The Worst Pay-Per-View Match Ever

So for this week's podcast we're delving into some truly awful stuff, and looking to debate the Worst Matches to ever "grace" a Pay-Per-View broadcast, and as such are looking to get your nominations for what you think should take the wooden spoon.

Simply put, what is the worst match you personally feel you've ever seen on PPV? Could be an outright four-finger stinker, or a promoted match that just fell so far short of expectations that it'd scarred your fandom forever - which do you feel is the worst, and please explain why.

As always the best contributions will be read on the show and you'll be credited accordingly. So what's your pick for this lofty honour?

EDIT - Our show debating the Worst PPV Matches Ever, featuring many of your contributions is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean....Match_Ever.mp3

Sting vs Jeff Hardy
Undertaker vs Giant Gonzalez
Great Khali vs ______________
Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus

Maluco 04-11-2016 12:57 PM

Diesel vs Mabel Summerslam 95?

When you consider the size of the event, a poor build, a terrible match, and that nothing was gained at all from having the match, it all seemed pointless.

Mabel went on to do nothing afterwards, not even a tag title win and he might as well have never won KotR (he shouldn't have anyway, but why give it to him in the first place)

Simple Fan 04-11-2016 12:58 PM

Lesnar vs Goldburg. Match could have been so much better had both not had one foot out the door. If Brock would have kept the title and not dropped it to Eddie of all people match could have been great.

The Condor 04-11-2016 01:13 PM

As for purely awful work, Stevie Richards vs. Tyson Tomko from Unforgiven 2004 should be mentioned, as well as anything with the Gang Wars in 1997.

As for much ballyhooed failures, I think Bret-Backlund at WM 11, and Yoko-UT at Royal Rumble 1994 have dogs in this fight.

Speaking of having dogs in this fight....Kennel from Hell, Unforgiven 99!

The dogs pissing and humping around the ring while JR almost apologises for the match live on air.

Only reason I would hesitate to include it is because Bossman, once again, is hilarious in the build up to his match, and this propels him to the even more hilarious Big Show feud.

drave 04-11-2016 03:01 PM

Have to go with Lesnar v Goldberg.

That match could have been amazing if either guy was willing to put the other over. Instead, we watched a 10-15 minute stalemate which turned out to be the "piss break match" of Mania.

JBL is a Wrestling GAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWD-UH ;)

Sharmell vs Jenna Morasca- TNA Victory Road 2009

Extreme Elimination Chamber- ECW December to Dismember 2006

My thoughts exactly.

I was at that wrestlemania. I remember being excited about the concept when it came about, but watching it live I couldn't help but beg for it to just be over already.

Jordan 04-11-2016 07:57 PM

Well it's cliche but it's what came to mind...

Hero's of Wrestling, Jake Roberts & Jim Neidhart vs Yokozuna & King Kong Bundy

Jordan 04-11-2016 07:58 PM

I was so excited for that PPV too... I convinced my mom to order it.... sorry mom

harmsway 04-11-2016 08:06 PM

Hhh v steiner

Frank Drebin 04-11-2016 08:17 PM

Sting/Hardy. Can you imagine if that had happened at a WWE PPV?

The others mentioned are all are all bad matches and deserve to be on the proverbial list, but we are talking about a main event where one of the performers was inebriated to the point where management had to resort to improvised verbal magic tricks in the ring, effectively canceling it mid-entrances because that's how much of a danger Hardy was to himself and those around him.

It's bad, but it's entertaining and enjoyable in the way that a Mystery Science Theater 3000 feature is.

This is still some of the most incredible shit to ever go down in modern professional wrestling, and I doubt we'll ever see anything like it again.

Savio 04-11-2016 09:09 PM

Hogan/Warrior 2.

DAMN iNATOR 04-11-2016 10:38 PM

Kane v. (Impostor) Kane was pretty awful.

Goldberg v. HHH was 10× as much "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!", IMHO.

HAHA, already quoted it for posterity. Have fun wearing your shame.

CWK 04-12-2016 10:56 AM

Short list for me, off the top of my head.

Triple H vs. Scott Steiner - Royal Rumble 2003
Undertaker and Kane vs. Kronik - Unforgiven 2001 (I think)
Hollywood Hogan vs The Warrior - Halloween Havoc 1998

Innovator 04-12-2016 11:37 AM

Sting v. Jeff Hardy, Victory Road 2011

Yeah I wanted to say that but VSG beat me to it

The Condor 04-12-2016 01:44 PM

A lot of mentions for various Unforgiven matches. Don't really recall anything great from those shows, but there were definitely some in-ring abortions, it would appear.

Bad News Gertner 04-12-2016 01:59 PM

Fall Brawl War Games 1998.

You had Stevie Ray in it (probably because nobody else would take the pin) , Warrior disappearing in a cloud of smoke, but then couldn't get out of the cage, a Renegade appearence, teams which ment nothing since it was still every man for himself). What a fucking mess.

Innovator 04-12-2016 02:01 PM

Honorable mention to Steiner vs. Nash vs. Goldberg - WILL THEY FOLLOW THE SCRIPT? match

lol, first PPV I ever watched. I remember that confusing main event, a good Raven/Saturn match, and Buff Bagwell pretending to break his neck.

Frank Drebin 04-12-2016 02:39 PM

Again, everyone's leaning to the "it wasn't entertaining" side of things. Sting/Hardy was literally an abortion of a match - on the fly, as the match was about to start. How is this not the runaway #1?

I WILL FIGHT YOU!!

Emperor Smeat 04-12-2016 04:54 PM

Without putting any real thought, toss up between Sting vs Jeff Hardy at Victory Road 2011 and Chamber of Horrors at Halloween Havoc 1991.

Anything that involved David Arquette..

SlickyTrickyDamon 04-12-2016 09:20 PM

Pretty much every match on this fucking show.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_of_Wrestling

You wanna play 21? I've got 22.

I'll go with the main event of Jim Neidhart and King Kong Bundy (with "Mini Bundy") defeated Jake Roberts and Yokozuna. Terrible.

dronepool 04-12-2016 09:30 PM

Dean Ambross vs Lesnar at WM32 sucked. Dean taunting Brock was more amusing to watch than the match.

evanbrown 04-12-2016 10:07 PM

Dean Ambrose is the kind of guy who would do well if WWE brought back the hardcore title because he's really a glorified garbage wrestler.
