Rate the Game: Week 119

It's another lovely Tuesday morning, ladies and gentlemen! Well, lovely might be subjective but it is a Tuesday morning and you know what that means! Rate the Game returns for its 119th week and 119th game. I'm certainly ready to dig into it like it was a bowl of my favorite cereal. Corn Pops, for those who might be curious about that. Something else you might be curious about is how last week's Gauntlet Legends turned out and how it ranks on the leaderboard. Well, ask and ye shall receive....

It ends up on the lower end of the list at number 83 but it does do significantly better than the original Gauntlet and even manages to outrank titles like Gears of War, Borderlands, and the original Uncharted so there's some stuff that it can flex and show off.

Another week means another game. We've got seven left in the tank so let's do this. Bowl, you may not be filled with cereal at the moment but I know you got something good. What do we have this week?

<iframe src="https://giphy.com/embed/UTmK0w6g8pQlotVawy" width="480" height="222" frameBorder="0" class="giphy-embed" allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href="https://giphy.com/gifs/UTmK0w6g8pQlotVawy">via GIPHY</a></p>

And then there were six. Rate the Game goes back to being spooky and creepy and all that horror-related stuff as we take a gander at another entry of Capcom's beloved zombie-hunting scarefest, Resident Evil 2! The other 3 titles we've done here on Rate the Game are kind of all over the place on our leaderboard, with Resident Evil 4 claiming the bragging rights of being the highest-ranking title of them all so far, but how does this one fare in your eyes? Is it a worthy entry in the franchise? How does it compare to the original and follow-ups? Something to ponder over as we march on. Until next week!

Loved the fook outta this one. I cannot recall every detail of the playthroughs, but I do remember Tyrant pursuing you through rooms, and that shit was intense.

From RE1 - once you made it through a door, you were "safe". I LOVED the intro for the lickers, very creepy and classic horror stuff there.

It did a lot that the first one did, but didn't have the "feel" of the first one I guess. Lotsa stuff kinda repeated toward the end, so 4/5.

Destor 07-19-2022 11:51 AM

I wanted to give this a 4 based on my own enjoyment of the game...but honestly is the a better/more influential game in the genre at that point or beyond? It has to be a 5...yeah?

weather vane 07-19-2022 01:21 PM

FIVE. Top ten game for me probably.

Lock Jaw 07-19-2022 02:35 PM

Never played it.

4. Great game. Not worthy of a 5 imo though because it is nowhere near the masterpiece RE4 is.

I like RE4 better but its an action game...RE2 peak is survival horror

Sepholio 07-19-2022 08:44 PM

It's up there, but it ain't peak for me. The first 2 Dead Space games hold that peak position for me. And I'll always have a soft spot for the original AITD.

Sepholio 07-19-2022 08:45 PM

TBH I never found RE to be very scary though. Tense, sure, but it never had me scared.

Destor 07-19-2022 08:48 PM

My angle into the genre has always been resource management

Destor 07-19-2022 08:48 PM

More of a survival guy than a horror guy

Sepholio 07-19-2022 08:55 PM

I can respect that. I don't really like survival/resource management games in general, but the ones in the horror genre I do find to be acceptable in most cases.

Destor 07-19-2022 09:01 PM

A game has to justify it. In most games the target is to make the player feel powerful so robbing the player of what makes them feel that way, in theory removing "the fun," is a bold move. But resource management done right is like edging. You're gonna cum. But its not about the cumming. Its about the coming cumming

Sepholio 07-19-2022 09:13 PM

I think my dislike of the resource management aspect is more because of how I tend to second guess decisions because of it. I'm the kind of person that when I know there are finite resources, I will end up hoarding everything and never using it. Hell, I do it in games where the management isn't even that big of a deal.

With healing herbs, for example. I may need one horribly, and have some to use. But I won't, fearing I won't find anymore for a long time. So I'll slog through the scenario, dying and reloading until I make it, because I just can't bring myself to use the damn item.

Then I get to the end of the game and I have every health potion ever still in my inventory -_-

Sepholio 07-19-2022 09:14 PM

Obviously I'm exaggerating, but I know you get what I'm saying. I'm a pack rat. I hold onto everything.

F.E.A.R. is the least scary horror game ever because you're a walking murder machine with the arsenal of a small nation.

Destor 07-19-2022 09:29 PM

Yeah its like Doom is what could easily be a horror setting...but it isnt. It isnt because youre a murder monster and the demons should fear you. (Which fine but you see my point)

thats how i am with pots in rpgs

Sepholio 07-19-2022 10:01 PM

^^^yup, that's where I developed the habit haha

Sepholio 07-19-2022 10:01 PM

Also Doom 3 was the only horror game in that franchise.

Fignuts 07-19-2022 10:04 PM

You're still very powerful in that game, and no matter how scary it gets, you're still shotgunning everything in the face.

I've always viewed resource management as just an extra challenge to overcome. It's like a dare from the game, almost. It's like, "Alright, wiseguy; how smart and resourceful would you really be in this situation?" It's rewarding when it can be pulled off right. Not every game in the genre manages to make it compelling. Silent Hill: Downpour did it TERRIBLY, with its tendency to just flat out rob you of your items after certain points, making you look stupid for hoarding. I get it, though, if it's not your cup of tea. Sometimes just mowing down enemies is satisfying enough.

I get really good weapons in BOTW and never use them.

drave 07-20-2022 12:57 PM

Man, I'm about to be at the divine beast for Death Mountain, but definitely going to have to go food//resource gathering first. That place seems tough, and half my weapons caught fire :D

I love the little things like that. I also learned the hard way to not use bomb arrows anywhere it's hot.

I suppose I should bring up the remake. I'm in the middle of it on the Xbox One and it's a pretty hefty upgrade. I think I'm too far removed from the original to make a good comparison but on its own it's some good shit.
