remember what happened when we lost out on penalties in the play off's? Aye, WE SLAUGHTERED EVERY TEAM WE PLAYED! And more importantly, won the league plus promotion to the Premiership. Don't think we'll manage that again, but if history repeated itself last night (4-4 agg. draw, lose out on penalties to Crystal Palace. 4-4 draw, lose out on penalties to Charlton Athetic back in 1998), why can't we win it next season?

Mick needs to buy sharper strikers for next season, Smith, Byfield and Stewart aren't the answer. And if we have to go through the play-offs again, TEACH THEM HOW TO TAKE PENALTIES!

Respect for ya really bro.

Oxstar 05-18-2004 10:43 PM

Ok i admit it crystal palace absoulutly fluked it against sunderland,i went to the first leg is was a great game, but now were only 90 minutes away from another season of division 1 or been the premier league whiping boys. Football as ups and downs and been a palace fan i know all about it.

Tony Montana 05-19-2004 04:19 AM

I just watched the highlights of that match, pretty "dramatic" ending to say the least.

The Mackem 05-19-2004 05:02 AM

I almost died. Football, it's a funny old game.

i was so hyper, i dont know if im going to go to cardiff or not, bit expensive and a bit of a mission

Team Sheep 05-19-2004 01:40 PM

I'd like to see Palace in the Premiership next season. It will make a good change to have a team that's not so big in the big time. Let the hammers suffer for another year :)

Rob Ban Fan 05-19-2004 06:28 PM

Simon Jordan is a dick.

But i hope Palace go up over West Ham.

Wengerland 05-19-2004 06:44 PM

I'd prefer Palace to go up,but they need to protect the pitch better.Selhurst Park is made harder to play at because of the often poor state of the ground.

We'll win the league next year. I'm hoping Palace go up, so I can point and LAUGH at West Ham. I'm gutted Hartlepool United went out last night too :( Would have loved to play them next season.

toxic rooster 05-20-2004 06:44 AM

I don't think it really matters, because whoever wins out of West Ham and Palace are going straight back down

Wengerland 05-20-2004 09:41 AM

I'm not sure if Palace might surprise a few people,i think the chairman is fairly wealthy so would give Dowie about £5 million or maybe more and if its spent wisely, and seeing how Dowie has done such a good job motivating the same players who were in relegation trouble to get to the play off final, they could have a chance.

I think Pardew has been shown up slightly as being overrated, they had Defoe for half the season, then signed one of the leading scorers at that time,Harewood, aswell as guys like Reo-Coker and McAnuff who were linked with Portsmouth pre season and are definetly good players so,in my view, they should have got automatic promotion without too much trouble.

Rob Ban Fan 05-20-2004 06:17 PM

yeah I agree about Pardew.

For half of the season they had one of England's best young strikers and England's #1 goalkeeper in their team along with Carrick, Conolly etc. They under achieved definatly.

But if they went up, I reckon they can definatly stay up. They've got the kind of reputation as a club that can attract decent players, plus they'd have some money to spend.

Disturbed316 05-20-2004 07:24 PM

BRIGHTON!!!!!!!!!

SEAGULLS! SEAGULLS! SEAGULLS!

Cardiff, here I come!

Adam Virgo scored in the 120th minute to equalise

won 4-3 on penalties :|

Ricky 05-20-2004 07:36 PM

Shame you're not going up.

Disturbed316 05-20-2004 07:45 PM

Yeah, but it will still be a nice day out

Ricky 05-21-2004 08:35 AM

We did the "nice day out" thing last year. We mean serious business now.
