I stated in the cm punk thread, thst I felt rvd's matches started becoming overly routine and formulaic. Well, the same can be said for Mysterio, so this is a tough one.

Gonna have to go Mysterio though. He spearheaded large part of what made wcw a competitor in the late 90's. And he achieved a ton of success in an era where it was still a big man's game.

mike adamle 05-23-2017 06:05 PM

It's tough off the top of the head, but the more I think about it, Mysterio accomplished a lot in both WCW and WWE for a long time. Rob Van Dam accomplished a lot in ECW, but treaded water for a while in WWE.

Mysterio didn't tread water far as much in WWE unless you count all the injuries. Up until about the time Sin Cara came around and Mysterio teamed with him Mysterio was involved in (unless he was injured) an upper card program and it was normally one of the more entertaining ones. And he always did very well in them.

Rob Van Dam's programs weren't always as interesting even though they did result in some entertaining matches.

Plus I think Mysterio's legendary work in WCW is better than Rob's legendary work in ECW.

Destor 05-23-2017 06:06 PM

I think mike just sold me...anyone got a counter point?

SlickyTrickyDamon 05-23-2017 06:07 PM

No.

Rey and Psycosis first mixed up the lucha wrestling with the harcore style in ECW. He inspired Rob Van Dam.

Winner: Rey Mysterio.

mike adamle 05-23-2017 06:08 PM

STD could never have a counter point for me. Fucking drunk

KIRA 05-23-2017 06:41 PM

Rey Mysterio I came to hate him in his WWE run but WCW Rey was a beast.

Overall I feel like he has been more successful than RVD.'

Also feel like Rey's moves were way smoother while still managing to look fucking insane.

DAMN iNATOR 05-23-2017 07:06 PM

Rey was straight up boring in WWE. RVD was a lot more exciting and had signature move spots that always seemed to get the fans out of their seats. He had many tremendous runs as Intercontinental Champion.

The only thing that really holds him back as far as his legacy goes, and it hurts me to say it, because it's a real shame, is his legal trouble practically as soon as he became both WWE and ECW World Champion. If not for that, his run with the two belts could've been really amazing and something special, along the lines of Angle's run as the "EuroContinental" (European and IC Champions concurrently for the uninitiated)... even with this glaring flaw though, my vote goes for Rob all day, every day.

Destor 05-23-2017 07:11 PM

That one sealed it. REY FTW

mike adamle 05-23-2017 07:14 PM

Yeah I do wish we got to see what they were gonna do with RVD as WWECW champ,
i remember I wasn't watching at the time but I heard about and saw the 2005 One Night Stand and thought it was as great as I'd heard, so when I saw they were doing another one I got right into it. Watched the Raws and SmackDown's and even that ECW Head to Head special and was really into Rob's character and was shocked when he won the belt that night at One Night Stand. And then I was really into his reign, he just kept on winning and did a really good job of looking superior against the likes of Cena and Edge.

Lock Jaw 05-23-2017 07:36 PM

Rey Mysterio has been in tons of memorable stories and angles over the years.

Rob Van Dam was in...... one memorable story/angle in his entire WWE run?

This alone, without even getting into their in ring abilities puts Rey way ahead of Rob Van Dam.

Simple Fan 05-23-2017 07:58 PM

Very close here and both have similar careers I think. Went with Rey because I think he did more for the business. Was the star in WCW cruiserweight that put the cruiserweights on the map and WWE starting the first cruiserweight division.

Ol Dirty Dastard 05-23-2017 09:14 PM

Rey was great for a while in WWE actually, before injuries caught up to him. And he was fan fucking tastic in WCW until he was unmasked.

Shisen Kopf 05-23-2017 09:43 PM

Rey is a mexican murderer and i cant respect that. Deport.

Swiss Ultimate 05-23-2017 11:26 PM

Rey is Lucha libre. He was also equal or better of an athlete as RVD. Some of his WWE run was bad, but not because of him.

Memorable stories have nothing to do with being the better wrestler. Vince has been in tons of memorable stories, but he's shit in the ring.

