Haha, fuck P.Diddy

A federal appeals court has ruled that all musical samples must now be paid for, ending the free reign that many artists, especially rappers, had in using past hits to serve as foundations to new tracks.

Artists will now have to pay for ALL samples, even tiny snippets.

"Get a license or do not sample," the court said Tuesday. "We do not see this as stifling creativity in any significant way."

The case was based on the 1990 NWA song 100 Miles and Runnin' which featured a sample from the 1975 song Get Off Your Ass and Jam.

asphyXy 09-09-2004 12:59 AM

It's about time.

Gertner 09-09-2004 01:03 AM

that's so stupid. everybody is gonna be sueing everybody. Metal artists might as well start suring each other, since every song sounds the exact same.

asphyXy 09-09-2004 01:14 AM

You are so right, Gertner.

What is your favorite genre, by the way?

Downunder 09-09-2004 03:16 AM

ha ha now they have to learn to play their own instruments

Funky Fly 09-09-2004 03:20 PM

Gertner and DU, stop being cocks. Gertner probably likes likes shit they play at raves, since he is/was an ecstasy freak.

Downunder, have you ever heard of The Roots? They are rappers who play instruments. There are also many other rappers and producers who can play actual instruments (Kanye West, Andre 3000 of Outcast, etc).

It's mostly only the mainstream bullshit "artists" on the radio who can't. Next time I find you on Soulseek, I'm gonna show you the light.

DaveWadding 09-09-2004 03:21 PM

Talib Kweli = The Light

Gertner 09-09-2004 04:41 PM

I like Trance

el fregadero 09-09-2004 04:42 PM

lol

Gertner 09-09-2004 04:44 PM

and progressive, but mostly hard trance. and i'm not an ecstasy freak anymore. just an occasional user.

el fregadero 09-09-2004 04:47 PM

That Vietnamese Crippler guy listens to trance, so I don't know how good it is.

Gertner 09-09-2004 04:49 PM

It's one of those things that you either love it, or hate it. I listen to to constantly.

Outsider 09-09-2004 06:45 PM

Haha, fuck rap

I haven't seen Kayne West pick up an instrument yet.

And nobody is saying they can't play instruments. Poofy Daddy can be an excellent Viomalin or Tumababa player for all I know. He isn't making records with those sounds so who cares.

MVP 09-09-2004 10:20 PM

Oh man, and I was looking forward to the next Eminem/Dido collaboration.

Penner 09-09-2004 11:13 PM

eg. Beatnuts - Watch Out Now

I feel like everyone has sampled that song.

He plays some of the instruments in his production. Read the credits for the 908567890765309786 albums he has done production on. He's not in the video for like 99% of the songs he's produced.

Yeah, he's been hot for years as far as production.

Oh, and for those who don't know, 90% of all rappers get their samples cleared.

Rob 09-12-2004 09:05 AM

90% eh? Where did that number come from?

It came out of my ass.

In this day and age of lawsuits, it's pretty uncommon to hear lawsuits over sampling or not crediting other people, etc. It still happens, but most people in the music biz are trying to make some cash, and prefer to do so without having to split it because they ripped someone else off.
