Rate the Game: Week 95
 

OK, so this is the second Rate the Game I'm doing this week in order to help make up for lost time having to face two different games not getting on the list. American McGee's Alice and Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes share the same tragic fate of not securing enough ratings and thus they are out of contention. Well we can't quite get away from fighting games, can we. While this isn't the first game in this franchise, it did kick things off in its own way. It's the weapon-swinging brawl fest that spawned a million cosplays, Soul Calibur! Does this game have an awesome edge to it or is it dull as all hell? Let's find out by rating this bad boy. Played the demo of this one (I think) it seemed fine but I'm not big on fighting games.

Played future games. But not this one.

OG is fine. got better with 2

I played a Soul Calibur game once at a friend's house on the Dreamcast.... couldn't tell you which one it was, but I remember having fun at the time..... though it is entirely possible that the game I am thinking I had fun with was another one I played at his house and am getting them confused....

Never understood why they didn't just continue the series under the Soul Edge banner. I always thought that was a cooler name.

Gave it a 3. It was a solid first showing for a new fighting game, but the only reason I scored it so low was because I firmly believe they way outdid this and every other game in the series with its sequel, Soul Calibur II.

Brand recognition?

Lock Jaw teasing everyone by making them think he'll finally say he's played a game in this series and give it a score. Toying with our emotions...

I think the game I am remembering I had fun with was Power Stone 2 or something.... but I might have also had fun with Soul Calibur, I can't be sure

Sure, but the first game was called Soul Edge and you would think that they would call the follow up Soul Edge 2. I'm sure there's a story reason for it. I just always thought Soul Edge was a cooler name.

There is/was a weird copyright issue with the word "Edge" when it comes to video games.

I'm 💯 not even joking when I say it was -- and it wasn't close. I was that kid who was insufferable to the rest of their classmates in math class because I would be trying to answer every single question lmao

Does that mean you were good at math but not the other subjects?

I mostly got B's and C's, sometimes an 'A', and occasionally a 'D' or 'F', though I only ever had like 2 classes I failed. One was earth science, other I forget. Surprisingly, though, and in a very pleasant way, I actually managed a B- in biology, though I suppose it's probably a lot more basic than earth science.
