What is the best sports city?

What do you guys think is the best sports city in America? Sporting News did an article on it and placed Boston at number 1. I can see that with the Patriots winning and the Red Sox contending. Here's the top 10.

1. Boston - Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics
2. Oakland-San Francisco-San Jose - Raiders, 49ers, Giants, A's, Sharks, Warriors
3. New York-Long Island-New Jersey - Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Giants, Jets (does New York really need 2 teams per sport?)
4. Houston - Rockets, Astros, Texans
5. Los Angeles-Anaheim - Lakers, Clippers, Ducks, Kings, Dodgers, Angels
6. Miami-Fort Lauderdale - Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, Panthers
7. Detroit - Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Red Wings
8. Dallas-Fort Worth - Cowboys, Mavs, Rangers(sorta)
9. Philadelphia - 76ers, Phillies, Eagles, Flyers
10. Minneapolis-St. Paul - Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves, Wild

I think Chicago should be in the top 10 and Los Angeles should be above Houston.

It's going to be biased opinions all around with people picking the City they are from. Well unless you leave in Idaho or something.

BCWWF 08-12-2004 09:54 PM

I was going to mention the Sporting News thing, but thats how you got the idea. Anyway, I think that was based more on team success than anything else. If you are going to base it just on success then Boston would be the winner for last year, but if I did it I would base it on fan support and other things.

If I was going to chose I would chose based on what city I would most like to go to for the sporting atmosphere. Boston would definately be up there, Seattle aswell, Chicago, and Denver. There are a lot of real cool college cities too, but I'm too lazy to keep typing.

edit: misundestood :o

Detroit's a good pick I'd say.... Pistons and Red Wings are good, Lions are getting there ( ) and Tigers are even picking up their game a bit...

Has more to do with just the 4 teams IMO

Very true. Look at the Miami Heat last year. There's nobody ever there at their games and they were good last year too! If they don't even go to see Shaq, then they are really stupid.

King Chrös III 08-13-2004 01:49 AM

What, you no likey the Thunder?

Loose Cannon 08-13-2004 01:53 AM

Well, I've only been to Stadiums in NY and New Jersey. My cousin invited me up to Bean Town a couple of times to go to Fenway, but I'm always busy.

Yea but it still does have some importance. If every team in the city sucks, its hard to make a case for it as a great sports city. I think its a combination of teams, fans, support from ownership, history and just having a fun time at the sporting events in that city. I think thats it... I'm probably forgetting something... but thats at least the basis.

King Chrös III 08-13-2004 02:08 AM

Theres a bunch of messed up criteria, like: There either has to be a college with a d-1 football team or else an NFL training camp in the city. Random qualifications like that. Mankato, Minnesota is on there randomly, and its just like a nothing town.

AlphaBean 08-13-2004 04:48 PM

Minnesota OWNS college hockey. Suck on that. :wiggle:

BCWWF 08-13-2004 05:21 PM

Especially womens college hockey, I'm pretty sure a Minnesota team has won the NCAA title in the past like 10 years (UMD or U of M). Too bad nobody cares about womens college hockey :meh:

AlphaBean 08-13-2004 09:00 PM

Gophers women are the reigning WCHA champs.

The Gopher men were the back-to-back champions, and there were THREE minnesota hockey teams in the top 10 in college hockey this year.

Plus we had a ranked baseball team, our football team is nationally ranked (but will choke), with the best 1-2 punch in the nation, according to some experts. BARBER AND MARONEY

Volleyball team I believe is up there, and our wrestling team reigned supreme for about five years with Brock in the mix. This last year I think we didn't do anything, but one of the wrestlers was the best in the nation. Nothing to brag about, but whateverrrrrr.

Anyway, MN still sucks.

ESPECIALLY college hoops. :(

Gertner 08-13-2004 11:57 PM

If the damn Raptors and Blue Jays were any good, Toronto should be up there.

BCWWF 08-14-2004 04:19 AM

I think the Gophers football is underranked right now, but at least Missouri is top 15, I can smell a Big 12 title game against Oklahoma baby!

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-14-2004 04:28 AM

What about Kansas St?

BCWWF 08-14-2004 04:39 AM

We'll beat 'em. Our new transfer running back tells me so :shifty: I forget if we have them at home or away, but either way what a good matchup.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-14-2004 04:41 AM

Atleast you won't have to worry about Nebraska...Guys recruited for the Option offense playing in the West Coast scheme :-\

Detroitian 08-14-2004 12:09 PM

Detroit :y: :y: :y:

:shifty:

Kind of obvious, I think..

Because its based on team success, home records, etc.
