Tool.
I haven't heard a song by this band that I liked. A lot of people, some being black metal people, tell me that I've only heard their mainstream shit or something. Does Tool have anything I should care about? I remember downloading some shit by them a few times, and I never liked them. Is there some hidden gem of an album that I should be aware of?
|
It doesn't sound like metal really. They are one of my favourite bands, but if you say you've already heard them there isn't much I can do to change your opinion on them.
|
I know they're not metal. Everyone tells me how talented they are and how great they are at songwriting. Every song I've heard by them is pretty simple songwriting and unimpressive musicianship. Do they have any songs with awesome structure, technicality, or just something that's better than their mainstream hits?

Parabola. Lateralus. Schism. I think all those are unique and good. I like their newer stuff rather than their older. Although "Forty Six and Two" is probably my favorite.
|
Hard to please a metal elitist, so no need to waste your time with Tool. Stick with what you like.
|
What have you heard?
|
Anyway, just try one song for now.
No Quarter. I dunno exactly what you are looking for and you arent on so I will check back later. I also have all their albums in mp3 form so if you just wanna hear for yourself, I can hook you up. |
Stinkfist is possibly the best song ever in the history of songs (and I'm including Iron Maiden and COB)

Try Stinkfist, Prison Sex, Lateralus, 46 and 2, Schism, Parabola and The Grudge.
Tool (l) |
No Quarter is pretty good. I've heard Prison Sex, Schism, and the like. No Quarter is the best song I've heard by them thus far.
|
Third Eye
Ticks and Leeches The Patient Cold and Ugly Opiate Eulogy H. Hooker With A Penis In addition to the ones Jason Cage listed. |
I dunno if 'Sober' is one their more known songs but also give that one a shot.
|
try to get parabol/parabola as one song if you can, as it's infinitely more awesome that way.
I like tool but I find most of the guitar work pretty unimaginative compared to what's going on behind it. |
Hot bass break in Parabola. Decent shit.
|
The Grudge. |

I've heard Lateralus. It's an alright song. Parabol/Parabola and No Quarter are good, though.

THE GRUDGE. |
the grudge is awesome for it's half minute scream or however long it is, and the crazy bit with the bass drum doubling up over and over
|
The Melvins are much better than Tool, IMO. Tool has some good songs, but I see the Melvins as more influential in the greater scale, especially in revitalizing Doom Metal, helping to be the cornerstones in influence both New Orleans' Sludge (Jimmy Bower referred to Gluey Porch Treatments as "His ****in' Bible.") and Seattle's Grunge scenes (Soundgarden and Nirvana, duh.). There's also some Melvins influence in Tool (most blatant: the opening bass line in "H.").
Then again, what do I know? |
Tool do concede they're heavily influenced by them though...
|
Tool is not metal, yeah it has the influences in some areas, but it's much more an artsy type of hard rock if that makes sense...I personally love Tool, and they're one of my favorite bands, and put on one hell of a stage show when in concert.
Good songs: Third Eye Eulogy 46&2 Parabol/Parabola The Grudge Ticks and Leeches Schism Push It |
They don't play "Ticks and Leeches" live, IIRC, because the recording of it messed up Maynard's voice.
|
my bad for bringin' up old threads but...if you want a good tool cd then try opiate. it really keeps to what they were known for before aenima came out...btw asphyXy if your into religion then you're prolly not gonna like them but they do have pretty decient songs on opiate. so give it a try
|
