Don't you hate songs that are like 10 minutes long, but nothing happens

For like 5 minutes?

I'm not talking about a song where it's like a 5 minute intro, I'm talking about like 5 minutes of a canned loop or some other bullshit thing that just wastes space before the song actually starts.,

The Destroyer 05-25-2004 02:33 PM

Yeah, songs like that tend to give long songs a bad name. It's just like pointless padding, drives me nuts.

The Mask 05-25-2004 02:34 PM

Yeah. I like long songs. These are generally short songs with a long tracklisting.

asphyXy 05-25-2004 02:38 PM

I love 40 minute songs where riffs repeat only two or three times.

"Crimson" and "Crimson II" by Edge of Sanity, for example.

Granted Iron Butterfly's In-a-gadda-da-vida Could be considered a masterpeice because of its riffs..but honestly 10+ mins is just way to long for a song.

Ben 05-26-2004 05:45 PM

Back when writing elaborate "suites" was all the rage, there were some good ones... Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Cat Stevens and Carole King all did suites that were like 15 minutes long and very listenable. They'd like take some basic ideas for songs, jus the melodies really, and instead of putting like 12 songs on a record, they'd put one big one with all the various songs combined... Kinda bizarre, but it worked for the most part...

Most of techno is only music. It makes for awesome bass tracks.

What that meant, was that it's -supposed- to be only rythm. There's not supposed to be much more. Maybe a few words here and there, but techno is about rythm and bass. It's dumb to complain that a techno song goes on for 10 minutes with only rythm, because that's what a lot of techno IS. If you don't like techno, then don't listen to it.

Fabien Barthez 05-26-2004 11:43 PM

the doors tended to do that. especially live.

el fregadero 05-27-2004 01:32 AM

And that is why The Doors are one of the most overrated bands ever.

Yep

TheNamelessOne 05-27-2004 08:15 AM

The last song on Million Deads album "A Song To Ruin" finishes off with a continuous loop.

Its really irritating.

Azriel 05-27-2004 09:52 AM

Examples KK?

Not if it's a well-done song.

This is why techno sucks.

Well, it's just that I know a whole bunch of songs that are over 10 minutes that I think are great, so I was just wondering what songs you were thinking about so I could argue/agree with you.

Kane Knight 05-27-2004 03:02 PM

Brighton Rock (Queen, live Killers version)
Several Type O songs.
1812 overture.
Do I even need to mention Pink Floyd?

Azriel 05-27-2004 03:13 PM

Yeah 1812 Overture is a bit overblown
and I guess with Pink Floyd, it depends on your musical taste. I for one love most of their longer songs (Shine On, Dogs, Echoes, Sheep, Sorrow and Pigs I'm not much of a fan of)

Kane Knight 05-27-2004 03:34 PM

overblown?

Jonster 05-27-2004 03:43 PM

A good 10 minute plus song is Cicatriz Esp by The Mars Volta.
Well I like it anyway.
However, when I saw them live they played a 32 minute version of it, and I loved every second.

What Would Kevin Do? 05-27-2004 04:18 PM

The full version of X-Japan's "Art of Life" is over 30 minutes long. Great song.

yeah, i was gonna say Type O Negative, but you beat me to it. i like Type O Negative, but a lot of their otherwise good songs (unsuccessfully coping with the natural beauty of infedelity, for example) just drag on.

i also dont particularly care for excessively long yet un-melodic guitar solos in the middle of songs(iron maiden, suicidal tendencies)

Kane Knight 05-27-2004 10:57 PM

Some of their songs drag on quite a bit, other long songs by them are simply awesome.

Maiden and unmelodic in the same post.

el fregadero 05-28-2004 12:25 AM

Iron Maiden is far from unmelodic.

KillerWolf 05-30-2004 01:19 PM

^^yes iron maiden is one of the most musically gifted bands ever, but some songs would have been better without the guitar solos, some of which are not particularly melodic

example: remember tommorro
heaven can wait
the lonliness of the long distance runner

the point is that a lot of bands have made a lot of songs that would be cooler if they didnt harp on 4 and a half minute guitar solos.

most heavy metal songs from the eighties and early nineties follow a formula: verse 1, verse 2, lead guitar solo, verse 3. the end. im not saying all solos are bad, but some are there apparently just to stick to a formula.

MVP 05-31-2004 05:56 PM

Shine on You Crazy Diamond is pretty notorious for that.

asphyXy 05-31-2004 09:53 PM

All of those Maiden songs have melodic solos. Just because they don't follow the typical scale patterns doesn't make them unmelodic. :|

its just my opinion that some those songs would be better without the solos or at least if the solos were not quite so long.
