Ricky Williams of the Miami Dolphins Retiring!

This is just shocking but according to ESPN and Dan Le Batard of the Miami Herald, Ricky Williams has grown tired of football and is set to retire. The Dolphins will do whatever it takes to get him back but Le Batard believes that Williams will stick with his decision.

This is just going to be a huge blow to the Dolphins. Ricky is a top 5 back and I have no idea why he is retiring.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 07-25-2004 04:10 AM

LOL

Patriots folks

CNM 07-25-2004 04:11 AM

Damn, this came out of the blue. This should end the Dolphins/Super Bowl talk.

Apprentice 07-25-2004 04:13 AM

Seriously. I just saw it on the 10pm(west coast) sportscenter. There was no talk of this at all earlier in the day.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 07-25-2004 04:26 AM

He never really seemed to care that much about football, sorta seemed like he was just because of his crazy talent. Like he had the feeling that he HAD to play just becuase he was gifted talent-wise. I dunno tho it is a big blow for the NFL IMO. I can't stand the Dolphins but the NFL is losing a pretty big marquee player. Its too bad, if he could have stayed healthy he would have probably been one of the best of all time. He had on really good year, the only year he was healthy and had a good team around him. I think if he had more years like that he would be up there with the greats.

But being a Patriots fan I am glad to see him go, even though the Dolphins always choke at the end of the season anyways

I agree. He had loads of potential and was just hitting his prime. Now that division is a joke and the Pats are gonna run away with it. I have no idea who their backup is and if there are any serviceable running backs out in free agency. I don't even think they will compete for the playoffs now. At least Miami has the basketball season to look forward to.

The Miz 07-25-2004 04:32 AM

WTF

KingofOldSchool 07-25-2004 04:59 AM

LOL

WOW

The Colts are lucky.

They took Manning over Leaf. Look what happened to Leaf.

They took James over Williams. Now look at Williams.

Damn this has shocked the hell out of me.

road doggy dogg 07-25-2004 05:15 AM

MESSED. UP.

Travis Minor or something, Pretty sure he was the starter before Williams. I mean hes servicable but no where near Williams. Maybe they can get in on Eddie George sweepstakes (He mighta already signed with Dal.) Or maybe Antoine Smith (coulda signed with Titans though)

#1-norm-fan 07-25-2004 09:26 AM

Yeah, Eddie George already signed with Dallas.

WTF... Ricky Williams. Un-Be-Lievable.

VonErich Lives 07-25-2004 11:18 AM

He was quoting as saying he's "never felt so free", he was on some trip w/ visitng people in huts and said he couldn't believe how these people we're so free or something like that...

It's not final till he files, also keep in mind he failed a 2nd drug test for marijuana and faced fine and possible suspension.

This hurts the Phins, they'll have to try and make a trade w/ someone... I'd assume the likely target is Buffallo, even though it's in division, the Bills have 2 RB's, there not going to feature 2, and if you can get a 1st round pick....

Being a Buffalo fan, i know with pretty good certainty that the Bills wouldn't trade Henry or McGahee this year, especially to the Phins. Buffalo want's to see how McGahee's knee is this year and at that point (probably next year) they will trade one of them.

Crimson 07-25-2004 02:18 PM

Very surprising, I hope he reconsiders. Hopefully it was like a 'feel good at the moment' type of decision. But if his heart isn't in the game then maybe it's better for him.

KingofOldSchool 07-25-2004 03:22 PM

They always can take a chance to get someone like Larry Johnson or maybe Arlen Harris. If Harris plays like he did last season while filling in for Faulk he could be a good pickup.

The Outlaw 07-25-2004 03:25 PM

What the...

This came out of left field.

YOUR Hero 07-25-2004 04:01 PM

pussy.

AlphaBean 07-25-2004 04:55 PM

Holy shit. Trade Ogunleye to the Vikings for a HB.

Zen v.W.o. 07-25-2004 05:02 PM

...

Nah trade somebody to the giants. We got dayne and tiki. Dayne might be better off elsewhere.

Talked to my brother down in Florida this morning and that's the early rumor is trading Ogunleye, since he's a restricted free agent, has threatened to hold out and wants 6yrs is only being offerd 3yrs.

Boomer 07-25-2004 07:09 PM

It was so wierd, I was watching Sportscenter last night in ATL, and it said nothing. I get up 8 hours later, and its the top headline. I think he's nuts. Seriously.

VonErich Lives 07-25-2004 08:03 PM

ya know... if he had said... I'm young, healthy and can live w/o ever having to work again...

That would be different.

But it seems it's pressure forcing him out...

Now, once away, will he get the "itch" again? will it be another Jordan who keeps coming back?

