NEW YORK - Two major movie theater chains are adding 25 cents to the price of a ticket in the city, pushing the cost of adult admission above the $10 mark for the first time.



Loews Cineplex and United Artists began charging $10.25 for an adult's ticket and $6.75 for a child's ticket in the past week as moviegoers crowded theaters for holiday blockbusters such as "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."


Loews defended the price increase, saying it was fair considering the rising costs of other entertainment and the rate of inflation.


"In comparison to other entertainment options, movie ticket prices are modest and remain one of the most affordable out-of-home entertainment activities," Loews spokesman John McCauley said Monday.


Ticket prices at the Loews 34th Street theater in Manhattan will remain at $8.99 because the company wants to attract people to its newest venue.


The United Artists Union Square theater increased its prices by 25 cents on Dec. 19. It was the first increase at that theater in more than three years.

That's pretty ****ed. We have ours down here at around $6.50.

Of course, the price has been going up gradually.

I say that if they're going to jack up the movie prices, then drop the concession stand prices because they are ****ing ridiculous.

Over here to see a movie and one of the "good theatres" it will cost you around $13.00 for adults and about a half of that for kids.

If you go to on eof the " not so good/el-cheapo" theatres it'll cost ya $4.25 per person till like 7:00p.m.

Hell, for that price, I would go to the shitty theatres.

This is why I usually wait till movies come out on video.

$5.50 with a student discount (college town, though). Not sure what regular prices are.

10-13.50 depending on the theater.

Popcorn is 3 bucks a back, pop is 3 bucks a cup, bottled water is 2.50.

I smuggle my snacks in though :cool:

They're usually not the new releases either. The second runs or movies that are on video.

7.50 for adults, not sure for kids at the "expensive" theater.
1.50 at the shitty theater.

$9.00 adult. Not sure how much kids are though. But shows before 6pm, are "matinees" and so are $6.35...around that I believe

Here it costs $6 before 6 pm and $9 after 6.

Then at the other theater, they have movies that aren't on video yet but aren't in normal theaters either. It's only $4.50 allday but on Tuesdays it's buy one ticket, get one free.

It's $7.50 for adults, and kids are $5 I think.

We have 1.50 theatres for older movies.

11 bucks Aus. for an adult. It's the candy bar prices that are criminal.

Soda runs about 3 bucks here, too, but for the quantity, it's pretty cost-effective to just get a nice, cold soda at the theater. They do it in like, big jumbo cups. It'd be like 25 cents cheaper to smuggle it in, but it's just not worth a shaken bottle of now half-warm soda.

7.50/5.00 or 8.50/6.50 US here, depending on which theater. Second price is the matinee/special discount night price (One of them has a discount night wednesday...I go Tuesday instead. No crowd). The cheaper one is the nicer one, with Air conditioning, state of the art surround sound, decent prices and such, but the more expensive one gets a lot of the better or bigger movies. The LotR series, the Star Wars series, the Hulk, T3, and a lot of the arthaus and foreign films. Tey had Brotherhood of the Wolf, even if it was in a theater the size of a shoebox.

large popcorn and pepsi is £5.15, which isn't awful I guess.

I bought a can of orange though after ROTK cuase all the concession stands were shut... £1.90 WTF.

I guess I am just going to go see movies I really, really want to see. I am also pretty sure it is also discouraging to families to take their children to see a movie with these prices. The pay down here is awful. Minimum wage is still 5.15.

You do know trips to the movies are a luxury item, recreation, right?

Things like movie tickets generally don't factor into the considerations for minimum wage.

Similarly, movie theaters are primarily a draw for people with a lot (Or reasonable ammount) of dispoable income. Therefore, minimum wage generally factors into the cost of tickets very little. Factors like expenses of the theater, desire to not lose money, charges the film industries require to use the film, those things matter.

There's a theater down the road from me that shows second-run movies for a buck, 1.50 on weekend, and the theater itself is one of the best in the area that doesn't have like stadium seating and stuff. The first-run theater I usually go to is 8, with 5.25 matinee prices. The Loews in the area is like 9.50. I've only ever been there once, and that was with a free pass.

The big name chain theaters are like 10 but the family run theaters are like 4 and they have the best movies anyway

Well where I live one guy Warren owns like 6 theatres and they have reasonable prices. The 3 main ones Warren Theatres are like $7 for adults,his Movie Machine is $4.50 for adults,Palace East is also $7 and Palace West is $2 all the time but its shows the less recent ones like bout to come out on DVD and often already on DVD movies.

Jesus christ, all these $10-$13 prices are mind blowing.

Luckily I live in a small town, and it's $4.50 before 6pm and $6.50 after 6pm.
