Rusev and Rhyno Disease.
After having watched the segment with Swagger and his Armdrags of Freedom, I noticed something that was kind of obvious.
Swagger TOWERS over Rusev. I mentioned it to a friend, who said "to be fair, Swagger is about 6'7"." That observation leads me to another realization. Rusev has Rhyno Disease. Rhyno Disease was something I first started noticing when Rhyno made his WWF/E debut. When he was Rhino in ECW he looked like a huge monster. Then, compared to many of the cast of characters in WWF/E, you realize that Rhyno really wasn't that big. I think that kind of helped to hamper his run (in addition to a poorly timed neck injury). Rusev, while built like a brick wall, really isn't that tall. And this is going to be a huge detriment to him as a monster going forward. Especially considering potential marquis match-ups. He's going to be looking up at guys he's supposed to be a bruiser compared to. Kind of takes away from the monster aura. Discuss. Or don't. |
Rusev's not very tall, no, but he's wide and bulky, and that goes a long way. It's all really a matter of how they book him, and how well he sells it. Look at Taz in ECW, for example-- the guy was tiny, but they booked him as an absolute killer, and he acted like one, suplexing people to death and choking them out. Granted, WWE jobbed him out and he became a lovably inept color commentator, but there was a time when Taz could get in the ring with pretty much anybody and people would buy that he could just maul them.
So, physique is important, yes, but not as important as presentation and physicality. |
Yeah, Rusev has the advantage that he is very wide. Looks like a tank.
Rhyno was not built as impressively as Rusev. |
|
Boots would probably help.

But yea, I agree. It's all gonna be in the presentation with him. I feel like he will end up going the way of Ryback though, considering this is WWE. When Jack Swagger gets the upper hand on you nowadays, if only for a fleeting moment, then your future isn't looking to bright. |
Now all I can think of is Taz and how much they wasted him.
He had that really bad neck injury, but I wonder if it was really impossible to come back from, or if he decided it wasn't worth it given how bad they were using him. |
The problem with these guys is that theyre too generic and not believable as athletes. They are more like bodybuilders. For example, either of the Cassatt brothers is more believable because they are not just big but also athletic.
Just my two 02 cents. |
Hes not really billed as a tall guy and thats not his style. His whole thing is that hes built like a brick shithouse and for a 300+ pound wrecking ball he is super athletic.
|
Rhyno disease was that he wasnt that good in the ring, and wasnt even as big as Rusev and had no character or gimmick and was misused.
They arent related |
Rhyno was billed at 5'10 275 which means he was 5'8 250 tops.
Rusev has a legit 4 inches and 50 pounds on Rhyno. |
So, do you think Cazzam Cassatt falls into the Rhyno category or the Rusev category?
|
As soon as I saw Rusev on TV I had two thoughts:
1. He's not tall and won't match up against the big main event players. 2. He's going to either break his foot or rip his toe nails off by accident because he doesn't wear boots. |

He's small if you compare him to Swagger or Big Show but his style as a "big man" is a lot closer to Henry and Ryback.
Big Show is almost a foot taller than Henry but a large chunk of the audience would still believe Henry as the "bigger" beast of the two because of his established strength. |
