Metallica at Download
Just had a call sayin Lars had gone into hospital, and that replacement drummers were playing, apparently Dave Lombardo of Slayer and Joey Jordason(sp) from Slipknot have been filling in.
I'm not actually there (wishes I was) but I'm sure the guys that were there will fill you in, in this topic. |
Damn. Metallica without Lars might be worth hearing live, too.
 at the irony of Metallica at the Download Festival. |
I heard that festival is a pure mess. Soil had a bus crash yesterday and no showed and some other band (think Cradle of Filth) just didn't bother showing at all.

It was Static X

Oh, I talked to Harkore U.K earlier and he said that Slayers Crew didn't turn up and that they had to play the second stage.

Oh yeah, shit, Kerry King is the Guitarist and Dave Lombardo is the drummer, got them mixed up

Lombardo would be 1000x better then Lars, and Jordinson is a step up also.

The Drums that Should Not be...
A rundown of the cockups today:
Ill Nino take the stage as Turbonegro get stuck in traffic. Turbonegro play a very good set. Soulfly take the stage, shortly after we hear that while Slayer there, they are without a crew, and have been moved to the 2nd stage. Machinehead take Slayer's spot on the festival, while Hatebreed play Machineheads slot. Luckily, Drowning Pool's set went ahead as planned, and were joined by Soil for a band duet of Halo. By the time Slipknot take the stage, things seem to have sorted themselves out. The times are running a little late, but smoothly nonetheless. Until Metallica fail to take the stage. Finally, at about 9:45-10:00 (with no previous explanation as to the whereabouts of 'tallica), we hear James Hetfield explain that Lars had been taken to the hospital, and they've been looking for a drummer. Slayer's Dave Lombardo took over for the first song (Battery). Then they were joined by still masked Joey Jordison (best choice IMO, he's an awesome drummer and didn't put a stick wrong.) After a set that comprised of The Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Wherever I may Roam, Nothing Else Matters, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and some punk shit, probably off of the later albums. (Not in that order, I was recalling the songs as I typed them) THEN, the icing on the cake, we leave for the exit to realise the Showsec rocket scientists decide to close the exit we were leaving by right in front of us. After a standing protest and a shout of "OPEN THESE FU</>CKING GATES" we were allowed out. (Until roadworks got the better of us leaving Donington) --EDIT-- I've heard on the Download forums that Creeping Death was played. I honestly don't remember it if it was. |

The Ill Nino/Turbonegro thing was true yes, but Hatebreed playing Machine Head's previous slot? Cuz I swore I saw DamagePlan play! Unless Hatebreed/DamagePlan are 6 and two 3's? Slayer being set back for another hour was another cock up, after the first cock up, they were swapped with Taking Back Sunday and thus played after them. Taking Back Sunday...oh dear. Yeah, Metallica did do Creeping Death, Hetfield fu</>cked up after the "Die, die, die" bit :D It was a challenge to overcome for Metallica really, and I feel they overcame it and put on a good show, shame the set list was about 1 hour short. EDIT: Joey and Lombardo were amazing replacements, but I was actually expecting Vinnie Paul of DamagePlan to play rather than Lombardo. Still, they played extremely well. |

Joey Jordison Plays for Metallica @ Download
Posted By: Saving Purity Date: 06 Jun 2004 "Rock history was made today as METALLICA seized triumph from the jaws of disaster, after drummer Lars Ulrich was hospitalised with a mystery ailment, on the day of their headline performance at the second day of the Download Festival. "Whereas lesser bands would fold in the face of such adversity, METALLICA were not going to let this little setback spoil the party. "A frantic backstage call for arms (and sticks) rallied an impressive contingent of troops from other artists on today's line-up, all ready and willing to do their bit for the 'TALLICA, and a secret spur-of-the-moment rehearsal/audition was held in the band's dressing room to decide a set-list! "The crowd were not informed of the crisis unfolding backstage, and patience was beginning to wear thin after the band had failed to appear, more than an hour after their due time, evoking the festive chant of 'You're shit!' "At around 10pm, the 'Ecstacy of Gold' intro music kicked in, and the boos became frenzied cheers. These soon faded, as the three emerging band members walked solemnly to the front of the stage. Singer James Hetfield was quick to get to the point. " 'We would like to apologise for being so late to start, but only three of us made it down here to Donington today. Unfortunately our drummer, Lars, is in hospital. We don't know what's wrong, but we wish him all the best. Some friends of ours are gonna help us out, so we're going to make rock history tonight!' "First in the hot seat was SLAYER's Dave Lombardo, much to the crowd's obvious delight, as the band kicked off with an apprehensive 'Battery', and just about pulled it off, with a lot of nodding from Hetfield and bassist Rob Trujillo. Next up was SLIPKNOT's Joey Jordison, and then something magical happened. Surging into 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', the remaining band members were unable to contain their smiles as it quickly became apparent that the small, demure figure behind the kit was not so much their salvation, as their hero of the day. "As his confidence grew, Jodison began to add his own flavour, improvising thundering fills over 'Creeping Death' and 'Seek and Destroy', much to the glee of beaming guitarist Kirk Hammett. After a brief and not-entirely-successful attempt by drum tech Flemming to cover on a ropey 'Fade to Black', plans to bring on LIFE OF AGONY's Sal Abruscato and bring back Lombardo and Flemming were swiftly aborted. METALLICA had found their drummer for the night! "After what will long be remembered as a truly legendary performance, a clearly shell-shocked Jordison staggered off-stage to an emotional reunion with his unmasked SLIPKNOT bandmates, proclaiming 'You just made rock history, dude!' He just did." Thanks Blabbermouth |
Picked up a Kerrang today. In its review of Donington, it shows a picture of Lars Ulrich being taken away by medical staff, proving that he was at the venue.
We were in the car park (we went into the VIP car park as no-one was checking for passes) and whilst we were enjoying an barbeque during KoRn's set, we saw a man looking pretty sick being taken away by helicopters. Makes me start to believe it may have been Lars. |
They claimed he was in hospital in Germany though...
|
I gotta see a Metallica's set now, see/hear how well joey done.
