Super Mario Maker

Why isn't there a Super Mario Maker thread?

The amiibo is weird. One of them will be sold separately and the other will only be available with the Limited Edition. No idea which is which.

The game comes with a hardback book with levels and artwork inside. Levels in the book have a key symbol underneath them with four numbers. I'm assuming you can input those four numbers into a search bar to find them faster than scrolling through the premade levels.

You can only upload ten levels but, if those ten are well recieved by the community, you are given additional upload spots. If those do well, you get even more upload spots.

You can download and edit other peoples levels but you can't reupload them.

There are at least 90 costumes to unlock/access via amiibo. Link, Marth, Kirby etc.

The costumes are only available in the original Super Mario Bros style.

It's single player.

You can leave notes in levels, Dark Souls/Bloodborn style. You can turn these off.

You can see where other players died by a red X marking the spot. You can turn that off too.

The difficulty rating for stages isn't selected by the creator or players. It's calculated based on how many of the people that play your level actually finish it.

You can only upload levels you make if you beat them yourself.

They still have stuff to reveal about the game and they'll do it over the Summer.

Fignuts 06-23-2015 07:41 PM

So hyped for this game. Probably going to buy amiibos now.

Fignuts 06-23-2015 07:46 PM

This, Mad Max, Phantom Pain, Mighty No.9, and Fifa 16 all coming in September. Gonna be a busy fucking month for me.

Fignuts 06-23-2015 07:49 PM

Does that book come with the regular release? I saw it in the interview with Miyamoto at e3 but I thought it was for a limited edition or something.

Drakul 06-23-2015 07:53 PM

Every version, standard and Limited Edition, comes with it.

Fignuts 06-23-2015 07:56 PM

Excited, but also super gutted as I thought this was pretty much done and coming out in July or something.

Drakul 06-23-2015 07:58 PM

A question for anyone that played Mario paint. In every trailer for SMM, there is a frog face below the level theme selection on the left of the screen (0:15 in the trailer in the original post). It was not available in the version people played in streams, at E3 etc. Is it from Mario Paint?

Animal Crossing and WarioWare DIY both used frogs to relate to music so I think that's maybe some kind of music selection or editor.
It might have been tadpoles in WarioWare.

drave 06-24-2015 05:47 AM

Dunno about a frog..... This was my sole reason for playing mario paint

road doggy dogg 06-24-2015 09:56 AM

hey now.. music maker was super rad too

Drakul 06-24-2015 10:15 AM

That minigame was in WarioWare Touched.

If anyone missed the NWC, the final shows off SMM.

I'm excited for this. Could potentially be the most difficult platformer ever devised from the minds of a bunch of autistic kids.

Drakul 06-24-2015 10:39 AM

I hope not everyone makes rock hard levels and stuff. I'd rather play a creative, clever level than one that was insanely difficult.

road doggy dogg 06-24-2015 10:41 AM

I'm sure there'll be different tiers or categories or something... I'm picturing something along the lines of LittleBigPlanet

Drakul 06-24-2015 10:51 AM

You can search by difficulty.

The Rogerer 06-24-2015 11:01 AM

I think this will be much, much better than Little Big Planet for most people. I found LBP awkward to use, and that's coming from someone who spent a lot of time with Duke Nukem 3D BUILD and the Half-Life one. Never mind that LBP played like trash, and this will be wonderful.

Maybe it'll surprise us, but I think this will be the big hurrah of the Wii U. We're actually getting spoiled for choice this year, I'm trying to be selective about what I play and have time for, and I think this is top of my Wii U list. Xenoblade Chronicles X seems to be mediocre and Starfox really looked uninspired.

Drakul 06-24-2015 11:09 AM

I felt the same about LBP but everyone ignored me because I'm so in to Nintendo that any negative comments about Playstation stuff must automatically be my fan bias.

Xenoblade looks ok but it's looked barren from what I've seen. Deserted city and deserted countryside with one or two giant enemies.

I'm disappointed Star Fox Zero is ANOTHER reboot. Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars was a reboot of the SNES original and now this is another one.
I'm hoping, if they're just remaking 64, that it wont end when 64 ends and have a whole new campaign after this first with new missions etc. Also, stop with the sucky motion controls.

road doggy dogg 06-24-2015 11:20 AM

LBP is the best shutup shutup shutuppppppp

Drakul 06-24-2015 11:24 AM

The Mario Kart rip-off was pretty dull too.

