Best Tag Team Tournament: Round 1, Group D

The final group of Round 1. GET HYPED!

This one is actually the second best grouping, IMO. But it does have the best team in this tournament.

Group D:
Hart Foundation vs Hollywood Blonds
Megapowers vs Guerrillas of Destiny
Steamboat and Youngblood vs. Fabulous Rougeau Brothers
The Mulkeys vs The Dudley Boyz
World's Greatest Tag Team vs the Islanders
Team Hell No! vs The Outsiders
Wild Samoans vs Demolition
Edge and Christian vs the Freebirds

Ending this one with a bang.

#1-norm-fan 07-28-2022 10:53 PM

You should make note of which Hollywood Blondes team got in.

Bad News Gertner 07-28-2022 11:02 PM

Demolition are fucking trash

Destor 07-28-2022 11:05 PM

Freedbirds are gonna get wrecked and i take that personally

#1-norm-fan 07-28-2022 11:06 PM

I don’t think I can vote against The Mulkeys after all we’ve been through over the past year. It would be like betraying family.

Vastardikai 07-28-2022 11:36 PM

The Blonds were great, but weren't together long enough to be legendary. The Hart Foundation is just a legendary team, with Neidhart's Coke-infused promos and Bret being good at wrestling in a time where being "Good at Wrestling" could be legitimately used as a gimmick (instead of now, when EVERYONE is "Good at Wrestling," so no one is.)

I voted for Guerrillaz of Destiny because, for one thing, "Fuck You!" (GoD, EVERY match they're in) and also, I knew they'd get squashed, so I had to give them at least one vote. Also, their dad is behind me and I want to live.

went with Steamboat and Youngblood because they were a solid team in their day, and because while the Ragu Sisters (credit: Demolition) were amazing in Montreal, and had a solid mid-tier run during 80s WWF, they weren't on top, like Ricky and Jay. They did have one of my favorite theme songs. The Quebecers had a good one, as well. Fun fact: the first third Generation wrestling stars in WWF were in fact Jacques and Raymond Rougeau.

I fully expect the Dudley Boyz to win, but Mulkey-mania is running wild. I did include them as a joke entry more than anything else. That said, I just want the Mulkey's to win and maybe, just maybe, they get the Young Bucks in Round 2. Then I am sure they will get to Round 3.

Since Haku is behind me, and I am living in fear, I went with the Islanders. Nothing against the World's Greatest Tag Team, but they would get beaten and parts of them may end up missing.

In a battle of Superteams, I had to go with the Outsiders. Hall and Nash were vital to the '90s wrestling boom. And, while it made Kane feel interesting for the first time in over a decade and actually made Bryan matter to casual fans, they just don't hold a candle.

Wild Samoans are a legendary tag team. They were so good at beating up heels in San Francisco as fans, they had to be let into the business. I voted for Demolition for one reason: they were one of my favorite teams growing up. They were considered rip offs of the Road Warriors, but they were better workers.

The lesser version of the Freebirds versus a team that was compared to them at one point. As much as Edge and Christian Reek of Awesomeness. Michael Hayes helped pioneer the Rock n Wrestling era. "Badstreet USA" is easily one of the best theme songs of all time, and he could talk with the best of them. Jimmy Garvin, while no Buddy Roberts or Terry Gordy, was pretty good in his own right. Hindsight being what it is, I would have went with Hayes and Gordy and used a different team that may have drawn the death spot against the Midnights. Ah well. Still went with the Birds.

MULKEYS ALL THE WAY OR THIS ERECTION IS RIGGED

weather vane 07-28-2022 11:41 PM

Demolition FTW.

Not sure if the last string of posts are in english or ive had a seizure

#1-norm-fan 07-29-2022 12:39 AM

Not wanting your rival to kill themselves IS definitely loser mentality though.

#1-norm-fan 07-29-2022 12:40 AM

Unless it’s because you wanna do the job yourself, but I don’t think that’s the case here.

weather vane 07-29-2022 02:30 AM

whoa

Mr. Nerfect 07-29-2022 03:15 AM

I voted for one match-up twice (thought I removed it). Can you please subtract 1 for the Rougeaus. I went Steamboat/Youngblood.