They absolutely do. Being a story teller is a huge aspect of what a wrestler is.

Well, so is RVD. :shifty:

Bad News Gertner 05-24-2017 01:13 AM

Rey brought Spanish viewers in droves. Similar to Pedro Morales to the Puerto Ricans (Bruno and the Italians is a whole other level.) He's the ultimate under dog. I love RVD, but Rey's impact will be felt for decades.

Ezra 05-24-2017 01:31 AM

RVD. I appreciate rey but never liked him. Definitely good in the ring but he just never clicked for me. Rey had a few great feuds over the years but personally he got carried in those as far as I am concerned. Eddie, Jericho and punk.

Nicky Fives 05-24-2017 01:35 AM

Rey had the much larger impact. Brought in loads of hispanic viewers along with Eddie and without him, loads of undersized guys would never had been given a look in WWE.

He won the WWE Championship @ ONS 2006...the 2005 edition was a special tribute to ECW in its original form and in fact many fans still refer to the '05 show as the last TRUE ECW show and with good reason.

Seeing Bischoff at the end saying "FUCK ECW!" only to get his ass handed to him was such a great moment.

Rammsteinmad 05-24-2017 04:01 AM

Both are awesome, but I was a huge Mysterio mark in WCW. I just wish we'd seen him turn heel at least once during his WWE run. He pretty much played out the same angle over and over for the entire duration.

Story telling in the ring and on the mic VS. being booked in good feuds.

You don't control how you're booked most of the time.

Great workers get shit over. Thats the job.

Juan 05-24-2017 08:32 AM

Love RVD but Rey is a legend

Juan 05-24-2017 08:40 AM

One of the best baby faces ever imo

Evil Vito 05-24-2017 08:40 AM

Rey hung around in WWE about four or five years too long, but he was consistently entertaining. His World Title runs sucked, but it's not his fault he was put into a position for which he was clearly miscast.

Rey and Jericho's 2009 feud is one of my unheralded favorites. Just excellent matches throughout and brilliant story telling. The Punk feud was great. The Eddie feud was great albeit with a silly gimmick match attached to it.

That alone makes him better in my book than RVD without even comparing their runs in their previous companies. RVD had maybe one good proper WWE feud and he didn't evolve during his whole run.

I get that. Not all workers can talk either.

My point is that I judge a wrestler by what they do with the opportunity given.

Mysterio in WCW along with the other luchadores didn't get the best booking, but they were nearly always the best part of the show. I'll take Rey over Kevin Nash or Giant.

Sepholio 05-24-2017 09:22 AM

I enjoy RVD a lot.

But Rey is iconic. He is an important part of wrassling history imo. Also find his spot monkey antics to always be entertaining, other than the 619 which, while impressive on it's own, is just a really lame finisher for such a great athlete. Whatever though, he is still the titz0rz.

Swiss Ultimate 05-24-2017 09:43 AM

619 was the "believable" finish for guys way bigger than him.

Sepholio 05-24-2017 10:34 AM

Meh. I get that logic, but he still should have followed it up with some kind of other move afterwards to sell it. The 619 never looked all that powerful really, an added top rope spot or flashy submission afterwards would have helped it ALOT. Too many times it was 619 and done. I honestly hated it ever since the first time I saw it.

Destor 05-24-2017 10:39 AM

He did though...he would do the spring board leg drop...

Sepholio 05-24-2017 10:43 AM

Yeah I guess he did sometimes. Memory must be fogging on me because of the 619 being labeled his finisher for so long and me hating it so much. I def remember him using it for the pin before too, though. I'm calling mandella effect.

Honestly dunno why I forgot about him using the leg drop. Been to long since I've watched one of his matches I guess.

Sepholio 05-24-2017 10:46 AM

I remember him using it as a precursor to a springboard hurricanrana I think? Way back when on smaller opponents. That was very acceptable then. I'll try and find an example.

The way he set up that 619 was the best part of it honestly.

Blue Demon 05-24-2017 11:48 AM

RVD....I've been a bit of a fan of his. Don't dislike Mysterio, but enjoyed RVD more.
