Talking Point of the Week: Milestones in Wrestling

TLP Talking Point of the Week:

On Wednesday we're recording episode 100 of TLP, so we're going to be discussing milestones in wrestling. Promotions sometimes make a big deal about certain milestones, such as how long something has been happening, or how many times something has happened.

Are all of these milestones significant, and are some more significant than others? For instance, is the length of someone's title reign nore important than the number of his title reigns? Was it good to advertise Wrestlemania 30 as the "30th anniversary of Wrestlemania", even though it was the 29th anniversary? Do we need a "special" episode of Raw or Smackdown each time one of them has an episode number that's a multiple of 100?

If it gives them a reason to do some one-off cool stuff they normally don't/wouldn't do, I'm all for it. As long as they don't keep calling the same "Legends" in for said shows, that is.

First of all, congrats on getting to 100.

As for milestones I think it's a case by case thing. Major anniversaries or things like the 1000th episode of Raw are major achievements and should be celebrated accordingly, but things like 'season premiere' don't mean jack shit.

In some ways they underplay milestones in their own kayfabe world. Stats get over if there is an impressive context, just look at Goldberg and Taker. If they use the right type of milestone for the right guy it can mean the world (Cena going for World Title 16 is a naturally interesting premise regardless of which side of the Cena fence you sit on).

The problem as always is with misusing milestones, using them as a crutch for guys or events nobody cares about in an attempt to get them over. I remember Michael Cole mentioning how at Mania 28 when Big Show won the IC title it was landmark in that he had now won every title in the company he was eligible for, and with it being Big Show it meant nothing.

You should get TD to get Jericho on the podcast, for your 100TH EPISODE SPECIALE!

You should have a few guests on that have contributed a lot to the show from TPWW

The Special episodes are usually a week before a PPV. It's the only time they actually try to do a legit "Go Home Show" anymore.

A true milestone for TLP is every time Poit actually reads my responses to the threads.

BTW, congrats to all on the 100th anniversary of the first TLP

Congrats on 100 episodes TLP crew.

Celebrating milestones are great for having something different than the usual stuff happen in shows. RAW celebrating its 20th anniversary gave the WWE an excuse to do something different for that episode while stuff like the yearly Royal Rumble stats reminder always gives them an option for creating new records.

If were talking about milestones got to mention the greatest milestone of all, Axle lasting 3 months in the Royal Rumble.

You know it's gonna be Hulk Hogan for every multiple of 50, brother.

Milestones are good. Make a RAW feel at least slightly different.

If anything, they need MORE Raw special shows....

Right now they have "Old School RAW" and "The Slammy Award" editions.... and those two always at least feel "good" because they are "different".

Should really bring back King of the Ring as a special RAW event....

Bring back Raw Roulette and HLA too.

They didn't do an Old School Raw last year did they? Disappointing.
