Has the WWE ever fired a reigning champion or a main event player?
Has the WWE ever fired a reigning champion or a main event player in a top level feud?
|
I know Dbry wasn't exactly a main eventer at the time...at least in WWE but he was involved in a main event angle.
|
Can't recall but from Jericho's second book, it sounded like they're were thinking of firing him during his IC Champ reign.
|
Ulimate Warrior was pretty close. As close as it gets.
|
Warrior is the highest I can think of. Slaughter was pretty high on the food chain when he got canned in 84.
They 86'd Chyna in 2001 when she was Women's Champion... |

Though she quit now that I think of it

What about Madusa "dropping" the title on Nitro? Was she fired or quit?
|
probably quit but just guessing
Ken Kennedys release I always thought was comical |

Kurt Angle, maybe? It seemed he was set to become the new face of the WWECW when they canned him (debateable whether that would really be main event stuff)
|
RVD is the answer to this question.
|
No, they suspended him.

Angle was fired, he claimed an early release to try and save face, but he was definitely fired.
Slaughter was definitely fired as well, for no showing a date, trying to cut his own deal for G.I. Joe, and trying to start a union. |
Was Jeff Hardy fired after dropping the title to CM Punk, or was that just Jeff wanting to leave again?

I think they wanted Angle to take some time off to heal, but instead he asked for his release because he didn't want to stop rassling to rest.
|
They wanted Angle to go to rehab, he said no, they were afraid he was going to die on their watch, and they fired him. History has been very kind to the story of Angle's release, but despite his best efforts to frame it as mutual or as his idea, that wasn't the case at all.
