Starting tonight, Renee Young will be the first woman to join the Raw broadcast booth full-time.

She will now bring her unique voice and perspective to the longest-running weekly episodic program in the U.S. as she joins Michael Cole and Corey Graves at the commentary desk.

Renee joined WWE in 2012 and has served as a backstage interviewer and commentator on Raw, SmackDown LIVE and NXT.

She is currently part of the Mae Young Classic commentary team on WWE Network.
Nice move here! =)

Our long national nightmare is at its end.

But how the fuck am I going to know what the word of the hour is, AND WHO THE FUCK WILL TELL ME WHEN A WRESTLER CAN TAKE A BREATHER IN A HOLD

Jordan 09-10-2018 10:21 AM

Adios Coach!

Big Vic 09-10-2018 10:22 AM

Only one minority at a time.

Big Vic 09-10-2018 10:23 AM

Hopefully Coach replaces Byron.

She's an improvement over Coach and will likely grow in the role over time

I think Graves/Renee work well together
I look forward to Cole eventually disappearing from commentary

The word of the first hour tonight is "replaced"
The word of the second hour is "RELIEF"
The word of the third hour is "FREEEEEEEDOM"

Still prefer JBL or Booker T.

Stickman 09-10-2018 12:29 PM

Just goes to show how bad the announce teams have been over the past 10 years when people are excited about this. I love me some Renee don't get me wrong, but she's not very good. The announce teams have been terrible since Cole took over.

Big Vic 09-10-2018 12:31 PM

Paul Heyman and JR were my fav.

Nicky Fives 09-10-2018 12:31 PM

I'd don't hate Cole as much as many people do, its more the voice in his ear telling him scream "The Big Dog" than Cole himself I believe. Without the Vince birdie in his ear and Cole "doing what he wanted," I think the commentary would be much better....

everyone blames the office for literally everything they dont like...funny how they never credit the office for anything done well though.

slik 09-10-2018 12:52 PM

My commentary dream team was always Dusty Rhodes and Booker T

I think in this case it's a pretty fair criticism, though. There's a pretty marked difference between Cole on Raw/PPV and Cole on the MYC or like the UK special. It also probably doesn't help that on Raw/PPV he also has to plug/promote 4085283 things beyond the gimmicks/nicknames/catchphrases.

Cool King 09-10-2018 03:35 PM

I'm just waiting for the day when both shows return to a commentary team that consists of a duo but I know I'll be waiting a hell of a long time for that.

Having a trio at the table is just awkward and too "busy". It wasn't until I started watching Raw & SmackDown from 2002 on the network that I really noticed the big difference in quality.

A duo is so much more easier to listen to and you're not bombarded with multiple voices shouting over each other like what usually ends up happening with a trio.

There are still people in his ear for those shows. Youve proved me right.

:y: Renee replacing Coachman.

Main problem with Coachman wasn't his style of commentary but him coming off on tv as someone who did little to no prep work before shows. Between his random blabbering and the constant bickering by Cole & Graves, he was in no position to succeed on RAW.

Based on Cole's recent comments about Renee, seems he's a lot more invested in wanting her to succeed than with Coachman.

I think this is what will hamper Young at the moment; she’s gonna be resigned to “oohs” and “ahs” and odd comment amongst Cole and Graves.

Fair. I think when people complain about "the office," that's more a shorthand for the particular soup that makes up production for the "main" shows. Not to say there aren't some mouthbreathers that think everything is SOLELY Kevin Dunn or Vince or whomever is the cause of all that is unholy in this particular moment.

Whatever soup is being poured into Cole's ear on Raw/PPV is bad. Whatever soup is getting poured into his ear on side specials is good. I'm not sure that there's a great way to condense that down pithily.

Emperor Smeat 09-10-2018 05:08 PM

The main difference seems to be Vince (and Kevin Dunn to a degree). Vince is mostly in charge of RAW and PPVS while SmackDown is mostly Cole and NXT is a mix of Cole & Triple H's crew.

