Examples of the Mandela Effect in wrestling

Thought this could be a fun topic. Things you definitely remember a certain way, but then upon revisiting them it turns out you were completely wrong.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 02:07 PM

I was sure the WWF used to use black ropes for PPV in 2000. I was so sure this was the sort of thing I’d notice too. Turns out they used red ropes for all the PPVs outside the WrestleMania, King of the Ring, SummerSlam and Survivor Series. The Royal Rumble had red ropes too. They only went to black ropes for non-big four PPVs with Invasion.

Multiple times throughout my life I have thought Fred Ottman to be deceased, only to find that he is still alive.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 02:18 PM

I used to swear Undertaker served a “Higher Power.” Turns out it was a “Greater Power.”

That’s one I think of too. I also think the same about Adam Bomb and Dory Funk, Jr., for whatever reason.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 02:25 PM

Ole Anderson is another guy that I assumed died for a while. Not that I think I remember hearing about it, but I think I’ve just conflated him leaving the business with passing away.

Lock Jaw 06-21-2021 02:26 PM

I remember a time when Ken Shamrock would bleed from the mouth in every single match and Jim Ross would yell out "HE'S BLEEDING INTERNALLY!!"

But most likely it did not happen every match.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 02:31 PM

I don’t know why, but even though it’s one of my most watched matches of all-time as a kid, I cannot remember Perry Saturn being in it. Everything else about the match is so vivid, but when I watched it recently I had completely forgotten that Saturn was in there in like fluro trunks, lol.

M-A-G 06-21-2021 02:33 PM

I remember the Attitude Era being quality.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 02:35 PM

It was only a one-show turnaround, but I was pretty obsessed with title history, and wouldn’t have been able to tell you that The Rock & Undertaker won the WWF Tag Team Titles.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 02:45 PM

I’m sure I remember Raven winning the NWA Title a second time in TNA. Or that he won it earlier than he did. Thought for sure he beat AJ Styles in a Ladder Match for it. But I think he lost to AJ in a Ladder Match, then won it from him way later in a King of the Mountain.

1997 and 1998 being the best years of ECW

Bad News Gertner 06-21-2021 02:56 PM

Here's my ultimate one:

Savio Vega IC Champion. I know he won the belt against Goldust but had it reversed, but I swore he had an actual title reign

M-A-G 06-21-2021 02:57 PM

Didn't Ted DiBiase wear a monocle?

Lock Jaw 06-21-2021 03:00 PM

Here's a good one that I don't even know the answer to.... was Bret Hart ever introduced as "The Hitman" or was it always just "Hitman"?

Fignuts 06-21-2021 03:00 PM

lol no

Fignuts 06-21-2021 03:00 PM

Not sure about that one but I know he was once introduced as Bret Clark by Michael Buffer.

M-A-G 06-21-2021 03:04 PM

During the Hollys and Dudleys feud where Spike and Molly fell for each other, I remember after the others were beaten up and the two of them finally embraced and kissed Molly had braces when she smiled at Spike.

M-A-G 06-21-2021 03:05 PM

George 'The Animal' Steele had a tail if I recall correctly.

He definitely was in his early WWF Hart Foundation years

Lock Jaw 06-21-2021 03:32 PM

In that video it is just "Hitman"..... That's what I am talking about... thought it was "The Hitman", but I've been seeing videos recently with it just being "Hitman" and it sounds wrong, but might be right?

weather vane 06-21-2021 04:06 PM

I hear Fink saying Bret Hitmannnnnnnnnn Hart.

weather vane 06-21-2021 04:07 PM

Also Adam Bomb being dead.

Ack. Read that wrong.

Bad News Gertner 06-21-2021 04:17 PM

I know they called him "The Hitman" Bret Hart

I feel like Okerlund called him "The Hitman."

Bad News Gertner 06-21-2021 04:20 PM

And here they are calling him Bret The Hitman Hart.

It looks like it just depended on who was doing the ring announcing.

For the longest time I assumed I'd seen Droz' horrible injury when he got paralyzed wrestling D'Lo Brown. Descriptions and details of the event are widespread. Thankfully, nobody has actually seen it unless they were at that SmackDown taping. The original footage is locked away in archives.

They do, however, show Droz getting lifted out of the ring on a stretcher in the "don't try this at home" video from WWE DVDs, and that's where I think the Mandela effect comes in.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 08:50 PM

There are some good ones in here. I also feel like I’ve seen the D’Lo powerbomb. I feel like I can see which corner he is running from and everything.

Bret is always “The Hitman” in my head. Wtf if it was just Bret “Hitman” Hart.

Lol, ECW’s best years were a bit earlier than that weren’t they, Gerty? But they definitely feel like they should be later.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2021 08:52 PM

Triple H being a babyface from 2006 until 2013 really trips me out. He was a face for THAT LONG. I go back and think of his matches with The Undertaker, CM Punk, John Cena and Randy Orton, etc. and have to remind myself that he was a clear-cut “good guy” in those programs.

Yeah, it’s crazy to think about where I was during those years and what I associate ECW with. I think about myself being much older when ECW was really delivering, lol.

It’s also weird to correspond those years with where the other promotions were.

Where does 99 fit in for you? Top two I agree completely, 2000 I wouldn't put in third just because it really falls off the rails in the second half of the year, though Tajiri is an absolute gem. 97 starts pretty strong, then kinda falls apart and 98 is rightly listed as a toilet year.

Mr. Nerfect 06-22-2021 07:41 AM

I always liked Tajiri, but going back, maaaaan is he really good. Even when he gets to the WWE. I watched a random Jamie Noble vs. Tajiri match and I genuinely got excited watching it.
