Best War movies...

So, what's your favorite war movies? I like Saving Private Ryan of course, Hamburger Hill, Patton, and I guess Tora!Tora!Tora! would be some of my favorites.

Um the only war type movie I ever enjoyed was Apolcalypse Now. And I didn't even completely enjoy it.

Would you call Forrest Gump a type of war movie?

DaveWadding 06-08-2004 11:59 AM

All's Quiet on the Western Front

DaveWadding 06-08-2004 12:00 PM

Cold Mountain also had alot to do with the Civil War...but I doubt that counts.

The Mackem 06-08-2004 12:24 PM

Longest Day
Battle of the bulge
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
A Bridge too far
Great Escape
Hamburger Hill
Thin Red Line
Stalingrad

Cyke 06-08-2004 02:32 PM

Grave of the Fireflies. Sure, it's an anime, but unlike most war movies, it focuses on the difficulties of surviving the war from the point of view of Japanese orphans. It's a really sad, touching film.

As for live action flicks, I enjoyed Full Metal Jacket immensely, though I thought it to be two different movies embedded into one, yet somehow works from a realistic perspective.

Saving Private Ryan

Danny Electric 06-08-2004 02:42 PM

I liked The Thin Red Line.

Triple A 06-08-2004 02:48 PM

Full Metal Jacket is the best war movie ever.

Paths of Glory is also fucking amazing.

The Miz 06-08-2004 03:39 PM

The Mackem 06-08-2004 03:43 PM

I've never come across Paths of Glory before, going to google it.

The Mackem 06-08-2004 03:45 PM

Hmm Kubrick, World War 1, examples made out of soldiers who won't take part in a suicidal attack might have to check that one out.

Triple A 06-08-2004 04:31 PM

It's great, definitely watch it. First time I saw it, I was blown away.

The One 06-08-2004 05:37 PM

Deer Hunter is also a phenominal movie.

Has anyone seen both versions of Apocalypse Now? Cus I saw the Redux...maybe that's why I didn't like certain parts.

Boondock Saint 06-09-2004 04:08 AM

Pretty much everything that has been mentioned plus:

The Dirty Dozen

I love war movies but preferably WWII

Triple A 06-09-2004 04:13 AM

I thought Apocalypse Now was pretty fucking boring.

The Mackem 06-09-2004 04:18 AM

I forgot about We Were soldiers and Tigerland. :(

CHARLIE DON'T SURF!

The redux has just got bits added in that weren't left in the original. Like when they steal the Colonel's (or whatever rank he is) surfboard. There's a bit where they're on the boat in the jungle hiding from a helicopter playing a recorded message from him wanting his board back. The other bit that's obvious is where they meet up with the playgirls a while after the USO show.

Xen0ciDe 06-09-2004 04:19 AM

Das Boot
The Great Escape
A Bridge Too Far
The Guns of Navarone
Patton

Those are all the ones I own.. Don't really feel like thinking of more during finals week lol.

Try reading the book :D: Heart of Darkness. Fabulous book, amazingly well written but god I wish I never read it, it's a task to read.