For Network specials, its mostly Triple H's crew if Cole is working there or a mix of Cole & Triple H's crew if he's not.

Prior to Cole leaving SmackDown, Vince and Kevin Dunn were mostly in charge of commentary there.

ClockShot 09-10-2018 05:08 PM

First thing that popped in my head when I read this at work today was "OHHHHHHHH!"

The change is nice.

xrodmuc316 09-10-2018 05:50 PM

Why do they keep hyping this as the first time a woman has done this?

Granted WWE writers think we have a 10 day memory only, but I remember that Sunny was a commentator on Raw.

Edit:They are saying it's the first time a woman has done it for a 3 hour show lol

Well then

My Final Heaven 09-10-2018 10:12 PM

I see this as a good thing, Renee has enough backbone to her to stand up to Graves whenever he goes into his salty hipster douche act. I've been saying for years, bring up William Regal for main roster commentary, just because he's one of the few face commentators they have that doesn't cry and apologize profusely whenever the heel color guy yells at him. Renee'll do, tho.

DaveWadding 09-11-2018 01:45 AM

After Evolution, they'll go to someone else

Mr. Nerfect 09-11-2018 08:52 PM

I'm surprised that they just didn't leave Coachman there.

Mr. Nerfect 09-11-2018 08:53 PM

Commentary sucks. It's a combination of a lot of factors. You can tell they are handed verbiage. But that also speaks to the sort of person in the role too. I miss the old commentary philosophy, but I miss the old commentators too.

He was actually good in the UK tournament like really really good

mike adamle 09-11-2018 08:59 PM

They should just have Rene and Michael Cole as the announce team. Maybe even run an angle where Cole is fingering her during a match or something. That'd get over huge, I'd have to think the ratings would skyrocket.

Was he good as in good-good, or just good as in "it is refreshing to hear anything more organic than usual." What people say about the "WWE style" of commentators is very true, but I don't think Destor is actually completely off the mark. People have a tendency to overrate the performers when they feel that the office has had some negative influence.

Michael Cole sucked in 1999. He sucked in 2000. He sucked in 2001. He got a lot better with Paul Heyman producing him 2002, but not by much. He has always sort of sucked. He sucks more now and we feel sorry for him, because we know that he's told to say certain things and drive home the WWE party lines. But another thing to consider is this:

Vince McMahon has always had something to do with commentary. JR had to put up with this, Jerry Lawler had to put up with this, Bobby Heenan would have had to put up with it. Or, if they didn't, then it's because Vince felt like he didn't need to do that.

And by now, that's part of the art. You're a puppet at Vince McMahon's show. You're going to have to use verbiage that comes from him. The art is now in making it seem like it isn't your own, which Cole can't do very well at all. A great commentator in modern WWE should be able to put their own flare into it and deliver the information in a way that satisfies the communicative needs of the job, but is also entertaining.

When the commentary sucks, I do think it is a cop-out to blame Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn. I don't agree with them on commentary philosophically, so I think it would get better if someone else took it over, but I don't think it'll get as good as people think, because you are clearly dealing with individuals that are limited anyway.

Cool King 09-12-2018 06:45 AM

At the beginning of Raw, Cole said that the WWE were making history tonight as for the first time ever a woman is "full-time at a WWE announce booth" but as always they're making their own history as we've already had Lita's 2002-2003 full-time run at the announce booth on Heat which was then followed by Ivory's 2004-2005 full-time run.

We then had Beth Phoenix having a full-time run at the announce booth on Mixed Match Challenge at the beginning on this year.

Cool King 09-12-2018 06:45 AM

I'm thinking about it now and I really hope Renee being on Raw doesn't mean that Beth Phoenix will be ousted from her spot on Mixed Match Challenge and replaced with Renee.

XL 09-12-2018 09:32 AM

I think the “first ever” talk was specifically about Raw (though I read that that came with its own caveat about it being in the 3 hour era)

Choviko Man 09-12-2018 07:51 PM
