Jim Carrey & sequels

https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/en...c-2-rules.html

1. Ace sequel was better than the first
2. He finally came back for a sequel to Dumb & Dumber that was worse than both the knockoff Stuck on You movie and the prequel Dumb & Dumberer

He was smart not to do a Mask sequel but he was in demand at that time.

Dude shouldn't pretend he doesn't do sequels.

Doing the second Ace Ventura movie is what put him off of doing sequels in the first place. I'm not sure of the circumstances surrounding his decision to do Dumb and Dumber 2 but if that's the only one he's done since then it's fair to say that he doesn't really do sequels.

I wonder if he woulda felt different knowing people loved, "When Nature Calls"

So many meme that coulda happened at that time.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-07-2022 09:08 AM

not fond of Nature Calls. Much prefer the first.

Seanny One Ball 04-07-2022 09:28 AM

Ace Ventura is the better film, When Nature Calls is outright funnier.

Big Vic 04-07-2022 10:31 AM

Nature calls was awful.

GD 04-07-2022 10:51 AM

Awfully funny.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-07-2022 10:53 AM

Yeah I didn't find it funny.

TBH a lot of Jim Carrey movies don't age well in the humor department. He's a fucking tryhard. First ace ventura def has its moments, and dumb and dumber is legit fucking gutbusting. Other than that? eh.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-07-2022 10:55 AM

Was rewatching the Mask lastnight and my god. Got some nostalgia love for it but that whole Mask character is not funny at all. So fucking annoying. I guess as a kid it was cool.

GD 04-07-2022 10:58 AM

His career doesn't hold a candle to how amusing Hannah Gadsby's special was.

Destor 04-07-2022 11:16 AM

calls is funnier if you were the right age when you first saw it. detective has a more coherent story with better character arcs and development. so i dunno. if you watched them raw today...detective i think easily. but tbf i dont get much out of physical comedy and sight gags.

#1-norm-fan 04-07-2022 11:36 AM

Yeah, I was obsessed with Jim Carrey as a kid and saw When Nature Calls as an easy-to-amuse 11 year old and even then I walked away feeling “eh” about it.

The original was much better.

Cable Guy is pretty underrated, IMO.

need to rewatch it.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-07-2022 11:47 AM

That said, I do like Carrey's later work. I think he's overall kind of a prick but I really like that Mr. Rogers takeoff show he did (the name escapes me right now). I'd actually say he's at his best when he's not trying to be funny.

Destor 04-07-2022 11:48 AM

my top 3 carey flicks:

3. The Cable Guy
2. The Truman Show
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

of his more slapstick/high energy roles i liked the mask well enough. oh liar liar too. holds up.

Destor 04-07-2022 11:50 AM

the 3 carey flicks i listed though i think are very good movies

Destor 04-07-2022 11:55 AM

in all fairness out of all mediums comedy ages the poorest. humor is very much a product of its time especially when on a level that is meant for mass appeal. comedy occurs on the edges of cultural acceptance. by nature it expands the bubble that acceptance dwells. whats edgy today is tame tomorrow. thats why it shouldnt be a shock to see his character pieces age well. a good character lasts.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-07-2022 12:05 PM

Hmm I watched Liar Liar recently and can't say I felt the same about it aging well. To each their own, though.

And I'd argue that while a lot of comedies don't age well, many do. Dumb and Dumber being one of them.

Need to see Eternal Sunshine but have heard only good things.

Destor 04-07-2022 12:06 PM

i didnt enjoy dumb and dumber the first time around so i cant imagine time made it better

Destor 04-07-2022 12:07 PM

i remeber the trailer was on a vhs i watched all time and it annoyed me to no end...cant recall what movie that was...

Destor 04-07-2022 12:07 PM

shout out to the mask vhs introducing me to space ghost coast to coast though

ron the dial 04-07-2022 12:09 PM

still blows my mind that the first ace ventura, dumb & dumber, and the mask all came out in 94. what a year for carrey.

Bad News Gertner 04-07-2022 12:28 PM

Nature Calls was funny when I saw it as a 13 year old. Haven't seen it since

Eternal Sunshine and The Truman Show are probably 2 and 3 for me behind Man on the Moon.

Destor 04-07-2022 01:57 PM

man on the moon would easily be 4 for me. cable guy is way too good

Seanny One Ball 04-07-2022 02:03 PM

His best film is The Truman Show.
His best comedy is Dumb and Dumber.
His best performance is Man On The Moon.

The Cable Guy should have been more influential than it was, it completely remodelled what a dark comedy should look like. True genius.

I also have a soft spot for Earth Girls Are Easy but that’s as much for Goldbloom and Wayans as anything else.

Destor 04-07-2022 02:17 PM

i liked once bitten in a guilty pleasure sort of way

Mortal Kombat

#1-norm-fan 04-07-2022 02:30 PM

As long as we can all agree The Cable Guy deserves way more attention…

Fignuts 04-07-2022 02:31 PM

I enjoyed Me, Myself, and Irene when it came out.

It’s about as dark as a comedy can get before it becomes an occasionally funny psychological thriller film…and they aimed it at kids.

Salt peanuts salt peanuts…

Savio 04-08-2022 06:40 PM

Lol did they? Gotta see that trailer.

ClockShot 04-08-2022 08:51 PM

Liar Liar is funny if you watch it uncensored.

If you watch it on cable TV with everything censored, not so much.

#1-norm-fan 04-08-2022 11:59 PM

Remember that Adam Sandler/Damon Wayans movie “Bulletproof”? It’s a rare example of TV censorship making a movie way better.

I watched it on USA years ago and there’s a scene where Adam Sandler is threatening to piss on Damon Wayans while he sleeps and starts listing animals he’s going to get to piss on him as well.

Instead of just bleeping the word “piss”, they had a bad Adam Sandler impersonator recite the ENTIRE 15+ second monologue and just replace “piss” with “sit”. It became by far the funniest part of the movie.

Seanny One Ball 04-12-2022 03:22 PM

“Bulletproof” is a perfectly inoffensive little sample of mediocrity and I must have seen it five times. I can’t tell you anything that happens beyond Sandler’s character having a stoner mother and Wayans having a plate in his head.

It is far from the worst movie Sandler, Wayans or Caan have ever made.

“Oh Billy” is probably the best reference ever.

They totally aimed it at kids. That trailer doesn’t show the context at all. It looks like a riot!

Destor 04-12-2022 05:46 PM

i dont see kids i see they marketed it like it was a standard carey feature
