ESPN reporter said it was a multi-event deal through 2023 and he will wrestle on premium live events and appear on tv

erickman 06-30-2022 03:15 PM

RP 06-30-2022 03:19 PM

I thought it was $10 million? Maybe that’s just the tag on his mansion?

I’m not surprised he’s sticking around. He did really well at Mania and he’s got quite the profile, as much as people hate the idea of that.

Mr. Nerfect 06-30-2022 04:13 PM

He’s going to move business way more than CM Punk, xrod. Plus he’s got more real fight credibility.

Destor 06-30-2022 05:39 PM

smart move for all parties really.

He would absolutely kill Punk in a fight. He called Punk out before, and Punk cried or made a passive tweet, typical Phil stuff

Logan Paul shows up for 1 Raw and he instantly gets a higher rating than Phil has in 8+ years too BTW

oh in a shoot he'd murder punk. talking 10 or 15 seconds

Crippla 07-01-2022 05:45 PM

I was wondering when this was going to happen...I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually became a full time part of the brand.

Why would this even be a question lol. He’d knockout a lot of wrestlers in a shoot.

Destor 07-01-2022 07:31 PM

but punk far far easier than most

Seanny One Ball 07-01-2022 07:57 PM

Gay!

Lock Jaw 07-01-2022 08:56 PM

From what I saw ag WM he seems like a natural heel... making him a face vs Miz would be a miztake

No shit lol I don't know why this always gets brought up in every other thread about whoever it is would kick Punk's ass in a shoot...I don't think anyone thinks that Punk is some legit tough guy. But I'm guessing since we are talking about Logan Paul, the emphasis was supposed to be on the 10-15 seconds lol

False, Tony Khan and Punk himself thinks he is a legit tough guy. It doesnt matter how many guardrails injure Punk, "HE IS THE MOST PROFITABLE GUY AEW EVER SIGNED!!!!!!!!!!!" ~Tiny Khan, direct quote

it comes up because they sell him as a tough guy. if he was a plucky baby trying to overcome his own weakness (a time tested way to book babies) it would be less of an issue. the name of the game is cognitive dissonance. the back of our brains know its all bullshit but we want to believe in the moment. we want to lie to ourselves. well with punk its a big fucking whopper. beyond plausibility.

imagine you're watching a film. its a horror movie. the first act is all tension. off screen kills. never seeing the monster. when you finally see it its a rediculous looking glorified teddy bear and the hand operating it is clearly in frame.

its not a horror film anymore. its unintentional comedy. thats punk. his credibility, or lack there of, is absolutely salient.

Frank Drebin 07-01-2022 10:26 PM

Destor takes his wrestling very seriously in 2022

Destor 07-01-2022 10:31 PM

thats kinda what im driving at though. i want to. and i would if theyd let me.

Destor 07-01-2022 10:40 PM

take the cody/rollins match. it was the easiest thing in the world to care because you bought the struggle. the central narrative of the match was easy to live in because reality and the drama of the match met head on and merged into one thing. that level of investment is obviously rare these days since we dont actually fear for our babies but the juxtaposition is obvious.

you have to force yourself to invest in punk. it isnt organic. and in the pool of potential fans, people who have no desire to be fans but could be made fans if they product was engaging enough, the idea of going out of their way to buy into this awful presentation is simply never going to happen.

cm punk as a tough guy simply can not generate new veiwers and he might do more to turn them away. the only thing he can do is draw in the hardcore fans that want to stick it to the big evil corporation... and youve already got nearly 100% of that audience. its cool for them but at the expense of infinity.

Destor 07-01-2022 10:52 PM

maybe its a big brain play though. all art is the search for truth after all. perhaps this is subverting truth to show us what truth *isnt* to reinforce what truth *is.*

..we should probably just stick with formalism and expressionism in our wrestling though. wrestling isnt really a platform for post modernist expression.

XL 07-02-2022 02:36 AM

Bruising is the new blading. Get with the programme AEW.

So are you saying you can't buy CM Punk as a tough guy because if his real life persona and what you know about him irl or because of the way he portrays it? Because if it's the former, he wouldn't be the first wrestler that would be hard to believe in their gimmick and whatnot. Would you feel the same way if Punk was around in the 80s or 90s when everything wasn't so publicized and we didn't have things like social media for example. I suppose you can't really say with a hypothetical question like that though. However I do agree with you that he will not draw in any new fans and overall drawing is the most important thing so I get your point but I just find your reasoning very debatable if you meant it as the former of the two. I compare it to not buying an actor as a certain role because of what you know about him irl despite how well he portrays that character.

DrA 07-02-2022 12:10 PM

The way I look at it with CM Punk is that there are certain martial arts that are good for MMA and others that are better suited for professional wrestling. He was just out of his domain in the UFC in the same way Glacier was out of his domain in WCW. Not everyone can be Brock Lesnar or Deion Sanders and be world class athletes in multiple sports.

Crippla 07-02-2022 12:18 PM

Or my personal favorite Bo Jackson! But I kind of agree with your point there, it's not like Punk lacks any talent in the ring

Crippla 07-02-2022 12:21 PM

Like I said, he's probably not even in my top 30 wrestlers but I do find him entertaining sometimes

XL 07-02-2022 01:42 PM

Anyway, Logan Paul signed with WWE.

Crippla 07-02-2022 01:58 PM

Lol back on topic

Crippla 07-02-2022 02:00 PM

I'm just going to point out before anyone gives him shit that xrod was not the one to bring up Punk this time surprisingly

Mr. Nerfect 07-02-2022 02:44 PM

Lol, I brought up Punk as a joke and because I’m anticipating a lot of fans to try and shit on this signing because Paul isn’t a “real wrestler.” Punk’s been exposed as a fake phoney way more than Paul has. Paul is younger and has a more direct pipeline to people too.

Fignuts 07-02-2022 05:13 PM

If anyone shits on it, it's because he's been a genuinely unlikeable person for the majority of his time in the limelight.

Can't deny that he did great at mania, but for a lot of people thats not enough to forget his previous douchebaggery.

#1-norm-fan 07-02-2022 05:31 PM

I think the more likely reason people will shit on it is gonna be because it’s another example of WWE letting outside mediums make stars for them to purchase instead of them making actual stars themselves.

Crippla 07-02-2022 05:38 PM

Everyone starts somewhere...I think Logan Paul will do well and I don't see him not taking it seriously or not putting in the effort. I hate when people dog somebody over something like that without giving them a chance.

Not half as much as his brother lol though I'm pretty sure WWE wouldn't touch Jake because of the sexual assault allegations

I understand that but it's definitely a smarter move to bring him in business wise and attract new fans as opposed to people (like us) who will complain about shit like that but still tune in...though I have not watched Raw or SmackDown in a while

I don’t think it’s dogging him as much as it’s dogging WWE.

And for the record, I don’t particularly agree with the “dogging” per se.

I’ve always defended WWE bringing in legends who were made in a previous era/by another company altogether.

It’s not ideal but if the art of making stars is lost on you, then milk the stars you can buy for all they’re worth.

It honestly would be best to do both. I think WWE still has the ability to 'make stars' but don't always seem to go in the direction that fans are clearly calling for these days. Sometimes I can see the logic in their decisions though but other times I'm pretty dumbfounded and can't make sense of things

#1-norm-fan 07-02-2022 05:53 PM

That being said, WWE also has a habit of pushing their failures over the true stars they’ve purchased as if that’s all it takes to build a star.

Like when Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt went from beating Goldberg for the World Title and beating John Cena… (in Cena’s head?) at WrestleMania and neither guy was even deemed worthy of a roster spot the next year. lol
