Is "Ironic Fandom" a problem? WTF does it even mean?

As to not derail someone's Jinder appreciation thread...

and how we lack his discipline and commitment.

Am I to understand that people liking someone, even in an over-the-top way, a problem in today's WWE/WRASSLIN/SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT?

#1-norm-fan 07-03-2017 08:33 PM

Pretty sure Noid is referencing when something is really awful and people act like it's amazing ironically just for shits and giggles.

Is it a problem? I donut know.

drave 07-03-2017 08:35 PM

Right, but is that not a matter of opinion? How does he know that KIRA or any other poster doesn't really enjoy (insert wtf you want here).

Is it simply not a matter of perception, which is in the eye of the beholder?

Frank Drebin 07-03-2017 08:36 PM

I'm not privy to the Jinder thread, but yes some are enjoying him in the same annoying ironic fashion as a hipster in skinny jeans and nerd glasses drinking a Papst. They're allowed. It's not hurting anything.

I get it. I, for one, thought the whole thing was dumb. However, it was (and will be again) a mad success. So if someone gets behind it and it does very well, is it not the person who has a problem with it who should look elsewhere?

I'm rambling on 2 hrs of sleep.

#1-norm-fan 07-03-2017 08:36 PM

I think when people "like" something ironically they show it by just fucking around on message board. They generally don't actually give money or anything to WWE for things they like ironically. So I'd lean toward it not being that much of a problem.

I loved Broken Matt Hardy. And it was not really in an ironic way. I genuinely thought it was entertaining as shit.

It's not.

To clarify though I genuinely like and am excited that Mahal is champ.

I thought it was obvious I wasn't serious about him being flawless but I guess Noid thought I was.

Lock Jaw 07-03-2017 08:42 PM

Yeah, and you are allowed to like it. Just like some hipsters genuinely like things un-ironically, but then there are others who like it ironically......

Everyone is unique and allowed their own opinion/viewpoints......

Generally when people go overboard to a comedic level with praise it's either because they find something insanely fucking good or because it's not very good and they're fucking around. There's really not much in between. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

It seems much more likely that anyone heaping that much praise on Jinder is fucking around than that they ACTUALLY think he's the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Holy shit, I am going to blow.

That's it. I said it in the original thread, but ironic fandom has a detached element to it, which is harder to make money off. It's really that simple.

Shisen Kopf 07-03-2017 08:51 PM

Jinder is getting the push that THE RYBACK should have gotten. But Jinder will get all them Rupees for the WWE so thats why they push him. But if him being champ pisses people off im all for it.

No, I knew that you weren't, and I was just calling it out for the sake of the discussion, because I genuinely don't like the idea of him being champ and wanted to talk about it. It was drave that who thought you were serious. My discussion with you was just something along the lines of "come on now, KIRA" and his was "leave KIRA alone."

#1-norm-fan 07-03-2017 08:53 PM

Can you imagine if THE RYBACK was brown??? Fuck.

Mr. Nerfect 07-03-2017 08:53 PM

To emphasize that this is not a problem with people liking what they like:

I completely disagree, but you are entitled to that opinion. I don't think it was entertaining and it made me want to drink whatever was under the sink. But to each their own -- I still value your insight and enjoy conversing with you.

How is this so hard for people?

Not just brown, but a type of brown that is a minority in a much larger community of brown people? Oh god. Where is that Vince fawning gif?

Lock Jaw 07-03-2017 08:54 PM

Agree with up to the extent that it's mainly just something you can block out. It doesn't mean certain trends aren't annoying or that no damage can be done by having fans with no genuine emotionally investment in what you are pimping.

Mr. Nerfect 07-03-2017 08:59 PM

The trifecta for me is Alexa Bliss is the best women's wrestler in the WWE today, The Usos are amazing promos and Jinder Mahal is a great champion. If you say each into a mirror, a picture of Val Venis Photoshopped with all the championships will appear and you will never be able to see your face again.

#1-norm-fan 07-03-2017 09:07 PM

I like this relatively new Noid. I remember a time where it seemed like he thought everyone on the roster deserved a push.

I removed the human element.

Literally anyone: "This dude is a GAWD!!!!"

Literally someone else: "No he isn't, stop taking the piss"

:|

There may, in fact be, fans who see anyone as FLAWLESS and or above, etc. That may be difficult to understand if your personal opinions differ, that is simple.

Anyhoo, you saying you cancelled your sub is exactly what SHOULD happen if you hold the opinion you do. After all, your opinion of what they have become is past the point of wanting to pay for their entertainment. But hey, opinions are all bullshit.

I only questioned why (being sensationalist or not) anyone couldn't hold the opinion that Kira (jokingly) posted and that be "ok".

drave 07-03-2017 09:59 PM

Totes not giving you a red dot either.... because online forum rep is such opinionated bullshit :D

Thanks, man. I came from a very naive place with wrestling. Eventually I became more of a mark for the business side of things and the philosophy of what does and doesn't work, and now I feel a lot more balanced and realistic. A little cynical? Eh, maybe. If something is great, I'll give it credit though. I'm just not going to raise bad to mediocre and mediocre to good.

Yeah, I'll cop to saying exactly what you quoted me on, but I'm not going to cop to the emphasis. You have to semantically dissect "big" to really get me to a point where I am saying what you want me to for the sake of your argument.

It's not the biggest problem with wrestling, and problems with wrestling may not be considered big compared to disease epidemics and such. But to be it is a problem with wrestling being taken seriously again and being able to make money. Is it a "BIG" problem or a "big" problem? That I'm open to discussion about.

KIRA can hold whatever position KIRA wants to. I was just responding to KIRA's posts on the matter, like someone might respond to #fan talking about Fandango. KIRA and I cleared it up earlier.

The "what" chants are way more annoying than anyone ironically enjoying something.

I do want to beat up a hipster drinking Papst though.

They sell Papst over here for an obscene amount of money, because hipsters drink it over there and have made it "cool."

I wouldn't say balanced. I'd say you're currently at the other end of the extreme.

I remember when I was 15 I thought that music wasn't "real music" unless it was played on guitar/bass/drums, and that other music, specifically rap/hip-hop was garbage. Then around 18 I got into "urban" music, but that "pop" music was absolute trash. In my 20s I got to a point where I was like "Heh. Like whatever you like. It all (mostly) has some merit".

Just mellow a bit, man.

Yeah, in that period, it was legit the most entertaining thing going. Once they really embraced the stupidity and Matt got amnesia while Jeff tried to re-break him was comedy gold.
