WWE Removes Moolah's name from the Battle Royal

The WWE announced on Thursday that amidst tons of backlash to Monday’s announcement, they will no longer be naming the women’s battle royal at WrestleMania after the Fabulous Moolah (Lillian Ellison).

The WWE issued the following statement:

After further consideration, we believe it’s best to proceed with the name ‘WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal.’ What remains most important is that this historic match is part of WWE’s unwavering commitment to the Women’s Division.

The name change came just shortly after Mars Wrigley Confectionary US (the parent company of Snickers, the title sponsor at WrestleMania) deemed the decision to honor Fabulous Moolah “unacceptable” with a statement released on Thursday:

We were recently made aware of the World Wrestling Entertainment Inc’s (WWE) decision to honor a former wrestler during the upcoming WrestleMania 34 event. As a principle-based business that has long championed creating inclusive environments that encourage and empower everyone to reach their full potential, this is unacceptable. We are engaging with the WWE to express our disappointment.

Makes sense since some bad press and fan outrage means nothing in the big picture unless sponsors or the network was also pissed.

Based on Steph's recent tweet, not surprised there was also a lot of backlash internally over using Moolah's name. Triple H already made it clear in the past he wants nothing to do with Moolah's name for the Women's Revolution.

DAMN iNATOR 03-15-2018 05:25 PM

And no, I don't condone any of the horrible shit Moolah did, but there are other female competitors it could've been renamed for.

Tell me you wouldn't pop for the Chyna Memorial Battle Royal.

Someone will win it and claim it was for blah blah and then it will be for that person each year going forward.

One of the best of all time but I don't see that happening.

Also, feel like it has to be a dead person. Bull is alive, and running an awesome bar.

Yeah fuck off Steph, your sponsor basically asked you "what the fuck is this shit" once they got wind of Moolah's antics and you backed off, then turned it into some opportunity to say it was the "wwe universe voice being heard".

They never miss a trick to peddle this "we listen to the fans" bullshit when nothing could be further from the truth.

mike adamle 03-15-2018 07:45 PM

The Nicole Bass Memorial Battle Royal would be pretty prestigious.

Emperor Smeat 03-15-2018 08:19 PM

Since WWE was too lazy to name it after someone else, they should just have honored the greatest wrestler ever Vacant. The Vacant Still Alive Women's Battle Royale.

Championships won just counting Vacant's WWE career:
2x WWE Women's champ, 2x NXT Women's champ, 1x Divas champ, & 1x Smackdown Women's champ.

Maybe Sherri or Luna Vachon, then?

Emperor Smeat 03-15-2018 09:22 PM

According to the Observer, one of the side effects of Moolah's name getting dropped was Hogan's possible return is a lot less likely to happen due to his own negative PR baggage.

Same for several others who could cause PR problems for sponsors.

Would be idiotic to bring Hogan back.

Emperor Smeat 03-16-2018 01:59 AM

Rumor going around the net is Vince was solely responsible and demanded the match to be honored after the Fabulous Moolah. Was livid it had to be changed because of fan backlash and that the backlash actually managed to affect sponsors.

Same rumor hinted WWE is wary of generating any more controversy until the next tv contract is done and then Vince can go right back into not giving a fuck about the fans or the media for his decisions.

Blonde Moment 03-16-2018 03:23 AM

So, how will vicne get his revenge?
Some figure he'll put the Battle Royal on the preshow while others think he might srew with the A.J/Shinsuke Nakamura match somehow..

Oh for sure, we are gonna get fucked over for this one. I bet AJ/Shinsuke gets cut to like 17 seconds.

Mr. Nerfect 03-16-2018 08:30 PM

What remains most important is that the “@WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal” will be a historic match and is part of @WWE’s unwavering commitment to spin our terribly insensitive decisions because we really don't give a shit in order to retain sponsors.

What are the chances - given they were smart enough not to honour her for the tournament last year - that they knowingly used Moolah’s name to get the (bad) publicity in order to parlay it into good publicity of changing the name?

Simple Fan 03-18-2018 08:07 PM

I think WWE making the change is silly. I don't agree with naming it after her but at least stick with your decision. Makes WWE look dumb and makes fans think they can change things just by complaining on the internet.

Little to none considering the risks outweighed the benefits by a lot. They were lucky a lose-lose situation didn't happen where sponsors just bailed or became furious at being played by the WWE. Same for risking their tv contract talks by having FOX and others start to reconsider wanting to do business with the company.

If anything, Vince/WWE was probably banking on the backlash having no teeth or sponsors/media not caring because of wrestling's low image in the main stream. Would have opened the door for bringing Hogan and others with questionable reputations back into the company's graces.

WWE is dumb and has gone with that as a narrative, as opposed to "we really don't give a shit about women and this is a big PR campaign because guys like fapping to female MMA stars."

Savio 03-18-2018 09:56 PM

Vince is probably going to name one of his XFL teams the "New York Moolah".