Barry Sanders walked away short of a record, but he had been doing it for a lot longer.

I still wouldn't be shocked if they talk him out of it.

MVP 07-25-2004 08:43 PM

So now Johnson feels free and has traveled to Asia where he's going to remain for many months.

Anyone want to bet he returns next year as Mohammed Willi?

VonErich Lives 07-25-2004 09:51 PM

So... let's check here...

no RB.
Azk Thomas off surgery
McMichael facing battery charges

I wonder what that did to the Vegas lines..

VonErich Lives 07-26-2004 02:34 PM

listeing to the guy who broke the story.

Said he'd been talking about it all offseason but was going to finish the year for his teammates, but said he couldn't take another year of the physical punishment for someone else.

There talking now how sports are put a higher level, that if someone leaves their job, people don't get the same treatment.

They all agree is timing is selfish, and that williams knows this, but doesn't care because he wants to do something for himself.

one quote I found interesting is Williams has never liked the NFL being allowed to say what he can and can't put in his body... I assume thats talking about smoking weed.

Supreme Olajuwon 07-26-2004 06:24 PM

He sounds like a quitter to me

Gonzo 07-26-2004 06:28 PM

Yeah, assuming he is talking about weed, it isn't the NFL. It is the law you know...

Mayo 07-27-2004 04:52 PM

I am a huge Dolphins fan, and this pisses the shit out of me. He could have at least done it a month ago so that we could have gotten Eddie George or Antowain Smith. I hear the Fins are going after Stacy Mack or James Stewart since they are free agents, or they could stick with Travis Minor. Now that they have a lot of salary cap room, they better make a huge trade or signing to improve. They haven't made many moves at all this offseason

Was Williams still under his original contract or had he redone it? Cause if he had a new one, there going to want back some signing bonus money and the cap will be screwy, like when Sanders retired.

Not sure about that. They better sign somebody quickly though.

VonErich Lives 07-27-2004 07:08 PM

There was talk of shipping Ogunleye to Chicago for A-train, but Chicago says they don't want to part w/ A-train...

Dunno, seems like a decent deals for both sides...

Gonzo 07-27-2004 07:27 PM

Especially with Chi-Town's acquisition of Thomas Jones.

Crimson 07-28-2004 12:35 AM

Mortensen said this wouldn't hit the Dolphins in the salary cap so they'll have some money to play with. Why the fuck wouldn't the Bears make that trade , Urlacher needs help, plus with those 2 rookie D-ineman they would improve drastically on defense.

Excellance of Execution 07-28-2004 12:40 AM

Good for Ricky!!! It's easy for us sports fans to knock the guy for walking away from a sport that he's good at. Expecially since a lot of people have him on their fantasy football teams. The bottom line is, it is his life and he has the right to do what he wants with it. If he doesn't want to play football anymore, than that is his choice and his choice alone.

VonErich Lives 07-28-2004 04:10 PM

being reports he has to pay the Phins back 8mil in signining bonus.

Wonder if that changes his mind... he had a horrible contract his first few years w/ New Orleans...

VonErich Lives 07-28-2004 05:08 PM

also, the only trade rumor I've heard more then once from more then one source...

Edgerian James to Miami.

Bill Polian released a statement "no trade" and no truth to the rumors... but you gotta look at it.

Edge grew up and played college ball in Miami, lives there and spends most the off-season there.

Now, look at the Colts, Edge and Harrison are both free agents at years end, they can't afford both (good job on your contract Manning) so, why not get something for Edge before he walks? I doubt they'd keep edge over Harrison, I mean.. the idea of letting go of one of the best WR's in the league when you have all that money tied up in your QB doesn't make a lot of sense...

KingofOldSchool 07-28-2004 06:02 PM

Then again it's the Colts you are talking about.

Oh btw...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...stevens/040728

KingofOldSchool 07-28-2004 06:05 PM

Ya know...Miami can still get Ricky Williams to play for them this season.

The Colts' Ricky Williams...:shifty:

VonErich Lives 07-28-2004 08:37 PM

I still don't think he's filed yet... who knows... he was going to play this season for his "teammates" but now who knows...

I still wouldn't be shocked to see him back before the pre-seasons over...

VonErich Lives 07-29-2004 04:29 PM

** Ex-Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams told The Miami Herald’s Dan Le Batard that he found out in the days leading up to his retirement that he tested positive for marijuana would have to serve a 4-game suspension. According to the article, Williams admitted that marijuana played a larger role in retirement than he originally indicated. Ricky’s biggest complaint is that he doesn’t feel the government nor the NFL should ban his wonder joints. ''I didn't quit football because I failed a drug test,'' he said. ``I failed a drug test because I was ready to quit football.''
