WWE Possibly Doing a Muslim Character

This is from the BetweentheRopes.com Radio Show.

The WWE might be planning on doing a heel Muslim character on WWE TV. Mark Mangus, who is from OVW, will be the guy given the character. A link to his profile is at the bottom of the page if you want to see what he looks like.

Magnus will play Muhammad Hussan (sp) and he will also have a Muslim manager by his side.

Right now, Magnus is doing this on House Shows and could be called up to eathier Raw or Smackdown in the future.

Well for me personally, I don't get offended by these things at all. I actually liked the Slaughter Character in the 90's, liked the Iron Shiek from the 80's. They get cheap, but its going to be some big FK'N heat. Like they said on the show, a lot of people in this country are not to big on Muslims right now to put it lightly, so you have to worry about the safety of Magnus. There are still people out there that take wrestling serious and this character could get some people riled up.

Here is the profile for Magnus. http://www.wrestlinginformer.net/mark_magnus.htm

You're right, it will garner PLEANTY of heat... He'll most likely be one of the most sucessful heels in years when it comes to heel heat, but it could backfire and harm Mangun, professionally and/or personally... But I doubt it...

Corkscrewed 10-01-2004 07:38 PM

Just give him Viscera as his Operation Human Shield. :shifty:

Sensei Of Mattitude 10-01-2004 07:42 PM

I could definitely see him on Smackdown fueding against the UNITED STATES CHAMPION John Cena

Loose Cannon 10-01-2004 07:54 PM

I would throw him on Raw in a second. Raw is the show where you can push buttons and with this character, there is a lot of buttons to push. As long as they don't go too far, it's all good. I can really see this character getting people talking to where people will tell people to tune is.

Thing is, the WWE has to go all out here. They can't worry about people getting offended anymore. This is part of why the business kind of sucks right now. They're worried about offending other people and you just can't do that in wrestling. You have to push buttons sometimes.

Example in 99 when Austin was "crucified." That offended a lot of people right? But hey, they talked about it in the TV Guide, on those News Shows, in the Paper. It got people talking. Ratings were pretty big back then. Even my mom, who never watched wrestling in her life heard what happend and was like "That should not be on TV."

Hey, it might of been out of taste, but it worked in getting attention. I'm not saying go out there and make the Muslim guy talk about anything related to the war in Iraq or anything related to terrorism, but don't make him a pussy.

Gouda 10-01-2004 08:22 PM

Mark Magnus is such a cool name though... the should have brought him in as The Master of Metallism.

...... Or not.

Hussain - i = Hussan.

Funky Fly 10-01-2004 08:35 PM

He looks more White than Arabic. Also, WWE might catch more backlash than they bargain for, since Herr Layfield was only a few months ago.

I would think that a baby killing character is "all out there". And Chuck and Billy is another example. A Muslim character would create heat, but after things that have already happened, I can't imagine it creating that big of a ripple.

Savio 10-01-2004 08:51 PM

Chuck and Billy got positive heat.

Loose Cannon 10-01-2004 09:49 PM

See, they can't worry about backlash. They need something that grabs the media's attention. And we all know that the media flocks right to anything that is controversial.

Xero 10-01-2004 10:08 PM

The one problem with pushing the wrong buttons extremely right now is that WWE is in negotiations with Spike to renew their contract... If WWE actually LOSES viewers from this, then Spike would most likely drop WWE... But, right now, if WWE does something so out there that they get the media's attention in a BIG way, things will be looking way up...

And since we're talking about Billy and Chuck, it wasnt all postive, because after the angle was done, WWE shat on GLAD and the gay community... That, I would say, was WWE's last BIG publicity stunt, and this muslim one can rival that one...

The CyNick 10-01-2004 10:10 PM

If they dont have a solid show to show to people, getting a bunch of exttra people watching for a week or two wont help anything, in fact it might do more harm than good.

It all depends how the character is handled. Knowing the WWE they will go too far with it, and thye'll get a backlash and may even lose viewers out of it. Also, putting the gimmick aside, if Magnus isn't ready which he probably isn't, then the character will die because the fans will reject him.

If it was me, I'd put the guy on SD. I think there are better stories for him over there. They already have a tag team that wave the flags of past and present enemies of the US, so adding an "Iraqi" talent would be a good fit.

