No Man's Sky
For all you sci fi trekie motherfos out there! Sounds pretty decent.
http://www.no-mans-sky.com No Man’s Sky is a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated universe. A TRULY OPEN UNIVERSE Whether a distant mountain or a planet hanging low on the horizon, you can go there. You can fly seamlessly from the surface of a planet to another, and every star in the sky is a sun that you can visit. Where you’ll go and how fast you’ll make your way through this universe is up to you. It’s yours for the taking. EXPLORATION IS SEEING THINGS NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN BEFORE Explore uncharted solar systems and catalogue unique new forms of life. Every planet’s landscape is different from the next, and populated by species never before encountered. Find ancient artefacts that could reveal the secrets behind the universe. Choose whether to share your discoveries with other players. They’re exploring the same vast universe in parallel; perhaps you’ll make your mark on their worlds as well as your own. |
This game is tempting me to buy a PS4.
That said, it's insanely ambitious. I could only see it really working if they are consistently patching in new enviornments, textures and wildlife. Because otherwise at some point you'll see everything there is too see, and even though the universe is infinite, it will just be rearrangments of the same stuff. |
Thought this had a thread or something.
Anyway something I've discussed at Kotaku was the 'non-game' nature of this, which seems a part of the 'interactive experience non-game' thing going around along with Gone Home and the flower breeze thing on Playstation. Can't say I'm a fan but I find its rise very curious. |
I know right and I doubt it'll make it's way to it's little bro ps3..

Yeah, it's randomly generating, but I assume it's randomly generating on a simple level. Like I doubt it's actually constructing new 3d models for new wildlife by itself. Or creating new textures. A developer has to at least do that much.
If I'm wrong then holy shit this is how skynet takes over. |
One thing i'd like to see, more interactions with creatures and people.
You wanna kill them, you mean? Because it seems there's interactions in any case. You do meet people and you do see and scare animals. What other interactions would you like to see?
Sorry, kinda meant to see more demos of interactions.
I wonder how they will make the meta-game challenging enough.
Being a non-game you don't have to worry about that.
Yes, No Mans Sky is a non-game.

Fuck "non-game", and all the other silly little phrases the gaming community makes up.
Also think it is silly to place labels on a game we know very VERY little about at this point. Just because the universe itself is infinite doesn't mean that there is no endgame or objectives. |
Actually I say that because there is literally no endgame or objectives revealed as of now. So I would call that a non-game, like Gone Home. Not knocking it, just calling it how I see it. It's an interactive experience and that's fine. No need for fury.
It's had two big showings and nothing was revealed about anything other than exploration. Just saying.
It has shown guns and space combat, did you miss that bit? (Asking seriously, not facetiously).
I seen it. You have random encounters against aliens. You can 'die' if you don't fight back, I suppose. Their involvement isn't fully revealed.
I seen every vid there is to see. |
And with the story culminating, but not ending, at the center of the universe, still fail how this is a "non game". It is more of a game than the Walking Dead or Wolf Among Us interactive stories.
You're right. And they're great stories. See, I don't mind that Walking Dead isn't strictly a 'game'. It's awesome as is.
I appreciate your passion, but calling a video game a non-game is ridiculous. It comes off almost snobby.
Why? There are games and nowadays there are interactive experiences that aren't games per se. I'm not writing all that so I'll just say 'non-game'. What's so snobby about calling a card a card?
God I hope this comes to xb1 at some point
The "experience" is the game. It's just pointless labeling.
Not pointless. And no other entertainment genre would play that loose with terms. Like looking at a motion painting that changes scenes every minute and saying, "it's still a movie". That wouldn't fly.
What is the offensive thing I'm saying here? |
"No Man’s Sky is a game" taken from their website. There it's settled. ;)
Anyway according to the video, i'd love to walk around a new planet and jump into my ship and on to the next one...but then knowing me, i'll get bored with it very quickly. |
