The Syracuse "Orange"
 

I know this is kind of old news, but I just saw something else about it.

I think that is rediculous. Syracuse is the Orangemen (or Orangewomen), they should always be the Orangemen. Does anybody know, did some feminist group complain or why did they change their classic name to such a stupid name?

Those rules are so stupid, Hofstra used to be the Flying Dutchmen, how cool of a name is that? But now since the school isn't all Dutch kids, they had to change to the Pride, how lame is that?

Nike offered them a shit load of money to change the name and sell the new uni's and related merchandise.

After Carmelo went there for a year, there was a huge surge in the purchase of Syracuse gear. They were already a Nike school, but they wanted to take advantage by releasing new hats, jersies, and other apparel before the national popularity waned. They changed the logo, and Nike subsidized the new gear and ended up dumping money into the athletic program and a campaign for the school.

This is pretty common for college programs. The name change was just supposed to sound "cool," I believe. Plus, it's non gender specific, so we don't have to hear that ridiculous Lady Orangemen.