The Rogerer 06-24-2015 11:33 AM

Splatoon convinced me with motion controls, but it seems like an awful idea from what I've seen/heard in Starfox.

LittleBigPlanet was the wishywashiest game I'm afraid. I wanted to believe but you'd have to go back to some awful SNES game or Crash Bandicoot 1 to find worse platforming.

Xenoblade seems to match up with this modern JRPG trend of fighting massive monsters on wide flat plains of shrubland.

Drakul 06-24-2015 11:41 AM

I turn off motion controls asap. They killed Skyward Sword for me. I have never abandoned a Zelda game before that. Motion controls can be fun but only occasionally, Wario Land: The Shake Dimension being a good example.

I think Crash 1 was good. I was playing a friends PS4, some LotR game where enemies rank up if they kill you etc, pretty unimpressed. He boots up Crash 1 and I had a lot of fun with it despite not seeing it for, like, 20 years.

road doggy dogg 06-24-2015 11:46 AM

Splatoon's motion controls are fantastic

Drakul 06-24-2015 11:53 AM

A few people have said that but I'd probably never try them.

road doggy dogg 06-24-2015 11:58 AM

I dunno, worth a shot. I utterly detested the motion controls in Mario Kart (the wheel), but felt perfectly comfortable using them in Splatoon. Of course, they do have their downside, trying to get a few games in while laying on the couch etc...

The Rogerer 06-24-2015 12:15 PM

Splatoon motion controls are alright, but probably still a bit confusing. I enjoy them as the novelty of the game. It's the only time I've put up with them. Zelda was horrible. I only finished Twilight Princess because I had the gamecube version.

I started playing Crash 1 a year ago to see what it was like. I got to a notoriously hard level near the end. That game is really just hard agony. I remember back in the day thinking that the future of 3D platforming was going to be bleak. After coming off Super Mario World, we now had stuff like Crash and Mario 64 where you wobbled about. Admittedly there's a gulf between the two, but I remember getting my hands on Super Mario 64 for the first time and going "This will never catch on, people will just want 2d games"

Kalyx triaD 06-24-2015 11:52 PM

You can turn off Splatoon's motion controls. First thing I did when the option came.

Drakul 06-25-2015 02:09 AM

Same here.

The Rogerer 06-25-2015 02:48 AM

They're suprisingly useful for quick vertical aiming, once you get the hang of them. I notice if I need to quickly paint a wall I want to squid up,

Kalyx triaD 06-25-2015 02:53 AM

I'm an all in or nothing guy when it comes to motion controls. Motion for verticals and stick for horizontal is weird.

The Rogerer 06-25-2015 02:59 AM

For me it's the best of both worlds. X movement has to go full 360, Y movement only has to go on a limited arc. It's unique to splatoon because you have to use the Y axis in ways you normally wouldn't.

Drakul 06-25-2015 03:58 AM

There's a Mario Maker gamepad accessory set on Amazon.

Quote:

• Officially licensed by Nintendo
• Mario Maker designed Protector and Stylus for Wii U
• Protective casing made from durable polycarbonate
• Top and bottom covers to protect GamePad from dirt and scratches
• Leaves access to all ports, buttons and camera lens while protector is attached
• Large stylus for added grip and comfort
No images yet but I guess it'll be yellow with retro sprites.

Emperor Smeat 06-25-2015 06:01 PM

100 levels are included with the game at the start. Meant to cater more to people who don't want to bother making levels or deal with its online aspects.

road doggy dogg 06-25-2015 06:07 PM

If you don't want to bother making levels or "deal" with the online aspect..... wtf are you buying a game called MARIO MAKER for

road doggy dogg 06-25-2015 06:07 PM

but nice that 100 levels are included

Fignuts 06-25-2015 08:01 PM

They'll be made of invisible blocks so, it's there, but you can't see it unless you download the level and load it in the editor.

Amiibo news!

The NES coloured 8-bit Mario amiibo is the exclusive amiibo that comes with the Limited Edition. The modern colours will be available separately.

You can unlock the amiibo skins without amiibo by playing 100 Mario Challenge and there are skins that aren't unlockable with amiibo. One is a goomba.

Drakul 06-30-2015 12:02 PM

20 minutes of Super Mario Maker (15 mins of gameplay. 5 mins of editing.)

The guy doesn't exactly show him to be a world class player but footage is footage,

If that's correct, the player has 4 of 10 medals in the upper left corner. So, 100 courses would be the maximum we could upload. That's more levels than any previous Mario game has had.