Mr. Nerfect 07-29-2022 03:17 AM

I know I should go Freebirds, but I just can’t go past Edge & Christian. Sorry, Destor.

Fignuts 07-29-2022 08:49 AM

Jesus fucking christ

PMs for fuck's sake

Evil Vito 07-29-2022 08:50 AM

Well there's sure a whole lot of stupid shit in this thread.

I didn't find this round too challenging. I figured Team Hell No would be the biggest losing side I voted for (not too surprising they're down 10-5 as of now) but man I'm a sucker for a good odd couple team. All 4 men in that match were more enjoyable as solo guys anyway.

Evil Vito 07-29-2022 08:54 AM

It'll be fascinating to me to see how the Mega Powers go. Obviously this first round against GOD was a lay-up (plz don't hurt me Haku).

Mega Powers had the biggest combined star power ever but ultimately the team was a vehicle for a prolific split angle and WM main event. It'll invariably get to the point where it's two of the biggest single stars in history vs. an established, excellent tag team everyone likes. All comes down to what metrics the voters feel are the most important to make that kind of decision. Will be fun.

#1-norm-fan 07-29-2022 09:47 AM

I actually thought Team Hell No would be doing better on account of Bryan and recent bias.

#1-norm-fan 07-29-2022 09:52 AM

And in all serious, The Mulkeys WERE actually good at their job. They deserve some legit recognition.

Bad News Gertner 07-29-2022 09:52 AM

E&C vs Freebirds was very tough. I'm really not a Micheal Hayes fan but Buddy and Terry are amazing.

drave 07-29-2022 09:53 AM

Christian sucks, so it was a handicap match.

Edge sucks just a lil bit less.

Bad News Gertner 07-29-2022 09:53 AM

Really surprised the Islanders are beating WGTT

Heel Islanders fucking rule though

2000 E&C were so entertaining.

Sepholio 07-29-2022 09:55 AM

I thought I had a post about E&C vs Freebirds in here. Guess I dreamt it.

drave 07-29-2022 09:55 AM

Fair enough, but it stops there.

I still remember the one segment that made me laugh pretty good, and it really is the epitome of E&C. They were sitting in the back and Edge says "You know the best thing about my boots?? They say EDGE on them"

Think this was at the height of the kazoo//sunglasses//5 second pose era.

drave 07-29-2022 09:56 AM

The Kazoo was more over than Christian. Bring back Kazoo Christian and you have a champ champ.

Bad News Gertner 07-29-2022 09:59 AM

It's interesting that hardly any teams from that era had tag finishers.

E&C
Hardyz
NAO
Kaientai
Owen and Jarrett
Brown and Henry
APA had a double powerbomb but rarely used it. Was usually Clothesline From Hell
The Hollys
T&A

I'm sure I'm missing a couple

Sepholio 07-29-2022 10:01 AM

Did anyone really have a tag finisher other than the Dudleys in that era?

Bad News Gertner 07-29-2022 10:06 AM

Too Cool
Lo Down lol
Headbangers
Head Cheese
DOA
L.O.D

Man, I know the logistics would be really fucky..... but could you imagine a Ron Simmons Spine Buster + JBL Clothesline From Hell Combo?

oof

Bad News Gertner 07-29-2022 10:16 AM

It's doable to the point where I fear for the wrestler taking it in my head lol

drave 07-29-2022 10:16 AM

Or, you could even have Farooq lift up for the dominator, but hold them up at the top of the slam, and have JBL clothesline them as they start to go back down or something like that.

Clothesline from hell always looked better on it's own, but damn....

Sepholio 07-29-2022 10:16 AM

drave over here just imagining murders

Loose Cannon 07-29-2022 10:20 AM

NJPW tag team. They've held the IWGP Tag Titles a record 7 times, but tbf the tag division in New Japan has long stretches of being a lazily booked afterthought. They're kinda just the default champions when they don't know who else to put the titles on.

Easily G.O.D's best moment.