Also, it would be kinda interesting to have either Angle or Bradhsaw (self proclaimed "Great Americans") aligning themselves with the anti-US Iraqi. There would be heat there.

The Mask 10-01-2004 10:13 PM

They need to turn him into a gay muslim. That way the rednecks will really hate him, and the muslims will hate him too. Thus, everyone is happy.

Loose Cannon 10-01-2004 10:35 PM

But look who's also on Raw. A little team called La Resistance. I like them wy better then Dupree and that other jackass. I don't like the new guys going to Smackdown, cause they always seem to flop if there not protected by a superstar of higher status. He's got a manager, which is a good move because now it's 2 on 1. On Raw, I think he can push more buttons and say stuff you can't say on Smackdown. Sackdown is like a G rated Raw IMO.

The Angle alliance could be cool, I somehow see it turning into comedy with Angle.

For starters, I think he'd be better off on his own, being a real bad ass, saying very little, but getting under people's skin. Like after a match where he totaly destroys his opponent, have him make his opponent get down on his knees and kiss some sacred symbol of Islam in fear that he will break his neck.

I would love to see the reaction in the Middle East though

The CyNick 10-01-2004 10:49 PM

Well thats the other thing about the angle, it really exposes the ignorance of Americans in general, but thats a whole other issue.

On RAW as a heel he is limited. HHH wont let any other non-Evo heels get anywhere close to the main event, nevermind the main event, few other heels are allowed on RAW period.

The other problem on RAW is that you have the middle level babyfaces (Benoit/Jericho) are CDN, and its hard to build up the USA-Iraq story with guys from Quebec/Alberta and Manitoba.

At least on SD they have guys like Eddie, Rey and RVD who are actually American.

I'm sure that seeing an American wrestler being forced to kiss a sacred symbol of Islam would go over realllllllllllllll well. :p I'd love to see the American reaction though.

The Naitch 10-01-2004 11:39 PM

Atleast this guy look normal, instead of some Iron Shiek looking fat fuck with a turban. If that profile pic is how he's going to look like in WWE, then it'd work.

I don't get it. What are you saying? That alone won't get hhim over, but little things like that over time might. He just humilaites the American Wrestlers time and time again. And when the Wrestlers don't cooperate, he kicks the shit out of them and makes them do it.

Champion of Europa 10-01-2004 11:53 PM

I posted this topic. :(

It was just more general praise for Magnus than talk about the character.

Oh, don't get me wrong. It would be an interesting character to be sure. But I'm torn between thinking that this would be a bad idea and in poor taste (even by WWE standards) due to the times and thinking that because of the other past stupid shit angles that this would hardly cause a ripple.

Carmella can be his Jasmin :naughty:

what I meant to say was atleast WWE isn't making him look like Tiger Ali Singh or anything close to that. I know East indians and Muslims aren't exactly the same, but still.

Cuz before I clicked the profile pic, i was expecting to see some big hairy muslim dude with a dirt rag for ring attire

So is a Suicide Bomb (powerbomb or variation powerbomb) his finisher? Because there was a double meaning in that one there

I didn't mean it as a double meaning. Just like, "KABOOM." Draw. :(

CosaNostra 10-02-2004 12:48 AM

The Jihad Bomb

Champion of Europa 10-02-2004 12:50 AM

Muhammad Hussan's music hits during a Eugene promo. Hussan yells, "ALL PRAISE TO ALLAH." Eugene ducks for cover.

YOU KNOW YOU WANNA SEE IT.

Loose Cannon 10-02-2004 01:51 AM

LOL "Jihad Bomb."

BigDaddyCool 10-02-2004 02:28 PM

Why not just bring in Sabu? He has already been playing that character for years. Duh.

His catchphrase should be "SWEET ALLAH!!!!"

His t-shirts would sell like hotcakes among American born muslims living in North America :naughty:

You like the current installment of La Resistance (aka Quebecers 2004)?

They're cool (mainly because they're only real tag team out there, besides The Superheroes and The Ex-ECWers), but... I dunno. I kinda liked Dupree and Grenier together. Conway just seems funny to me in that tag team.
